Chapter 12: How did it end up like this?
update icon Updated at 2023/7/19 15:10:12

Soul devouring is the instinct of demons. In their eyes, the more tormented a soul is, the more delicious it becomes. Almost every demon's growth is inseparable from cannibalizing their own kind, devouring the souls and bodies of their kind to strengthen themselves is the way of survival in hell.

I once witnessed a large Fiend devouring its own offspring... I cannot fathom why it would eat its own young. Perhaps it's evolutional necessity, or maybe its mind has gone awry, or simply because it was hungry... or it might have found it amusing...

The behavior of demons is something we humans can never comprehend, just like how you would never know what dreams your own cat has when it's sleeping.

- Excerpt from "The Adventure Journal of Explorer Horadas"

Using the tactic of luring enemies and then delivering a fatal blow from a higher position, I easily killed five small Fiends, feeling relaxed and proud.

Just as I was planning to continue hunting in this manner, a powerful large Fiend appeared. It was stronger than the ordinary small Fiends, with arms thicker than the legs of small Fiends, and taller by at least a head.

The large Fiend walked swaggeringly on the sandy ground, and it didn't take long for it to discover the seven or eight small Fiend corpses hidden beneath the large rock where I was hiding. It ran over eagerly and without hesitation, grabbed an arm, and viciously tore at it as if it was a starving ghost who hadn't eaten for months.

As I lay on the large rock, looking at the strong and domineering large Fiend below, and then at the rock in my hand, I didn't know what decision to make. If it weren't for the battle strength of the large Fiend that I witnessed when I saved Yi Yi, I would probably have foolishly jumped down and smashed its head with the rock.

At that time, the Goblin army completely surrounded Yi Yi, and countless small Fiends and large Fiends charged at the Goblin formation to protect Yi Yi. However, all the small Fiends died under the combined attack of the Goblins, without exception. Only the large Fiends were able to enter the encirclement alive.

From this, we can see the vast difference between large Fiends and small Fiends.

Not only in terms of physical strength, but the endurance, defensive capability, and fighting spirit of large Fiends are all far superior to small Fiends.

Therefore, I didn't foolishly think that I was the protagonist and go down to knock the large Fiend unconscious. If I had done so, the only result would have been me being torn into pieces by the large Fiend and then eaten...

Speaking of which, this guy can really eat. I waited on the large rock for at least two hours, and the large Fiend sat on the sandy ground, devouring the bodies of all the small Fiends. It ate them all!

During this period, there were naturally some other small Fiends that wanted to get a share, but after being stared at by the large Fiend, without exception, they obediently went back to their moms.

This guy is really fearsome... Although in my opinion, it's just a first-class loser. Um, I seem to be a zero-class loser myself, so I have no standing to criticize others.

Finally, the large Fiend finished eating the corpses. It patted its belly dazedly, surprisingly showing no intention of leaving. Instead, it lay down on the sandy ground, closed its eyes, and soon started snoring...

Eat until full, then sleep, not caring whether there is danger in this place; this guy is really exceptional.

Should I take advantage of this opportunity to kill it? Hmm, it may not be a good idea. If it's not deep asleep or just pretending to sleep and wakes up when I attack, then what should I do?

As I was contemplating whether or not to take the risk, three small Fiends actually came together. The three little guys didn't fight as soon as they met. Instead, they stealthily approached, and in no time, they all moved to the side of the large Fiend.

The three small ones chattered for a while, perhaps due to the fact that they had turned into demons, I could strangely understand the demon language. Their conversation was a bit fragmented, and listening was a bit tiring, but I roughly understood. They were discussing how to deal with the large Fiend.

One of them was more clever, knowing that stones are harder than fists. So it first found a piece of stone and held it in its hand, making a motion of hitting with a stone. The other companions followed suit and searched for stones on the ground, and soon everyone had one.

The leading little one signaled for everyone to attack together on the count of three. The three stones almost simultaneously struck the large Fiend's head!

Unfortunately, there was no splattering brain matter or blood flying everywhere as imagined. The stone attacks only left three big lumps on the large Fiend's head...

Being attacked on the head, even a large Fiend with nerves thicker than its lower regions couldn't bear it. It woke up, opened its eyes, first touched its slightly painful head, and then realized the three small Fiends surrounding it."What are you...doing here?"

"We...we..."

