Chapter 33: Shadowed by Doubt

A dog was still a dog.

Only now, the dog ears on its head seemed a bit sharper. If forced to describe it, the werewolf before her—holding a golden bird-headed staff—resembled a jackal with human limbs.

Jackals were wild dogs often seen scavenging carrion in graveyards.

Seeing this, Liu Xiyun frowned delicately, her gaze thoughtful.

"Could this be... Egypt’s god of death? The Anubis Divine Gene?" she said uncertainly.

Maid Little Green shook her head cluelessly. "I don’t know, miss. Brother Qin gave this to me. If I’d known it was this powerful, I’d have given it to you."

"... Liu Xiyun fell silent. Then, without any aversion, she stared directly at the werewolf—its ears now pointed, hair lengthened, clutching the golden bird-headed staff.

She said, "Good thing you didn’t give it to me. Otherwise, I’d have beaten you to death!"

"Ah!? That serious!?" Maid Little Green gaped in horror at Liu Xiyun’s dangerous glare.

Liu Xiyun said, "Hmph! I don’t care if you’re truly stupid or pretending, truly ignorant or faking it.

Each person can only contract one Divine Gene from the Divine Clan. Once linked, removing it later is incredibly difficult. I don’t want to become a death god like Anubis..."

Just the thought of daily contact with corpses, rotting bodies, and ghosts gave Liu Xiyun a trace of cold sweat.

She decided she must avoid casual contact with maid Little Green from now on, especially regarding blood.

If she ever got tricked by her, she wouldn’t even know where to cry...

"So what god do you want to become? Moon goddess? Love goddess? Chang’e? Xihe?" Maid Little Green asked curiously.

Liu Xiyun shook her head. "I don’t know."

Her Liu Clan wasn’t small; they had Divine Genes. But she hadn’t contracted one yet—not just from lacking a suitable match, but because she was waiting. Waiting for that legendary, destined opportunity.

Ancient myths spoke of Divine Gene inheritance. Records claimed they held subconsciousness; some great god inheritances even retained traces of self-awareness. Thus, Divine Genes sought their own inheritors, guided by fate.

A forced Divine Gene, without destined connection, was less compatible. Improvement came slower without that perfect match.

"Hmm... I think, seeing your aloof look, you’d suit the moon goddess," Maid Little Green analyzed.

As Liu Xiyun smiled and shook her head, turning toward the central battlefield, Little Green muttered under her breath, "But I don’t have the moon goddess’s inheritance."

"What did you say?" Liu Xiyun turned back, puzzled.

Maid Little Green quickly grinned. "I said, even though you seem suited for the moon goddess, if I had her Divine Gene, I’d use it myself—not give it to you."

"... Liu Xiyun shot her a disdainful look.

"Didn’t you say Qin Ling gave you the Anubis Divine Gene? Can you obtain them too?"

"Hmph!" Little Green shook her head. "I was just talking. Can’t I even say things anymore?"

"But I think you really lack something. How about I introduce you to Brother Qin? You’re so pretty; after getting familiar, maybe you’ll get together. He might give you a good Divine Clan gene then."

"That’s good. When?"

To Little Green’s surprise, Liu Xiyun—who’d been watching the central battlefield—actually agreed, leaving her stunned.

"What’s wrong?" Not hearing from Little Green as the werewolf and female vampire began an even fight, Liu Xiyun turned to her.

"Weren’t you going to introduce Brother Qin to me? When?"

"Are you serious?" Little Green’s big eyes sparkled as she locked gazes with Liu Xiyun, who didn’t look away and nodded.

"Why not? Or are you reluctant?"

Liu Xiyun’s gaze turned sharp, staring intently at Little Green. "Or can’t you even call Qin Ling?"

"Ah? Hah!?" Little Green averted her eyes to the battlefield, scratching her chin with a finger. "Impossible!?"

"Alright then! When? Once I find Brother Qin, I’ll have him come to you."

Liu Xiyun eyed the nervous Little Green suspiciously. "Can’t you both come? I’m not familiar with him. If you don’t come along when introducing him, what if things go wrong?"

"Ah... it shouldn’t be a problem. Brother Qin has such a good temper, and your personality is calm too. It should be fine," Little Green said after thinking.

These words made Liu Xiyun frown deeply. She didn’t speak, instead turning with Little Green to watch the werewolf and vampire clash.

Suddenly!

"Qin Ling!"

She called out to Little Green beside her.
