Chapter 21: Lin Ning on the Road
update icon Updated at 2025/12/19 21:00:02

After baking under the seaside sun for hours, Lin Ning finally saw Su Qing dragging Su Shui away.

"At last, they're leaving~" Lin Ning couldn't wait to hop into her sports car, cranking up the AC for cool relief.

Munching on bread in the driver's seat, she watched Su Qing pull Su Shui onto the most packed bus.

"Su Shui is so stingy—won't even hail a cab for a day out~"

Grumbling, she wolfed down the bread in three quick bites.

"Darn you, Su Shui! All because of you, I'm stuck eating bread!"

A red sports car trailed a bus down the road, drawing stares from passersby.

"Wow, bus drivers today are unreal—even sports cars can't overtake them!"

Stop-and-go traffic. Lin Ning hadn't felt this aggrieved since she first learned to drive.

Trailing the bus, memories of Su Shui teaching her surfaced. A soft smile touched her lips.

...

"Su Shui, I want to learn to drive!" Lin Ning suddenly declared, clinging to his arm.

"Why the sudden driver's license rush? You'll cry at driving school~" Su Shui winced, recalling his own grueling lessons. "Just let me drive you."

"Who said driving school?"

"Then what...?"

"You'll teach me~"

Su Shui stared at her serious face, then grabbed a nearby beer bottle and chugged two gulps.

"Honey, I've been drinking. Can't teach you now~"

"Who said today? Starting tomorrow!"

"No way!" Su Shui wailed, remembering her bumper car chaos—nearly launching it airborne.

"You have no choice. And drinking today? Couch duty for you!"

...

Su Shui stood before a small white car, helmet in hand.

"Honey, you're really doing this?"

"Of course! Why else would I scramble for this instructor car?"

"This is an instructor car?!" Su Shui jumped in, spotting the passenger-side brake pedal.

Relieved, he tossed the helmet aside. "Honey! I'll teach you!"

"Great!"

They settled into the car. The practice ground was a private football field, blocked off with stone slabs.

"Okay, basics first—you know brakes, right?"

"Got it!" Lin Ning sat ramrod straight like a schoolkid.

"Press clutch and brake all the way down. Slowly release the brake. Ease off the clutch with your left foot. Once it moves, stop releasing."

"Easy peasy~"

Lin Ning said it casually but dumped the brake and clutch at once.

The car lurched forward. This instructor car was solid—no stall!

Su Shui praised it, but Lin Ning was sweating bullets.

"Su Shui! What do I do?!" She gripped the wheel, eyes locked ahead.

"Don't panic. Press the clutch down slowly to slow~"

"Okay!" She stomped hard—and the car rocketed forward.

"Waaaaah!" Lin Ning screamed. Su Shui broke into a cold sweat, slamming the brake.

"Squeeeak~"

The car screeched to a halt inches from the wall.

"Whimper~" Lin Ning sobbed softly, trembling.

"Su Shui, I quit! Too scary!"

She buried herself in his chest, crying to escape.

"No way~" Su Shui gently stroked her hair. "You started this. I'll stay with you. Trust me~"

"Okay~" Lin Ning wiped tears and resettled in the driver's seat.

"Now, shift to reverse. Drive like before~"

This time, she eased off the brake, right foot hovering over the pedal. She inched the clutch up.

The car jolted. Lin Ning froze.

"Fine. Release a bit more~"

"Okay!" She nudged her foot.

"Don't tense. A little more~" Su Shui whispered in her ear.

Sweat dripped down her forehead. Legs stiff, she crept the clutch back.

The car rolled backward. Lin Ning beamed at Su Shui.

"Look! It's moving! Moving!"

Her face screamed "Praise me!" as she waited expectantly.

"Good, good! Brilliant!" Su Shui patted her head.

"Hehehe~" Lin Ning grinned like a cat, nuzzling into his palm.

Just as they basked in the moment, the car crashed into the wall with a loud clang.

They stared at each other, then burst out laughing.

...

Days passed. Su Shui patiently coached Lin Ning.

The car grew dented and peeling—looking salvaged from a scrapyard—but Lin Ning drove smoothly now. She even showed off one-handed steering while chatting.

Before she could get cocky, she botched an S-curve. The door scraped a rock with a screech.

"Accident! Just an accident~" Lin Ning smiled awkwardly, yanking the wheel to escape.

"See? No overconfidence~" Su Shui advised gently from the passenger seat.

"Got it!"

...

Beep! Beep!

A car horn snapped Lin Ning from her reverie. The bus was pulling away—she floored the gas to follow.

She waited in her car until Su Shui and Su Qing entered the cinema, then slipped in after.

Spotting them buy horror movie tickets, Lin Ning's internal alarm blared.

"Sorry, Xiao Qing. Money really does buy anything!"

Lin Ning pulled out her phone, a mischievous grin spreading.

"Uncle Lin? It's Xiao Ning. Can you snag me a ticket at my local cinema? Yeah, seat beside Su Shui—we got split up~"

Within minutes, an attendant guided her to the theater.

"Miss, Mr. Su Shui's seat is right here."

"Thanks, that's all~" Lin Ning waved them off.

She settled in, adjusting sunglasses and mask, ready to trap Su Shui.

"Darn you, Su Shui. No escape this time!"

Soon, Su Shui and Su Qing walked in hand in hand. Lin Ning itched to chop their fingers apart.

"Stay calm. Stay calm!" she chanted silently.

Su Qing checked tickets, then approached.

"Excuse me, could we switch seats? We're together—wrong tickets~"

Lin Ning bit her lip, pretending to sleep.

Su Qing sighed and retreated.

The movie started. When the crowd gasped, Lin Ning instantly buried herself in Su Shui's chest.

"Ahhh!"

"Wife?" Su Shui recognized the scream and the soft weight in his arms.

It was his own wife!
