Chapter 1: The Worst Possible Start!

Zhuohua stared at the crystal screen floating before her, looking completely dazed.

On the screen was a stunning woman.

The woman was tall and curvy. Her simple black outfit only served to accentuate her figure, and the roundness of her breasts made you want to tear her clothes right off.

Unfortunately, a black veil hanging from her head obscured her face. Only her waist-length white hair and a hint of rose-pink lips were visible.

But the woman wasn't what had left Zhuohua dazed. It was the words floating in front of her:

“No 998, no 198! Just let the Mother Goddess see your cute little panties, and you'll get 1,998 points plus a sweet, gentle wife!”

Zhuohua: ???

Th-this is perverted!

Her face was twisted in horror, but she was so tempted.

Why? Because she really needed help right now. More than that, she needed money.

Zhuohua was a corporate drone. A truck had hit her on the road, and then she'd woken up in this body.

Here's the problem: Other people's transmigrations started with wealth, status, or at least a modestly comfortable home. Failing that, they were still healthy. But her own transmigration had gone straight to Hell difficulty.

Zhuohua glanced around. She was in a run-down room, the kind you saw all the time in the slums.

Why call it a slum? Because the place was as bad as it could possibly get. Calling it an apartment was generous; it was more like a rundown building that could barely pass as habitable.

What she lived in couldn't even be called a room. It was just a tiny basement. There was no bedroom, only a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. It was pitch-dark, and she had to turn on the lights just to see.

The living room had only one battered old sofa. Its fabric had split open, exposing the yellow foam padding inside. Dust covered the floor, and cobwebs filled the corners of the ceiling.

That was everything in the living room.

At least the kitchen had a stove and a fridge, and the bathroom had a shower she could use.

The most dangerous part was outside this slum apartment.

It was a real “peaceful, wholesome” neighborhood. Homeless people were everywhere, and a few thugs at every street corner watched passersby with ill intent. She even saw people with rotting skin and blackened teeth, staggering along like zombies in the throes of severe drug addiction.

Of course, Zhuohua didn't care much about any of that. Back when she'd been kicked out of her home, she'd learned every trick in the book.

She'd slept at bus stops, used newspapers as blankets under bridges, warmed herself in hospitals, and snuck onto a university campus to scavenge. She'd somehow survived an entire year, finally made it to adulthood, and become a convenience store clerk at Hua○ Star.

She might be helpless in the wilderness, but when it came to surviving in the concrete jungle, she was practically a master!

At least this start didn't have her sleeping rough.

But if those were her only problems, Zhuohua wouldn't have been desperate enough to try selling herself... Though, to be fair, even if she tried, nobody would buy.

She walked into the bathroom and saw her face in the broken mirror.

What a horrifying face!

Huge patches of skin had been burned away, leaving dark red scars behind. The skin on her right cheek had completely peeled off, revealing tiny, uneven red pits. Her ravaged face looked a lot like that of a certain villain from A Nightmare on Elm Street.

This wasn't just ugly.

It was terrifying!

She could get scared just looking in the mirror. One morning, she might wake up, see herself, and die of fright.

She'd only managed to figure out that the original owner was an Asian woman by looking at her skin.

The one bit of good news was that the nerve damage in her face had left her completely unable to feel pain there.

Even if a chainsaw hit her in the face, she probably wouldn't feel much as long as the wounds weren't too deep.

Think this is as bad as it gets? No.

Zhuohua had been in this body for two days. She'd been living off the food in the fridge and wracking her brain to recall her pitifully limited vocabulary, just so she could manage a basic conversation with the outside world.

Then she found out this body was in debt.

It was a loan-shark debt so huge that even selling herself wouldn't come close to paying it off. The creditor was the biggest gang in the entire city.

How did Zhuohua find out? The gang's thugs had just shown up at her door and beaten her. They'd babbled at her, tossed down a debt notice, then kicked her a few more times before leaving, cursing her face in disgust.

In a way, being disfigured might actually have been lucky,

because the original owner's figure was incredible.

Fair skin, curves in all the right places, a slender waist, arms as pale as snow, and a pair of long, straight, shapely legs you could spend ten years worshipping.

The only thing this body lacked compared to the models on the Victoria's Secret runway was height.

If she hadn't been disfigured, she would've been a rare beauty.

What a shame. This beautiful woman was going to die today.

Zhuohua thought as she went to the kitchen and turned on the gas. Then she planned to lie back down and have a nice, long sleep.

If living was so painful, couldn't she at least die peacefully?

But just as she lay down on the bed, something glowing pink suddenly smashed through her bedroom window and hit her on the head without a word.

“Intelligent life-form identified. Zhuohua, from Earth, welcome to the ‘I Love My Wife’ System.”

“You have only one task. It doesn't matter whether they're male or female, whether they're human or not, or how awful their personality is.

All you have to do is say: ‘Hi, wifey!’”

Zhuohua stared blankly at the transparent, hot-pink crystal screen before her. Her expression slowly changed from “( ゚∀。)” to “\( ゚∀。)/”.

She had no idea why, but she had a system now. At least she wouldn't have to die again.

She hurried back to the kitchen with the screen hovering in front of her, turned off the gas, and opened a window to air the place out. Only then did she take a closer look at the crystal screen and tentatively ask, “Wh-who are you?”

No answer.

After waiting a while, Zhuohua realized this wasn't the familiar nanny-like system from Shuke. It was more like one of Qidian's systems.

Qidian systems were usually pretty aloof.

This system also had a strong video-game vibe. Four tabs hovered before her: Attributes, Scan, Shop, and Draw.

Which one should she look at first?

Only kids make choices.

Like the protagonist of every system novel under the sun, Zhuohua focused on the “Attributes” tab.

Just as expected, the screen changed.

“Name: Zhuohua

Appearance: 2 (Any lower and you'd really look like an Old One.)

Willpower: 6 (A little more resolute than the average person, able to withstand a little more pressure... but only a little.)

Constitution: 4 (Get caught in a heavy rain, and you'll definitely catch a cold.)

Strength: 3 (Feeble. You're an adult, but you still have the strength of a middle schooler.)

Agility: 4 (Takes six minutes to run 800 meters, even when giving it everything you've got.)

Equipment: None

Items: None

Skills: None”

“That's rough.” Zhuohua couldn't help laughing at the stats displayed on the pink crystal screen. “Almost as rough as my face.”

She turned her attention to the Shop tab, and her expression grew strange.

“What is this?”
