After dealing with the Monsters darting wildly across the road, Night Frost built a campfire on the grassland. Eye Orb dissected the Monsters and left a field of bones behind. The remaining meat was skewered over the flames, roasting quietly.
Beneath the night sky, Night Frost directed the sparks, sending them rising into the air. They burst into tiny orange-red points, then were blown out by the wind.
“Li Dogegg, dinner’s ready.”
Li Dogegg was naturally the first to enjoy the feast. It didn’t mind at all. It was still growing and happened to be short on food. Now that all this food had been delivered right in front of it, there was no reason to refuse.
It had inspected the Monster earlier. The one Night Frost had dealt with was an ordinary herbivorous Monster. It wasn’t poisonous and contained nothing strange. After being roasted over the fire, it was perfectly safe to eat.
So Li Dogegg swallowed the roasted meat Night Frost had just lifted from the campfire in three quick bites.
It was a little hot, but with Eye Orb and Night Frost’s homemade seasoning, it tasted pretty good. Before this, Li Dogegg had lived on a diet of raw flesh and Blood in the Abyss. Most of the things it ate had tasted unbearably awful.
When had it ever enjoyed such a delicacy?
They said there were humanoid cities in this place, too. But most of the humanoids here struggled just to survive, let alone eat and drink well.
Once Li Dogegg had devoured most of the meat, Night Frost began eating without ceremony. As expected of a Monster from the 【Myth】 Abyss, its meat was far better than the livestock of the lower world.
Even with such simple cooking, it had an incredibly fresh and sweet flavor.
High-end ingredients really did need nothing more than simple cooking.
After cleaning everything up, Night Frost was about to return to the carriage and rest. Then the sounds of fighting in the distance made her stop.
Night Frost hadn’t wanted to interfere. After leaving the forest, they had traveled several more miles, and she had begun encountering large numbers of Monsters.
Perhaps all the Monsters from the forest had fled onto the grassland. That was why the grassland wasn’t as peaceful as she had imagined.
Every so often, she encountered Monsters fighting over territory. Some powerful Monsters could even speak human language. Others declared themselves kings.
In short, the more chaotic things became, the better.
These conflicts were especially frequent at midnight. The grassland was home to many nocturnal Monsters, and they were all fairly aggressive. Sudden Monster brawls often erupted in the dead of night.
At first, Night Frost also assumed this was merely another midnight Monster fight. But she was part of 【Cantata Two】, so her hearing was fairly sharp.
Why did the sound resemble metal striking metal?
And why were there also cries from living creatures?
Li Dogegg had said that two-legged creatures similar to humans lived in the Abyss. Whether or not they could communicate, following them should lead to the cities of those humanoids.
Then Night Frost’s group could obtain a more accurate map and find the birthplace of the Calamity Dragon.
Of course, the source of the sound might not be humanoids at all. It could also be a trap set by some powerful and bizarre Monster.
“I’ll go take a look.”
Night Frost glanced at Eye Orb and Li Dogegg beside the campfire. She planned to go alone. Eye Orb and Li Dogegg would watch the carriage and keep an eye on their surroundings.
If anything happened, they only needed to notify her immediately.
A streak of crimson-gold fire flashed across the night sky. Night Frost’s nimble body landed lightly on the nearby grass, leaving two charred footprints behind.
The surroundings were completely open. Night Frost hadn’t gone far before she could use her hawk eyes to see the distant scene.
A wolf-shaped Monster several meters tall stood with its forelegs slightly bent. It swayed its spike-covered tail, while its oily green eyes fixed coldly on the front.
It prowled around its prey.
Wolf-shaped Monsters were practically old friends of Night Frost’s. She encountered them almost every time. Like the spiders nearby, they loved showing off their presence.
This particular Monster wasn’t very strong. It was only at the 【Cantata Two】 level, which posed no great threat to Night Frost now.
Her gaze followed the giant wolf’s eyes and landed on its prey.
It was a group made up of a pointy-eared elf, a Halfbeast, and several creatures who looked exactly like humans.
Night Frost had never expected to encounter so many humanoids at once. This was practically a pie falling from the sky.
The Halfbeast was huge, and reminded her of Lin. Come to think of it, Lin and this fellow did look rather similar.
Did mixed-blood offspring really possess such obvious advantages? Or were purebloods actually stronger?
The pointy-eared elf seemed capable of magic and could chant a Magic Spell. She basically fit the definition of a Magic Maiden.
Did that mean she counted as a Magic Maiden?
Night Frost couldn’t help pondering the question.
As for the humans, the ones before her were extremely weak. Night Frost didn’t know whether Magic Maidens existed in the 【Myth】 Abyss.
But judging from what Li Dogegg had said, Fallen Ones existed here. If that was true, then Magic Maidens should exist as well, right?
Still, there was no use thinking about it now. Those people clearly couldn’t handle the Monster before them.
For a moment, Night Frost even wondered if she had already left the 【Myth】 Abyss. Of course, she might simply have been judging things too early. She had encountered too many powerful Monsters and survived by the skin of her teeth every time.
