048. Twisted Ankle

Ren Chi’s new place was a two-bedroom, one-living-room apartment. The complex was only about a hundred meters from the school. Apparently, a lot of students and young teachers rented here.

Panting hard, An Han dragged his suitcase to Ren Chi’s door.

He looked over the old residential building. It was probably quite a bit older than he was. The whole building only had seven floors, with no elevator. The stairwell was plastered with graffiti-like ads, but the floor was still fairly clean and tidy.

“Coming in? It’s a little messy inside.” Ren Chi opened the door and looked back at the breathless An Han. “Seven floors is a bit much. Come in and have some water first?”

“No need.” An Han lifted the suitcase over the threshold with both hands, then stepped back two paces himself.

He still called himself a man, sure, but he was also very aware of the changes in his body.

The dorms were one thing. There were people in basically every room around you, and the soundproofing sucked. But in a residential building? Who knew what might happen between two lone men. Even if he screamed his lungs out, nobody might hear him.

But Ren Chi’s favorability toward me... forty-eight.

An Han checked the system interface and fell into thought.

That favorability was definitely still in the safe zone. Still, he hadn’t expected that after only a few interactions, Ren Chi’s score would already be pushing fifty.

You had to know, even after more than two years together, Chen Junjie’s favorability toward him had never been this high. Which clearly proved one thing—

Chen Junjie was trash!

“Coming in to get your cola?”

“Coming!”

Figuring there was no way Ren Chi’s favorability had reached the level of actual liking, An Han instantly relaxed and trotted into the apartment.

The place wasn’t that big. Two bedrooms and a living room, with very simple decor. Altogether, it was probably only a bit over sixty square meters. The rent was cheap too. But considering it was the top floor of an old complex with no elevator, plus the fact that it was out in the suburbs, the price wasn’t that surprising.

An Han looked around the apartment, took the cola Ren Chi handed him, and asked, “Teacher, won’t climbing seven floors every day feel awful?”

“You get used to it after a while. Mostly, I just can’t afford a place with an elevator.” Ren Chi opened a bottle of cola for himself too, chugged down half of it, wiped the corner of his mouth with the back of his hand, then dropped onto the sofa with a satisfied sigh.

“There’s not even AC in the living room...”

“Use the fan. Or go to the bedroom and turn on the AC.”

“I’ll pass on the bedroom...” An Han could still feel at ease in the living room. In the bedroom, there was no way he’d be able to relax.

He pulled over a stool and sat down, rubbing his sore calves. With nothing better to do, he asked, “Teacher, with a two-bedroom place like this, are you planning to live with your girlfriend?”

“No. I’m planning to get a cat. The other room will be the cat room.”

An Han’s face was full of envy. Right now, his biggest wish was to have a living setup like Ren Chi’s after graduation, and to be able to keep a cat too.

Too bad that after he graduated, he’d most likely end up renting some cramped little room barely over ten square meters and working 996 every day.

The system was useless, seriously. He’d thought he’d hit financial freedom before long.

He let out a long sigh. Once he’d rested enough, he stood up and said, “Let’s go. I’ll keep helping you move.”

“Why are you more anxious than I am?” Ren Chi leaned back on the sofa and looked at An Han’s back, hesitating as his lips parted.

But before he could say the words he’d been holding in for so long, An Han cut him off.

“Hurry up and finish your stuff already. I’m going back to the dorm to enjoy the AC.”

“And my legs hurt so bad. Let’s wrap this up already. I need to rest~”

He wailed dramatically. His calves were still trembling slightly, and the muscles were so sore he was almost having trouble walking.

He really shouldn’t have gone running with Su Peng last night. And then today he had to help Ren Chi move too, in a seven-floor building with no damn elevator!

“Aren’t you resting right now?”

“This little bit of time isn’t even close to enough, okay?!”

“Then stay here and rest. I’ll handle it myself.” Ren Chi turned the little fan on the coffee table toward An Han. “Don’t run around. I’ll treat you to dinner later.”

“I’d rather go back to the dorm.” An Han muttered as he headed straight for the door. “I can’t stand being outside for long in this heat.”

His back was already soaked through with sweat. The hair at his temples and bangs hung damply against his skin too.

“Then why are you wearing a jacket in this weather?”

It’s not like I want to wear a jacket! I want to use a chest binder!

But the one I bought online doesn’t work! And the binder the system gave me has way too many side effects! What else am I supposed to do?!

An Han grumbled inwardly. Without turning around, he waved a hand at Ren Chi. “I’m heading out! You should be able to finish moving the rest of the boxes in another trip or two.”

“Alright. Be careful on the way back.”

He casually helped pull the door shut, grabbed the handrail, frowned, and slowly made his way down the stairs.

I seriously overdid it.

Need to get back to the dorm fast, turn on the AC, lie on my bed, and play on my phone.

With that thought, An Han’s pace unconsciously quickened.

But after only going down two floors, his calf suddenly gave out. His center of gravity tipped forward, and with a thump, he fell and landed hard on the stairs.

“Hiss—”

I twisted my ankle!

He tried to grab the stair rail beside him and stand up, but that injured foot couldn’t take any force at all. The moment he put weight on it, sharp pain stabbed straight into his tear ducts.

An Han held it in, but his little face still went deathly pale from the pain, and he had no choice but to sit back down.

That was close. I almost rolled all the way down the stairs. If that happened, I’d be lucky not to die or end up half-crippled.

[Option 1: Wait here for help from a passerby. Reward: a huge inheritance

Option 2: Walk back by yourself. Reward: guaranteed exam-passing trait

Option 3: Contact Ren Chi and get his help. Reward: random attribute point]

Sitting on the step, An Han looked up at the system mission screen in front of him. He couldn’t hold back and threw a punch at it.

“The hell? Are you making fun of me for falling over while walking?!”

His fist swung through empty air. The mission interface wasn’t affected in the slightest and still hung there in midair.

Once that bit of anger settled down, An Han helplessly started reading the mission more carefully.

This was the first mission after the system upgrade. The rewards didn’t look much different from before.

First, the mission target... obviously, getting Ren Chi’s help was the easiest option, and also the one An Han personally wanted most. But that random attribute point made him hesitate.

Still, An Han could barely even get up off the ground right now. Walking back by himself was basically wishful thinking. And if the ankle sprain turned out to be especially bad, then by the time he made it back to school, his foot might be completely wrecked.

“Maybe I should wait for a passerby?” An Han looked left and right, then tilted his head to listen, but he didn’t hear any voices or footsteps nearby.

Besides, this was the hardest mission. Any passerby he ran into probably wouldn’t be a good person.

After dealing with the system for nearly two weeks, An Han had more or less figured out its nasty habits by now.

“Guess I’ll go with option three...”

[Mission Three selected. Please complete it as soon as possible.]

An Han let out a mournful sigh. He had no idea what attribute it would increase this time.

Figure, looks, charm... what else was even left?
