Chapter 22: After Breakup
update icon Updated at 2025/2/18 6:10:12

"Wolfrang, you remind me so much of a brother I used to have, really." - Although Wolfrang didn't understand, he smiled and patted my back.

According to the rules, divorce involves splitting assets, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Those things were bought with Medusa's money in the first place. I spent a night sleeping outside the cave with Wolfrang, and the next day I woke up early, packed some essentials, and prepared to start my journey. Leya insisted on giving me some money, but I declined.

The result of last night's discussion was that I would go with Wolfrang to the werewolf settlement, while Leya would stay with Medusa for a while. This was the best solution, at least they didn't leave me all alone.

It had been a long time since I wore the leather shoes I bought for over 700 yuan at the mall, and they were surprisingly comfortable, much better than the ones here. I put on a white shirt and rolled up the sleeves, feeling like a handsome guy ready to hit the club and pick up girls.

The days without a wife were all about freedom, doing whatever I wanted~

After saying goodbye to Leya, I didn't even bother to look at Medusa still sleeping. I directly set off on the journey with Wolfrang towards the werewolf settlement in the south. I led the cart along, because if I left it here, Medusa would probably eat it. Plus, the journey was long, and I had a bunch of guns in my luggage. I couldn't make Wolfrang carry all that for me.

"Even without Medusa by my side, I am still a strong man. I can still live a good life!"

Saying this to myself, I resolved to make my own way with my own strength.

......

But there wasn't a single man who wouldn't feel sad or heartbroken after leaving a woman he once deeply loved. If there really was such a person, they would be heartless.

Driving the cart, I chatted with the werewolves without any rhyme or reason.

"Raul, are you unhappy?"

"Hey, I'm fine."

"Hehe, look at you, you don't even ask me about my family."

"Why should I ask? You can't eat me, can you~"

"Hoho, you never know."

"Hey, don't scare me..."

"Don't worry, we werewolves never eat humans."

"Hey, then what do you eat?"

"You'll find out in a few days."

What werewolves eat, that's actually an interesting question. Not to mention anything else, werewolves' big paws can't handle knives and forks, right? Looking at Wolfrang's appearance, maybe werewolves are civilized and polite creatures too.

Calculating the time, it would take at least five days to reach Wolfrang's hometown. The main problem for these five days was food. Werewolf and human lifestyles were very similar, sleeping during the day and being active at night. They also needed to eat every day. And the reason they were called werewolves was because these creatures couldn't transform between human and wolf forms like in legends, they were born in the shape of wolves.

Werewolves are people who can turn into wolves, while werewolves are wolves that are like people.

There is a fundamental difference.

Wolfrang also mentioned that werewolves, like humans, need both a male and a female wolf to mate in order to have children. Actually, Wolfrang and Leya's love was no easier than mine and Medusa's, at least Medusa and I could still have children...

Sigh, why did it always come back to Medusa? I don't want to think about her, I don't want to~

It's difficult to get a sense of direction in the forest, but it's not a problem for creatures like them. Succubi can fly and look around, werewolves can climb to the top of trees and use telescopes to observe the terrain. I can only rely on my inherited sense of direction.

They say women are like water, so when two women are together, you can call it "lilies," a word that represents purity and clarity.

They say men are like excrement, so when two men are together, it's disgusting and can only be described as "gay."

Then the question arises, what do men and women call it when they are together? "Toilet sex"?

...

I laughed at my own thoughts. When unable to enjoy love, I would find ways to make fun of it. It's called "self-comfort" in a nice way, and "sour grapes" in a not-so-nice way.

When I was with Wolfrang, time passed quickly. In the blink of an eye, the sun had set. Although we could still travel a little further, we were being followed by some wild beasts. Of course, it would be difficult for me to detect them with my senses, but the werewolves told me. The current choice was simple: drive away the group of beasts and set up camp to rest.

I propped up the rifle on my shoulder and began reloading each handgun. Wolfrang took off his suit jacket and unbuttoned the cuffs, leaning his body against the car. It was incredible that we were facing a group of beasts so leisurely. Perhaps this is the difference between friends and lovers; both Wolfrang and I trusted each other completely and believed that the other would not be in danger.

The sun was setting again, surrounded by the forest, and even the roar of the beasts was familiar to us – yes, it was the same roar I used to hear when I still lived in a cave. Today, I would finally see the true face of these creatures.

"Mr. Wolfrang, are you okay?"

"Heh, Mr. Raul, you should worry about yourself."

The banter between friends ended, and the beasts began to circle around us.