The group muttered among themselves. Night Frost could barely understand a word.
A language barrier was only natural.
The giant wolf charged at the group. With a single lunge, it sent the Halfbeast flying and threw the entire formation into chaos.
A human at the front shouted orders. Under his direction, the group quickly returned to its original formation.
The elf raised her staff and finished her chant. A rain of sharp Mana arrows flew from the runes above the staff.
But the giant wolf reacted swiftly, and the elf’s attack missed completely.
At the edge of the formation, another human drew his bow. Strange devices seemed to be tied to the arrowheads, allowing him to fire arrows of different attributes.
They could only delay the giant wolf, though. Their effect was negligible.
The group’s lineup wasn’t particularly strong. The most powerful among them were the elf and the Halfbeast.
The Halfbeast was strong, but even he couldn’t withstand the giant wolf’s charge. The elf’s strength was decent, but her aim was rather poor.
Still, it looked like Night Frost wouldn’t need to act. The group had some skill. Their strength was actually decent, and they seemed capable of dealing with this giant wolf.
The only problem was the wolf pack slowly gathering in the distance.
If those Monsters joined the fight, this group would probably die here.
Night Frost decided to watch a little longer. Perhaps they had some other tricks.
She wanted to see the combat methods of the 【Myth】 Abyss, which were completely different from those of the lower world.
After adjusting his stance, the Halfbeast raised his axe and leaped onto the giant wolf, striking down at its body.
The elf seized the opening. She pulled a scroll from her waist and spread it open in front of herself.
Mysterious incantations surfaced across its surface.
She raised her staff. Light burst from it, while invisible Mana manipulated the soil and stones beneath the giant wolf.
The earth piled up around its four limbs, locking its movements in place.
Was that an Array Pattern?
It looked somewhat similar to a contract scroll. At the very least, their methods of creation had certain similarities.
This scroll seemed to contain a special Array Pattern. The elf used a unique method to activate it.
A white light flashed from within.
What a powerful attack!
The white light pierced through the giant wolf, opening a massive Blood-filled hole in its body. Blood sprayed from the wound.
After struggling for several seconds, the giant wolf crashed to the ground.
Its remaining nerves twitched weakly against the earth. The people who looked like complete beginners cheered in celebration.
None of them seemed to have anticipated the danger that came next.
The wolf pack was already nearby, yet they acted as if they couldn’t see it at all.
The elf collapsed weakly onto the ground to recover her Mana. The Halfbeast and the humans began treating their injuries.
The human who had been holding the bow earlier was especially idle. He simply stood around with nothing to do.
Because of his negligence, the group was walking straight toward the Abyss.
They might not have had the strength to resist the wolf pack anymore, but if they fought with their lives on the line, a few of them could still survive.
The elf, for example.
Or perhaps the Halfbeast.
Under normal circumstances, at least.
The wolf pack drew closer.
Hidden within the darkness, they slipped through the withered yellow grass and gradually crept up beside the group.
The next moment, the crouching wolves moved.
Their targets were the two weakest humans.
The wolf pack was cunning. It preferred to attack the weak, and those two humans fit its target perfectly.
The alpha wolf made its move. Several wolves lunged first and bit down on the archer’s neck. The rest of the pack pounced toward the elf and another human.
Night Frost, who was also crouching in the tall grass, moved.
In the eyes of the others, she appeared like a ghost. She reached the wolf pack’s rear in an instant.
Flames flashed out and scorched the fur of the wolf biting the archer. Before it could release its jaws, Night Frost burned it into a dry, charred lump of meat.
The elf was frightened by the wolf that had lunged at her. She could barely keep hold of her staff.
Seeing this, Night Frost threw her Spear backward.
A wall of fire rose before the elf and blocked the wolf pack. Night Frost then charged toward the area with the greatest concentration of wolves.
She chanted a Magic Spell. The Magic Stone on her wrist released a dazzling light.
The Spear fell, pinning every wolf within sight to the ground.
Then a wall of fire rose and enclosed everything around them, creating a temporary safe zone.
The group seemed suspicious. Or perhaps they were grateful.
Either way, Night Frost couldn’t understand a word they were saying.
She summoned Li Dogegg from the familiar space. After listening to her explanation, Li Dogegg shook its head as well.
It didn’t understand their language either.
Night Frost scratched her head and looked helplessly toward the sky.
The group also seemed to harbor an inexplicable hostility toward Li Dogegg. So she told it to get back where it came from.
Li Dogegg returned to the familiar space.
After all, it was a Monster. Being hated by the locals was only natural.
Although the elf’s aim was unreliable, she seemed to realize that Night Frost couldn’t understand their language. She tried switching between different languages to communicate with her.
“Whew, ha, roar, guda, gusha…”
Li Dogegg reacted.
Night Frost didn’t react at all, because she couldn’t understand a single word.
But Li Dogegg seemed to understand.
It crawled out of the familiar space, only to have the group of burly men point their swords at it the moment it appeared.
Night Frost hurriedly stopped them.