Young, low-ranking demons are so stupid, they can't even tell a lie. The three little fiends looked at each other, not thinking much, two of them turned and ran, leaving only one thinking that its teammates were planning to confront the enemy head-on. Fearless, it jumped up and swung the stone in its hand with all its strength, hitting the big fiend on the forehead once again.

The big fiend foolishly stared at the other two little demons running away, ignoring the brave one in front of it. Its head was once again hit, but unfortunately, it had no effect this time either.

"Roar! I will devour you all!"

Finally managing to speak a full sentence, the big fiend roared angrily, grabbing the little fiend in front of it and biting down. In just one bite, it severed the unfortunate demon's windpipe. After killing the little demon, the big fiend noticed that the other two were already far away. I don't know what was going through the big fiend's mind, but it didn't chase the other little fiends. Instead, it sat down and picked up the freshly killed little fiend to gnaw on.

I was speechless on the rock...watching the big fiend eat was already nauseating enough, but now...aren't you already full?

The big fiend didn't eat quickly, perhaps not very hungry, as it stopped halfway through. I thought it had gotten tired of eating, but then it suddenly raised its head and saw a group of little fiends rushing towards it not far away.

What's going on? Dozens of little fiends coming to fight the big boss together?

Wherever the big fiend's eyes could reach, a group of more than ten little fiends rushed towards it. Although the little fiends all looked almost the same, I instinctively felt that the two leading ones were the ones who had just escaped.

The little fiends surrounded the big fiend as soon as they approached. And the big fiend? It was still sitting there calmly, eating the corpse with every bite, looking at the other little fiends with eyes that were clearly filled with the desire to eat!

"Roar!"

The big fiend used its voice to show its strength, hoping to intimidate the little fiends. It had used this method many times before, and it was effective. However, this time it miscalculated. In its stupid head, it couldn't possibly imagine that all the little fiends gathered here were the ones it had scared away before. These little demons, after fleeing, did not kill each other when they encountered their kind again; instead, they temporarily united.

They were different from other little fiends. They seemed to have formed a group. Although the difference in individual combat power was not significant, and they were not subordinate to each other, they had united because of the threat from a stronger opponent.

Newly born low-ranking demons were not very intelligent. These instinctual beings had always followed their desires. Being able to unite was already a miracle.

The big fiend was undoubtedly skilled in fighting against the little fiends, as it was a strong player. Thus, it arrogantly believed that no matter how many little fiends there were, they were just a bunch of nothings. Unconsciously, it showed a contemptuous expression.

However, intimidation didn't work. An impatient expression appeared on the big fiend's ugly face. It broke the neck of the corpse in its hand and casually smashed it towards one of the little fiends in front of it, trying to establish dominance through this method.

The result was predictable. The little fiend hit by the flying head in the chest staggered and fell to the ground, its head hitting a small stone. Poor little thing let out a few cries as it tried to get up from the ground, but unfortunately, it didn't succeed. Its head was injured quite badly, and it probably couldn't get up for a while.

One blow was effective. The big fiend lifted its head triumphantly, split its mouth into a silly grin, and bits of minced flesh and blood dripped down from its big bloody mouth, against its red skin, it looked like a demon straight from hell.

The big fiend thought that after showing its strength, the little fiends would scatter in the face of the gap between the two sides. But it didn't expect the opposite result. This blow only ignited the little demons' determination to fight desperately.

Because excessive displays of strength can backfire.

"Ao Ao Ao Ao!"

The little fiends swarmed over, some hugging legs, some hugging arms, some biting necks, and some embracing waists. The big fiend was almost instantly overwhelmed by the little fiends.

A group of more than ten little fiends attacking all together, even the big fiend couldn't withstand it.

In just a short ten seconds, the big fiend was bitten and torn apart by the little fiends, and a tortured expression of pain appeared on its ferocious face. When the little Fiends stopped attacking, the big Fiend had no intact flesh left on its body. It lay on the sandy ground like a boneless ball of meat, whimpering softly.

With one final effort, it seemed that the big Fiend was about to meet its demise.

At that moment, all the little Fiends simultaneously ceased their attacks and distanced themselves from each other. They looked at each other, their eyes filled with various emotions.

I could guess what they were thinking - they wanted to consume the soul and body of the big Fiend for themselves.

