Chapter 5: Trial Lecture (4)
update icon Updated at 2023/6/23 8:10:12

About twenty minutes later, Xu Zhonghao came downstairs and opened the door to go outside. It seemed that Xu Yanran would be arriving soon. LingFan was right in his guess, and within a minute, a girl's voice came from the doorway.

"I've told you I don't want tutoring or a private teacher! Dad, don't you know that? Even if I'm ranked last, I don't want to take any extra classes!" A soft female voice came through. Although it wasn't loud, LingFan could hear it clearly due to the surrounding quietness.

"This is the last time, if you're not satisfied this time, we won't look for one anymore," Xu Zhonghao's helpless voice followed.

"Hehe, this is what you said, you can't go back on it."

"I won't go back on it, I won't."

Upon hearing this, LingFan felt that this little girl was different from Su Moran and might be difficult to deal with. However, he decided to just let things take their course and do his best. If it didn't work out, it would just mean that it wasn't meant to be, and he wouldn't earn the money.

The sound of the door opening interrupted LingFan's thoughts. Looking towards the entrance, he saw a long-haired, beautifully-faced girl with a pair of bright and big eyes looking directly at him on the sofa. She had a different vibe than the girl-next-door, Su Moran.

LingFan thought that when Xu Yanran was quiet, she seemed like a delicate flower reflected in the water, and her character seemed quite assertive. The phrase "in motion like a weak willow in the wind" described Su Moran, but it definitely didn't apply to Xu Yanran, at least that's what LingFan thought.

With her long black hair, LingFan believed that Xu Yanran's school must have a more relaxed dress code compared to the Moral Education School, which had stricter requirements. However, the students at the Moral Education School were generally more disciplined.

Well, this might be a bit difficult. Many thoughts crossed LingFan's mind in an instant, but his thinking remained unobstructed. The intelligence level of 22 on the data panel wasn't a joke after all.

"Hello Xu Yanran, nice to meet you. I'm LingFan, and I'll be the teacher for your trial class today," LingFan greeted first.

"LingFan? You're the teacher for my class? You look like you're also in middle school. How can you teach me?" Xu Yanran was mildly surprised, as she didn't expect the tutor to be a boy around her age. All her previous tutors arranged by her parents were much older and female.

"Yes, I'm attending Moral Education Middle School, in the second year of middle school."

"Moral Education... So your academic performance must be pretty good, right?" Xu Yanran suddenly became interested, as the person in front of her seemed different from others.

"Just so-so. I'm in the key class," LingFan decided to show off a bit of his ability to pique Xu Yanran's interest.

"Really? I've never met a student from a key class before. My dad wanted me to attend Moral Education Middle School, but I didn't get in because of my poor grades. Isn't that right, dad?" Xu Yanran turned to glance at her father.

"Cough, that was the situation then, and I didn't lie to you. I tried many ways, but their school has a rigid requirement on grades," Xu Zhonghao replied helplessly, shaking his head.

"Wow, you're impressive, LingFan," Xu Yanran looked at LingFan with a bit more interest. However, it was just a bit.

LingFan's outfit was plain, and she didn't even recognize the brand of his phone, guessing it to be some low-quality imitation. It seemed like LingFan was not from a well-off family. However, she had heard that the key class students of Moral Education were all very capable. Might as well let him try teaching, and if she wasn't interested, she could simply refuse. She wouldn't lose anything, and it could even become an interesting story to share with her friends later.

Xu Zhonghao wasn't foolish and immediately sensed that something was off. His daughter seemed somewhat interested, so this trial lesson was worth a shot.At this moment, LingFan took out his phone and checked it.

"I can't say that I'm amazing, but you can do just as well if you try hard. If there's no problem, I'll give you a trial lesson first, so we won't waste each other's time. Uncle Xu, what do you think?" LingFan didn't want to waste any more time. This arrangement was meant to be reciprocal. Even if he didn't have anything to do in the afternoon, it would be nice to go home early and play some games, right?

"Then go ahead and start. Yanran, go get your textbook." Xu Zhonghao's thoughts were quite similar to LingFan's.

