Chapter 37: The Morning Repast
update icon Updated at 2026/1/2 21:00:02

Early in the morning, Su Qing bustled in the kitchen, wearing a little apron.

"Hmm~ hmm-hmm~"

Humming through her nose, she watched Su Shui still snoring on the sofa.

"If Brother wakes up to hot breakfast, he’ll totally praise me~"

Wiping a thin layer of sweat from her forehead, Su Qing dipped a spoon into the soup.

"Mmm! Delicious~"

Just then, Lin Feng headed to the bathroom and saw Su Qing moving about under the morning sun.

For the first time in his eighteen years, this boy’s heart skipped a beat for a girl.

He stood dumbly at the doorway, shuffling like a puppet toward the toilet, eyes glued to her.

"Huh?"

Sensing a gaze, Su Qing sharply lifted her head.

Their eyes met. Lin Feng quickly looked away, pretending indifference as he hurried off.

"Hey, Lin Feng, come here~" Su Qing waved him over.

"Coming!" Lin Feng snapped to attention like a soldier, face stiff as he marched to the kitchen.

Inside, he was a nervous wreck. Every step felt wrong.

"I haven’t washed or brushed—do I have bad breath? What do I say? Ugh, my hair’s messy; I should’ve gelled it!"

Mind in chaos, Lin Feng didn’t even realize how he ended up before Su Qing.

So close, his heart hammered like struck by a sledgehammer.

His pulse raced. Breath caught. Face burned like fire.

"Try this~"

Su Qing held out a small plate with soup.

Lin Feng took it with trembling hands, careful not to brush her fair fingers.

He sipped tiny—but tasted nothing.

"Well? Good?"

Su Qing watched him, eyes full of hope.

Lin Feng had never seen such cuteness; even poison would taste sweet to him now.

"Delicious! Absolutely!"

"Glad you like it. That’s all~"

Su Qing waved him off, done with her taste-test guinea pig.

Like he’d won a prize, Lin Feng bounced out of the kitchen.

"We common folk~ today’s so happy~" Humming, he dashed to the bathroom.

"What a weird guy~" Su Qing muttered, watching him go.

If Lin Feng knew her thoughts, he might cry himself sick in there.

...

...

Su Shui lay on the sofa, restless all night.

How could he sleep? Woken every two hours, nonstop.

Conscious but unwilling to open his eyes.

"It’s Sunday. No one’s up yet. I’ll make breakfast later~"

Just drifting off, cooking aromas flooded his nose.

"So hungry!"

Stomach growling, he followed the scent to the kitchen.

Su Qing chopped veggies with a small knife.

Seeing Su Shui finally arrive, she dropped the knife she’d gripped too long.

"You’re awake! I’ve waited forever!" she thought—but said:

"Brother, you’re up~ Food’s almost ready. Rest more?" She smoothed his messy hair.

"Okay~" Su Shui turned obediently to leave.

Su Qing panicked—this wasn’t the plan!

"Wait!" She grabbed his sleeve. "Did you forget something?"

Eyes closed, she leaned her little head forward.

In her fantasy, he’d kiss her forehead gently, then watch her warmly from the table.

But Su Shui? He blew on his fingers and flicked her forehead hard.

*Thwack!*

"Listen to that sound—a good melon!" he teased.

Su Qing clutched her head, tears stinging. Her heart ached worse.

"Su Shui!" She snatched the knife, ready to chop him down.

"Alright, stop. Be good~"

Su Shui took the knife, patting her head softly.

Warmth from his big hand made her squint happily.

"This... this is cheating~" She blushed. "I’ll forgive you!"

As they stood there (just head-pats!), a voice called:

"Oh~ getting frisky this early?" Lin Ning leaned drowsily on the bedroom door, half-asleep.

"Whoa~" Su Shui grabbed candy and rushed over. "Low blood sugar again?"

He guided her to the sofa. She burrowed into his arms.

"Shuishui~ kiss me~"

"Uh... not a good idea~"

Seeing Su Qing’s fiery glare, he wisely held back.

Alone? He’d kiss her senseless in seconds.

"No~"

Lin Ning squirmed. Su Shui thanked his earlier self-control.

"Let’s talk in the bedroom..." He hugged her toward the door.

*Thud!*

In the kitchen, Su Qing smiled sweetly, slamming the knife into a cabbage.

Su Shui watched it split—and felt his neck go cold.

"I... I joked! Let’s eat here~"

He cuddled Lin Ning on the sofa, soothing her clinginess.

"Don’t nibble my face! I’m not washed~" He blocked her mouth—she sucked his finger with a *slurp*.

"Not the finger either!"

Su Qing glared at the cuddling pair, wishing she could chop that fickle man.

Huffing, she slammed dishes on the table.

"Eat! Get normal after!"

Only when Lin Ning sat did she relax.

"No trouble this time, right?"

She wanted Brother to taste her cooking—but Lin Ning leaned on Su Shui.

"Shuishui, feed me!"

"Ahhh~" "Ahhh~ mmm."

Watching Lin Ning enjoy being fed, Su Qing regretted making breakfast.

Meanwhile, Lin Feng still faced the bathroom mirror, adjusting his breath, nervous about eating with Su Qing.