Without any warning, the little Fiends started fighting amongst themselves. I sat on a rock, eagerly watching the spectacle, missing only a bag of sunflower seeds.

The battle between the little Fiends was fierce, with neither side stronger than the other. They had no weapons, only their nails and teeth as the most primitive means of attack. The fight was exceptionally bloody.

Before long, there were hardly any good pieces of meat left on the bodies of the little Fiends involved in the fight.

As the number of little Fiends diminished, only five remained, and they finally stopped fighting. As there was an odd number, one of them would be left alone.

As someone who was enjoying the show from atop a rock, I was very aware of why there suddenly appeared an additional little demon. That extra one was the one that had been hit on the head by the big Fiend earlier. It had been watching its kind kill each other on the sandy ground for a while, becoming agitated and finally recovering from the pain in its head. It immediately climbed up and joined the circle, taking on two opponents at once and quickly dispatching two of them who were engaged in a critical struggle.

What an idiot! If it were me, I would have waited until the end to climb up and kill the last surviving fighter and then devour the big Fiend.

Just as I was watching the most thrilling part of the movie, the bodies of the two fighting little Fiends suddenly collapsed to the ground, one after the other, followed by two cries of agony.

I quickly looked over and was astonished to find that the mastermind behind it all was the almost dying big Fiend!

Despite being severely injured, it had not died immediately. It feigned near-death by the side, quietly recovering its strength. Seeing that the last five little Fiends were no longer fighting but only watching, it became more anxious than anyone else.

Humans cannot afford to be impatient; when they get impatient, they come up with ingenious ideas, just as demons do. The stupid big Fiend, like a pig, thought of the tactic of a surprise attack. It quietly approached, suddenly grabbing the legs of two little Fiends and forcefully pulling them down to the ground. With its left hand holding down one's neck, it pressed it onto the sandy ground, while the other one was bitten on the neck.

The biting force of the big Fiend was much stronger than that of the little Fiends. When they were bitten on the neck, it only took a few seconds for their lives to be extinguished. The other little Fiend soon followed.

After killing the two little Fiends, the big Fiend revealed a savage smile to the three remaining ones.

The little Fiends looked at each other in horror, not knowing whether to fight or flee.

Damn it! Despite being so injured, this idiot still managed to turn the tables. Unbelievable!

The soul of the big Fiend must be much stronger than that of the little Fiends, and this big Fiend had killed countless little Fiends. It was definitely one of the stronger ones among the big Fiends, possibly even reaching the top of the first rank, with the potential to enter the second rank at any time.

The three little Fiends were all injured, their combat capabilities definitely compromised. If... there was no need for if, the little Fiends weren't stupid. In the blink of an eye, they scattered in different directions, not repeating the same escape route.

Seeing the three little Fiends flee in fear, the big Fiend seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. It no longer displayed its domineering expression, rolling over and lazily resting on the sandy ground, squinting its eyes as if enjoying the moment.

Should I jump down and attack it now? The answer was a definitive yes. If I didn't take action at a time like this, there must be something wrong with my brain.

I shouted loudly, mustering all the courage, and jumped down from the big rock, aiming for the head of the resting big Fiend. The large stone in my hand felt as heavy as a thousand pounds!

An attack from above would become powerful due to the acceleration of gravity. I originally thought that this strike would at most injure or stun the big Fiend, leading to a bloody battle afterward. I didn't expect that the big Fiend would be instantly killed by this strike to the head... it was dead.Me: "..."

I originally thought it would be a tough battle.

The soul of the Great Fiend was sucked in through my nose and mouth, and my body felt like a warm furnace, gradually heating up and feeling extremely comfortable. Unconsciously, I slowly closed my eyes, savoring the feeling of soaking in a hot spring in the winter.

Unexpectedly, my enjoyment was interrupted by the sound of footsteps. It made me feel unsafe in the depths of purgatory, so I immediately opened my eyes, only to see the three small Fiends that had escaped earlier returning.

Hmph, they've come back. I've become stronger, so just clean your necks and wait for death... But can I really handle all three small Fiends, especially the one that's completely unharmed?

Maybe it's better to not suffer any losses... Should I run away?

But is it really okay to run away without even fighting?

Maybe I should try to scare them. With this decision in mind, I was preparing to swing the stone in my hand and strike a dominant pose. However, when I focused my gaze, I realized that the three of them were actually kneeling on both feet and knees... They were groveling...
