Chapter 55: Blame it on me

Perspective: Fir

Although I don't know if the wanted criminal in the photo really looks like that, I roughly modified my appearance according to the photo, picked up a nice-looking weapon, put on a cool tattered coat, and swaggered into the harbor towards a ship with military flags not far away.

It seems like this guy hasn't shown up in a long time. At first, a few soldiers glanced at me but completely ignored me.

Could it be that the wanted poster has been up for too long, and no one recognizes this guy anymore? Can't you at least pay a bit of attention to someone wanted on a poster? No wonder your law and order is so poor, it's all because of you incompetent folks!

I could only continue playing this role. After all, I can't just cheerfully shout at them, "Come arrest me!" That would be too fake, and completely pointless.

Looking at those lazy soldiers, I was speechless. Can't you show some reaction at least? Otherwise, what's the point of disguising myself?

But, even as I walked past their ranks, the soldiers still didn't react. I could only feel helpless and resigned about it.

Alright, you win. It seems like unless there's a big commotion, you guys don't intend to make a move, right?

With that thought, I quickened my pace towards the naval battleship at the farthest and deepest part of the harbor.

Heh heh, since you guys aren't reacting, I'll make you react dramatically.

"Huh? Stop right there!"

Finally, as I was nearing the warship, the guards standing next to it finally reacted, raising their weapons and approaching me.

But the soldiers behind them remained unresponsive, with only a few looking in our direction.

"Stop? Why?"

I smiled at the guards and slowly spoke.

"Uh... this is the naval port, and unauthorized individuals..."

Before he could finish, I had already completed the incantation for an acceleration spell. An acceleration dart shot through the middle of the two guards, and at the same time, two tripwires slung around their feet.

Using magic would be more convenient, but until I know what occupation this wanted criminal is, it's better not to use magic indiscriminately.

"Hey! Wait, you stop... Ouch!"

Just as the two turned to grab me, they were tripped and fell to the ground.

Honestly, their reaction time is really slow.

Since you want a reaction, I'll give you a big one.

At that moment, the soldiers preparing on the ship heard the commotion and looked over, seeing me charging towards the ship, with two soldiers struggling to free themselves from the tripwires on the ground behind me. Even an idiot could figure out what had just happened, right?

And the troops waiting nearby finally started moving, all charging straight towards me.

Well, I'm not good at swordsmanship, and I can't use magic casually... If only I had let that guy, Aliyah, come; but he doesn't know Transfiguration...

Forget it, for now, I just need to divert these people.

Thinking like this, I tossed a sticky bomb near the waterline of the neighboring warship and made a turn towards the direction of the city.

Though I'm not good at close combat, I excel at running away!

After a couple of flips onto the roof next to the harbor, I turned around, bowed to the soldiers still climbing up, and detonated the bomb.

Some of the soldiers who had rushed over planned to see what I had thrown before they got close, but were knocked back by the blast wave. Although the improved bomb could now be directionally detonated, most of the bombs I carried did not have directional explosion because why would I need direction when causing destruction? I'm not Batman.

"Quick, catch him! He's the wanted criminal!"

Not sure who suddenly shouted, the soldiers also became excited, scrambling to climb up. Those who couldn't climb up directly started to detour around to surround me from behind.

Honestly, don't they know my agility is quite high?

I chuckled and headed directly towards the city as I ran along the rooftops.

My goal is just to distract these guys. In a straight-up fight where I can't use magic, I'm at a severe disadvantage.

Though even using magic is quite difficult right now.

But while running, I also connected the communication on my earpiece.

"Hey, did you guys finish off those soldiers chasing us?"

"You took too long upfront, we already took care of the mercenaries on the ship and threw them into the sea."

Aliyah quickly responded.

"...You could have told me earlier! Why go through all this trouble then?"

I smiled wryly, then flipped off a balcony into a restaurant on the second floor and went in.

"You should have moved faster. We did our part, and you're the one stalling."

Are you all too hasty? Have you played too many assassin games? Killing off those mercenaries in a snap, are you sure you're assassins, not untouchables?

But since it's done, that's all that matters.

"Alright, you guys wait on the ship for Uncle Mont and the others. I'll change clothes, get rid of any pursuers, and be back."

"Alright."

After ending the call, I crossed the empty restaurant on the second floor and changed my clothes in the restroom.

Of course, until I'm completely sure I've shaken off the pursuers, I won't change back to my original appearance. Instead, I took on the appearance of one of the mercenaries I had seen in the Cold Wind Mercenary Group.

As I stepped out of the restroom, the street outside was already bustling with noise, with chaos and commotion everywhere.

It seems that sinking that warship had quite a remarkable effect. Have they all gone haywire on the other side?

Descending, I saw a group of soldiers and mercenaries arguing fiercely at the restaurant's entrance. It seems like the mercenaries were eating, and the soldiers who came to search disturbed them, leading to the altercation.

"That bastard disappeared from around here! Search the area!"

Shouted a squad leader-like figure.

"What are you all doing? Can't you see we're still drinking? Do you not know what time it is? Why are you searching?"

"Hmph! Someone bombed a battleship at the harbor, and a fugitive has nearby escaped. It's only natural we search!"

"Haha! Look at you now. You can't properly manage the city's security, and now you're in a rush, huh?"

"You..."

Hearing the mercenary's words, the squad leader's face paled, and he gestured.

"These mercenaries are suspected of harboring a fugitive! Arrest them all!"

"Alright! Let's settle this with force!"

Hold on, are you guys too hot-headed to just start a fight like this...

Seeing them, I patted my forehead, then turned and headed towards the kitchen's backdoor.

I don't want to waste any more time here. I should hurry and leave.

"I was saying..."

Just as I stepped out, Aliyah's voice came through.

"What's wrong?"

"You're too ruthless. The enemy's battleship couldn't be saved in time and sank directly."

"Blame it on me?"