"Hmph, I'll see what you're really capable of," Xu Yanran said before going upstairs to fetch her textbook.

"LingFan, Yanran's personality is just like this. Maybe her mother and I spoiled her a bit too much, don't feel any burden on you."

"No problem, her personality is still pretty good. If you want to listen to the lesson, just sit nearby." LingFan flipped through the junior high school textbooks in his backpack and estimated Xu Yanran's progress. He took out his notebook and planned to give it to Xu Yanran if the trial lesson went well.

"I'm completely clueless about this subject. I'll not disturb you, I'll just take a walk outside," Xu Zhonghao said before leaving the villa. This was his own home, and he wasn't worried about LingFan, a young boy, doing anything out of line.

Plus, LingFan didn't seem too interested in Xu Yanran, unlike some people before.

Xu Zhonghao believed that his judgment of people was generally accurate.

Soon, Xu Yanran returned to the living room.

LingFan glanced at her and then shifted his gaze back to the book.

After asking her a few questions, LingFan found that Xu Yanran's foundation was indeed weak. He proceeded to quiz her on all the topics covered in the first year of junior high.

It was a bit difficult – Xu Yanran was not just a little underperforming, she was basically a terrible student.

LingFan felt a headache coming on, but he didn't criticize her. Who knew if she was the sensitive type?

He quickly came up with a core plan for Xu Yanran's trial lesson: start from the very basics.

At first, Xu Yanran didn't take it seriously. She knew very well how poor her own abilities were. Previous teachers had given up on her, and she didn't have high hopes for LingFan.

Soon, however, she discovered that LingFan's teaching methods were different from those of previous tutors and schoolteachers. Under his guidance, she felt that she was not as bad as she thought.

LingFan seemed unaffected by her charm.

Xu Yanran had a rather precocious personality, and she was well aware of some things. The way LingFan looked at her was different from how the boys in her class did.

Just as she was daydreaming, LingFan tapped her lightly on the head with the textbook, interrupting her reverie.

"Why did you hit me?" Xu Yanran asked, holding her head.

"Because you were spacing out. Focus."

"Sorry!" Xu Yanran playfully stuck her tongue out, but LingFan didn't seem to notice.

"Did I get uglier?" she thought suddenly.

The forty-five minute trial class quickly passed, and Xu Yanran had to admit that LingFan's teaching skills were excellent, and he even looked a bit handsome when focused.

As she stared at LingFan, he closed the textbook and stood up.

"Uncle Xu, stop eavesdropping and come in," LingFan said, noticing that Xu Zhonghao had been waiting at the door for over ten minutes.

"Cough, cough... " Xu Zhonghao walked in with an embarrassed expression.

"Yanran, what do you think of this teacher?""Teacher Ling has a good temperament and personality, and teaches better than the teachers at school." Xu Yanran glanced and answered with a smile.

Huh? What drama is this? Ling Fan was ready to pack up and leave, as he had taught this class very seriously and with great effort. However, Xu Yanran had many tricks up her sleeve, often teasing him. Having lived two lives, he was not interested in this young girl, but he also deeply felt that this sister was not an ordinary person, much harder to teach than Su Moran.

"Puff..." Xu Zhonghao just picked up a cup of tea to take a small sip and almost spat it out.

"Yanran, what did you just say?" Xu Zhonghao felt like he had misheard.

"I said, Ling Fan is a great teacher, and I think he is perfect for me." Xu Yanran repeated, her face flushed.

"Alright, Yanran, you go out for a while. I have something to discuss with Ling Fan." This kind of money issue should be discussed without the child present.

"No, I'll stay here." Xu Yanran pouted.

"Be good, Yanran. If you delay Ling Fan's time, he still has to go back."

"Yes, it's getting late and I won't be able to catch the bus back home. Please, beautiful Xu, show some mercy." Ling Fan clasped his hands together and said to Xu Yanran.

"Alright, I'll go out and play with Yen." Xu Yanran left with a smile when she saw Ling Fan say this.

After watching his daughter leave, Xu Zhonghao sat across from Ling Fan.

