“Don’t listen to their nonsense,” Bai Ningning said to the sales clerk. “I’m still a student, so try to pick a style that fits my status.”
Pride, rank, whatever that was supposed to mean... it kind of scared her.
“A girlish style, huh? But...” The clerk’s gaze swept over her with a complicated look. “You really are a student? How old are you... I mean your age.”
“Eighteen.” Bai Ningning answered calmly.
Good thing Qin Yue told her the correct answer yesterday. Otherwise, she’d have said twenty-four, and a student.
The clerk was speechless for a moment. “Your generation... really gets good nutrition.”
“It’s alright, I guess.”
With a mix of speechlessness, envy, and even a little jealousy, the clerk finally got back to doing her job. She sized Bai Ningning up with her eyes first, then led her straight to the back rows of shelves.
“For the larger sizes, the usual target customers are mature women. So the styles are also a bit... mature. There are a few girlish styles, but only a few.”
“Then pick me a few pure and innocent ones,” Bai Ningning said.
The clerk smiled. “Little sis, with your size, no style is going to look pure and innocent.”
Ah. Then switch it to—
“A cute style?”
“No problem. Girlish styles usually come with a bit of cute anyway.”
The clerk took something out of a box nearby. “May I ask how big you are?”
“Eighteen.”
“Sorry, this time I meant your bust.”
So that thing in her hand was a measuring tape.
Bai Ningning had been reborn into this body, so of course she didn’t know the numbers. She could only measure herself on the spot.
During the astonishing measuring process, the clerk couldn’t help asking again, “You’re really only eighteen?”
“Yes. What about it?” Bai Ningning looked calm and innocent.
“Nothing. I just want to remind you,” the clerk said resentfully, “eat less papaya, drink less milk. Otherwise, when you buy clothes, you won’t be able to get the style you want.”
Bai Ningning looked even more innocent. “But I’ve never eaten that, and I rarely drink milk.”
The clerk held it in for a long while, then forced out another line. “Then do fewer shaping exercises. Like chest-expanding exercises.”
Bai Ningning fell silent for a moment. “Does stretching count?”
“...”
Based on her current-version measurements, she picked four styles that looked pretty cute and packed them into a shopping bag. The younger girls hurried over to pay on the other side.
After they walked out of the clothing store, Lanlan said in confusion, “So weird. She sold four pieces, but the clerk didn’t seem happy at all.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Xiaoyi chimed in. “She didn’t even see us off, and she didn’t say thank you for shopping with us.”
Ajin looked at Bai Ningning. “Did something happen to Senior Bai in there... Just a guess. I might be wrong.”
“Obviously wrong,” Bai Ningning said with perfect composure. “Maybe she was just in a bad mood.”
Honestly, I answered whatever she asked the whole way through. I was polite and well-behaved, and I kept my attitude so humble. It definitely wasn’t my problem.
If it wasn’t my problem, then it could only be that she was in a bad mood.
After they finished strolling through the shopping street, they grabbed some local snacks by the roadside. By then, it was about time.
“We’re running out of time too,” Lanlan’s face suddenly dimmed. “In two more days, we’ll have to...”
“Military training,” Qin Xin finished for her.
The mood instantly turned heavy. Especially little-loli Xiaoyi. Her tiny mouth pouted pitifully, like she’d just taken a punch.
Bai Ningning, the only one there who didn’t have to do military training, patted each junior lightly on the shoulder.
“Don’t worry. You won’t die. At worst, you’ll only be half-dead.”
That was her personal experience from four years ago.
The subway arrived. Bai Ningning stepped on with an easy, light rhythm and found a seat. The four juniors stood by the door, their expressions complicated.
“I think I know why the clerk was in a bad mood.”
“Me too.”
“Just a guess, but it’s probably right.”
“...”
After getting off the subway, everyone carried their own shopping bags back to the dorms. Bai Ningning also went back to Qin Yue’s place.
She was in a great mood. She swayed as she walked and even hummed softly to herself.
She’d helped her juniors all day, pointed a few lost girls in the right direction, and when they were scared of military training, she’d even offered warm comfort.
What a harmonious day.
Qin Yue had just finished showering and changed into a bathrobe when she returned to the bedroom and found Bai Ningning back too. The girl had kicked off her shoes and was lying by the bed in bubble socks, happily swinging her feet.
When Qin Yue got closer, she could even hear the humming.
“I’ve got courage, I’m not afraid, no matter winter or summer~”
“What happened?” Qin Yue asked curiously. “Why are you so happy?”
Bai Ningning was still riding the high. The moment someone asked, she blurted out, “What’s it to you?”
Big sis’s gaze darkened, and she reached for the collar of her bathrobe.
“It’s nothing that special,” Bai Ningning said at once. “I just took a few juniors shopping.”
Qin Yue raised a brow. “A few?”
“Four.”
“I was emphasizing that word. I wasn’t literally asking for the number,” she said irritably. “Can’t you hear tone?”
Bai Ningning looked at her in confusion, feeling deeply wronged.
But you asked how many. I answered honestly. Why are you still mad?
Seeing that she really didn’t get it, Qin Yue suppressed her temper and explained, “I emphasized those two words because the point is that ‘you took a few junior girls out’ is ridiculous. Ridiculous, get it?”
And way too brazen.
Bai Ningning tilted her cute little head. “Why is it ridiculous?”
“Because you’re dating me!” Qin Yue’s anger bar was almost full. “And we haven’t even broken up!”
That was true. They really hadn’t broken up. By the principles of procedural justice, there had never been a breakup process.
Bai Ningning tilted her adorable little head the other way. “Why can’t I take juniors out if I’m dating someone?”
Qin Yue went silent for two seconds, then raised a hand to undo her bathrobe.
There was no talking this through. Time to start the fight, damn it!
“Oh, I get it now.” Bai Ningning felt a chill in her chest and hurried to explain. “It wasn’t for fun. I took them out to help them find places to buy things.”
“Heh.” Qin Yue let out a cold laugh. “They couldn’t find them themselves?”
Do they not have hands, feet, and eyes?
“They really couldn’t. Or rather, it wasn’t convenient, because they’re all from out of town.” Bai Ningning stayed calm, her tone light. “Besides, this kind of thing is part of a volunteer’s actual duties. The student union asked me to do it. It’s written in the Volunteer Handbook.”
Big sis’s hand moved away from her bathrobe collar, and the girl’s heart finally dropped back into place.
That was close. Way too close.
Seriously, people these days. Why do they get mad so easily? Why can’t they be a little calm and understanding, like me?
“So,” Qin Yue said, spotting the shopping bag by the bed, “you took them shopping. How much did you spend?”