From the glimpses of their bodies between the trees and the occasional appearance of their heads, they looked a lot like an animal I knew called "hyenas". However, hyenas theoretically do not live in forests; these gregarious carnivores mainly inhabit the African savannah. Moreover, hyenas rarely attack humans, and this characteristic clearly does not apply to this parallel world.

There were a large number of hyenas, the most underestimated predators by humans. They often engage in a battle for prey with African lions at a ratio of ten to one and often end up with half-half outcomes.

"Huaga~ Ga~ Ga~ Ga~"

It seemed that the strange and terrifying howling had also been inherited. Suddenly, Wolfrang, like a wolf, let out a wild roar. However, even the king of African terrestrial carnivores – the African lion – could not scare away hyenas with its loud voice, let alone Wolfrang's wolf-like howl.

Obviously surprised, Wolfrang shrugged, indicating that we will have to resort to violence.

The hyenas were smart; they judged strength and weakness of their prey based on their body size. The number of hyenas around me and the buffalo increased, and it seemed that these fierce creatures wanted to use me or the buffalo as their first victims. The buffalo continuously stomped its hooves, very agitated.

"Bang!"

I fired the rifle into the air, one last attempt at intimidation. This time, although the hyenas hesitated for a moment, it was clear that they were not scared and continued to encircle us. I threw away the rifle and took out my revolver...

Damn it! The hyenas weren't coming one by one to offer themselves!

The situation instantly spiraled out of control; at least five hyenas pounced straight at me! They rushed towards me and the buffalo behind me. I raised my hand and the first shot hit the hyena's chest directly in front of me. Turning around, at point-blank range, the second shot struck the hyena's head that had just leapt at the buffalo. The third shot, supporting myself against the cart, narrowly missed hitting Wolfrang, who was protecting me.

The fourth shot hit a hyena that was tearing into Wolfrang's back with its entire body; the fifth shot remained in the chamber, aimed at the hyena group that was continuously retreating.

After the battle ended, I counted seven numbers in my mind.

"Gawoo... Ga... Ga... Woo..."

The hyenas showed signs of weakness, seemingly weighing the losses and gains of the battle. They decisively gave up on us, quickly disappearing into the forest. As they left, they even dragged the bodies of two of their companions who were closer to them.

"Phew~ That was terrifying."

"Yeah, even I got bitten."

"By the way, are you okay with that appearance of yours?"

Wolfrang had four symmetrical holes on his shoulder, and blood soaked his fur.

"This? I'm fine. It'll heal in two days."

"Two days?!"

"Yeah, two days will be enough."

Being called one of the strongest creatures on land as a werewolf has its advantages, not only in terms of immense power but also astonishing regenerative abilities. Although these do not help them gain any advantage in hand-to-hand combat with Medusa.

Damn it, why did I think of Medusa again? Isn't it already over?!

Trying to shake off the image of the snake-haired woman that lingered in my mind, Wolfrang and I lit a bonfire with the light from the lantern. We didn't have much food to satisfy our hunger, so we could only roast these hyenas and eat them.

However, after dissecting the hyenas, there was a foul smell. Wolfrang furrowed his brow, and after roasting, the meat turned out to be no different from firewood. In the end, we decided that Wolfrang would eat the hyena meat, and I would eat the leftover dried rations from my previous journey because even Wolfrang himself couldn't guarantee that there wouldn't be any problems with this meat.

We sat around the campfire, talking about the battle we just had.

"So, how many did we take down?"

"Well... exactly six, I think."

"Oh~ We're pretty strong, aren't we?"

"Haha. I feel like you've gotten stronger since you left her."

"Is that so? I think the same."

"So, do you think you can defeat her?"

"Hahaha... of course not."

"So, you already know that humans and monsters are completely different."

Wolfrang threw aside a half-eaten piece of hyena leg bone, sat next to me, and picked up the revolver I had just loaded.

"If you attack me with this gun and I don't attack you, can you kill me?"

"Huh? Attack you with this gun?"

"Yes, you can go ahead and try."

"No... I can't. I don't want to attack my friend. But can you really withstand five bullets?"

"Of course, my body has been hit by over ten bullets before. Can you tell?"

Wolfrang patted his chest, looking rather proud. But seeing that I wasn't amused, he patted my shoulder.

"So, there are things you can do, and things you can never do."

"Are you trying to prove that I'm completely different from her too?"

"No, what you need to do is to do what you can do well."

We lit up our cigarettes, and like a senior and a student, we talked about the meaning of life.