"To be honest, I underestimated you before, Ling Fan. You are the highest-rated teacher among my daughter's teachers." Xu Zhonghao looked up and down at Ling Fan again. Xu Yanran's answer was tantamount to agreeing to future tutoring lessons, something he hadn't even thought about today.

"Uncle Xu, you flatter me. Maybe my teaching methods just happen to suit Xu Yanran well." Ling Fan replied noncommittally.

"Uncle Xu is a straightforward person. Just say your tutoring hours and salary." Ling Fan solved a very troublesome problem for Xu Zhonghao, and his mood was very good at the moment.

After hearing this, Ling Fan rubbed his nose and began to think.

From the initial trial class, teaching Xu Yanran would definitely be more laborious than teaching Su Moran, so the price would have to be higher and the time could be set in the afternoon.

"500 per lesson, each lesson is 45 minutes, starting at 2 pm on Saturday afternoons, and about three lessons per afternoon. If you agree, this lesson will also count towards the total lesson time." Ling Fan thought for a moment and gave his answer.

Seeing Xu Zhonghao not speaking for a moment, Ling Fan thought he might have set the price too high, but he had his reasons.

"I have a general understanding of Xu Yanran's situation. Her foundation is very poor, and I don't mean to be blunt, but her grades are definitely not just "a little bad" as you said, and her academic performance in all subjects is not good. It will be very difficult for me to teach her."

Ling Fan finished speaking, picked up the tea on the table, and took a sip.

"If you think the price is too high, then I'm just too young and presumptuous. Just consider this lesson as a gift from me, and I'll leave first." Ling Fan stood up, took his backpack, and prepared to leave.

"Ling Fan, you misunderstood. 500 per lesson is not expensive at all. To tell you the truth, the tea you're drinking isn't even worth less than 500. I was just thinking about Yanran's schedule. She originally had something planned for Saturday afternoon. Can you do Saturday mornings instead?" Xu Zhonghao didn't expect that his thoughts on other things would almost cause Ling Fan to misunderstand.

"I'm afraid that won't work, as I have classes at Junhao Garden on Saturday mornings." Ling Fan sat back down and took another sip of tea.

Damn, 500 per cup of tea, even if there's no taste, you have to drink it.

"Alright, let's go with your suggested schedule."

"Thank you, Uncle Xu."

"No problem, I'll prepay you for twelve lessons." Xu Zhonghao quickly called a servant to bring an envelope and handed it to Ling Fan.LingFan did not hesitate and directly accepted the money, putting it into his own backpack. "Uncle Xu, this is my notebook for my first year of high school math and geography. Please give it to Xu Yanran when she returns. This can be considered my gift to her when we meet." LingFan took out his notebook and placed it on the tea table.

"Thank you on behalf of Yanran, then. It's already late, so why don't you stay for dinner before leaving?"

"Uncle Xu, I appreciate your kindness, but I have some other things to do tonight, so I won't bother you." LingFan naturally understood that this was a polite remark.

"Let me arrange for a car to take you home. It's not very safe for you to go back like this." This time, Xu Zhonghao was not being polite, as LingFan was carrying a considerable amount of cash with him.

LingFan was about to agree, but suddenly recalled the look on Xu Yanran's face when she left; it sent a chill down his spine. "Don't worry, I will be careful."

"Also, please don't tell Xu Yanran about the tuition I conducted in Junhao Garden this morning." LingFan added after having a thought.

"Rest assured, I won't say anything." After receiving Xu Zhonghao's reply, LingFan left the small courtyard.

Taking great care, LingFan decided not to take the bus. He walked to the roadside and hailed a taxi, getting in and leaving immediately.

Just after LingFan got into the car, Xu Yanran, wearing a duckbill cap, emerged from a corner. "He said he would take the bus, but changed to a taxi. Men are all liars, liars! I'll follow him again next time." An annoyed Xu Yanran muttered to herself and then left.

Unaware of this, LingFan was considering where to go for a big meal that night and how to make a lesson plan for the two girls. After all, he had taken their money, so he would have to do a good job in return.
