Chapter 5: Caught in a Dream
update icon Updated at 2025/12/10 17:30:58

This happened the day before the Chief Student of Rockefeller Academy crossed into another world...

Lunette Orpheus, one of the academy’s top students, had never imagined her life would change—and never believed in gods.

“What is this…”

The white-haired girl cringed inwardly at the scene before her.

Rockefeller Academy’s massive training arena—built to hold two thousand students—now hosted the Academy Chancellor. The elderly, white-haired man stood before a newly erected ritual platform, leaning on a cane.

“I heard they’re holding some kind of ceremony,” Caina answered Lunette’s unspoken question.

Crowds of curious students had gathered, fascinated by the platform.

“I think it’s… a Hero Summoning Ritual?” Caina added after a pause.

“Has he read too many fairy tales?” Lunette muttered. *How could someone his age still believe in Hero-and-Dark-Lord stories?* She’d loved those tales as a child, but now? They were childish nonsense. And the respected Chancellor actually attempting this ritual—was he out of his mind?

Strangest of all, spectators included heirs of imperial noble families. Even Theos, the academy’s second-ranked student, stood among them. *Ridiculous. There’s no Dark Lord threatening our continent. If he’s worried about threats, he should focus on border conflicts—not fairy tales.*

“Hm?”

Lunette froze as a golden-haired girl passed by. Their eyes met. After a moment, Lunette looked away toward the Chancellor. The blonde said nothing, simply turning toward the ritual platform.

“You’ve come, Princess,” the Chancellor’s weathered voice called out.

“I’m merely a student here, Wensidia,” the blonde replied with a faint smile.

“Then let us begin.”

The Chancellor nodded. This ritual required royal blood—it was far from ordinary.

“Can this truly summon a guest from a distant world?” Wensidia asked.

“Ancient texts claim it’s real. Today, we verify the truth.”

Mana surged through the Chancellor’s body as he chanted. A magic circle flared beneath his feet. Wensidia closed her eyes, gathering energy.

“They’re really summoning a Hero? This just got interesting~” Caina’s eyes sparkled with excitement.

Lunette stayed silent, her gaze fixed on the platform.

The magic circle expanded. Mana poured from the Chancellor, coalescing into a swirling rift in the sky. Golden light erupted from Wensidia, feeding the rift. Multiple magic circles materialized overhead.

“The royal bloodline is activating…” Lunette watched as Wensidia’s power surged, the ritual reaching its peak.

“O distant guest, heed my plea! Lend us your strength to overcome this crisis…”

Wensidia’s chant confirmed it—the Hero Summoning Ritual. More students gathered, drawn by the spectacle.

The Chancellor’s eyes snapped open. A blinding flash erupted from the rift. Students shielded their eyes. Through her fingers, Lunette glimpsed the searing light. A dragon’s roar echoed across the academy—*something was coming*.

*Would this day change everything?* Lunette didn’t know. But she sensed this moment would alter her path forever.

**BOOM!**

A violent explosion shattered the ritual platform. Magic circles disintegrated. The shockwave nearly knocked students off their feet.

When Lunette opened her eyes, only ashes remained where the platform stood.

“Ahhh, my back…” The Chancellor lay covered in soot, miraculously unharmed but utterly humiliated. Wensidia fared no better, her clothes singed and hair wild.

“So it was just a legend after all…” Theos muttered, turning away.

“Looks like it failed,” Caina sighed.

“Yeah.” Lunette exhaled, refusing to spare the Chancellor a glance. She grabbed Caina’s hand. “Let’s go. I’m starving.”

“Beefsteak for lunch today! Let’s eat together~”

“Sure.”

The white-haired girl had no idea she’d cross worlds as a soul the next day. Right now, lunch was all that mattered.

Lunette woke the next morning, rubbing her eyes. Her familiar room. The familiar weight against her chest. Yesterday’s events felt hazy.

“Was it a dream…?” she murmured.

“What’s wrong, Lunette?” Caina approached, concerned.

“I had a dream… I went to another world—the one from childhood stories. I met a girl. No, two girls.” Lunette slid out of bed, forcing a smile as she changed into her uniform. “One was named… Manatsu Mio. Such a cute name.”

“Your dreams can wait,” Caina cut in. “But news of your loss to Theos has spread through the whole academy.”

Lunette froze mid-button. “*I* lost to *him*? When?”

She knew her strength. Since entering Rockefeller Academy, she’d never lost a duel. That’s how she became Chief Student.

“Yesterday! In the training arena. I was there—I even treated your wounds afterward.”

“Wait. I remember going with you to watch the Chancellor’s ritual.”

“You’re confused. That was *the day before* yesterday.”

“Huh?!” Lunette scrambled for the calendar. Cold sweat beaded on her neck.

*Why don’t I remember yesterday…?*

No—yesterday’s memories were in the dream. She’d eaten with a girl named Yuki Shiki, then fallen asleep on the ground without showering. Then… she woke up.

*What if it wasn’t a dream?*

Panic seized her. She yanked on her shoes and bolted out the door.

“Lunette, wait!” Caina cried after her.

Outside the dorm, students immediately surrounded her.

“Orpheus, did you really lose to Theos?”

“Is it true, Lunette?”

“You didn’t hold back, did you?”

*No way… I actually fought that loudmouth… and lost?*

She had zero memory of it. A chilling thought struck her:

*Did that Manatsu Mio girl… take over my body?*

The Chief Student’s face drained of color.

——————

*Ding-ding-ding!*

Moyu slapped off her alarm, blinking at her tidy room with a sigh.

“I had a weird dream…”

She’d dreamed of another world—and getting beaten badly by a boy.

“Huh? Since when is my room this clean?” Garbage bags and snack wrappers had vanished.

*Ding-dong!*

The doorbell rang. Moyu opened it to find Yuki Shiki marching straight in.

“I’m dragging you to school before you waste another day gaming.”

Moyu flinched under Yuki’s glare.

“Uh…?”

“Brat!”

“Yes, ma’am!” Moyu snapped upright, holding her breath.

“You *will* attend class today. Understood?”

“Y-yes, ma’am…”

*Why’s she so scary today? I didn’t even do anything!*

After showering and changing, Moyu let Yuki blow-dry her hair.

“But I *did* go to school yesterday,” Moyu mumbled around a mouthful of toast. “Why the big fuss?”

“You stayed home gaming all day! Your homeroom teacher grilled me about it. I barely covered for you before they called your parents.” Yuki’s deadpan stare pinned her in place.

*Did that happen?* Moyu drew a blank. She *had* skipped class to game half a month ago—but Yuki, as class rep, had dragged her to school so fiercely she’d never dared skip again.

“I don’t remember…”

“Don’t treat me like an idiot. Want me to confiscate your console?”

Moyu shut up fast. But she truly didn’t recall yesterday.

She only remembered training with Yuki, exorcising minor youkai…

*Wait.*

Moyu dropped her bacon sandwich. She flipped open the calendar. Her face went pale.

*Why is my memory missing a whole day?!*

No, no...

Yesterday, in my hazy memories, it was the magic academy, the silver-haired girl Lunorette, and the noble lady Caina...

"Moyu, what’s wrong?"

Seeing Moyu’s deathly pale face, Yuki couldn’t help but feel a little worried.

"I..."

It seemed her body had been taken over by someone from another world named Lunorette.

No—rather, she’d swapped bodies with a girl from another world.

And so, her fate began to turn.
