5. Not the Same

Tap!

His sneakers splashed through puddles, spraying water onto his cuffs, but the boy didn’t care. His eyes stayed fixed ahead. The plaza’s lights were already coming into view.

Unlike professional Demon Hunters, Bai Chen was only an affiliated member of the Demon Hunter organization. Compared with its full members, he lacked formal training and real combat experience against monsters.

When the shop manager called to say something strange had been spotted at Wanhua Plaza, Bai Chen felt more nervous than excited.

Even though the rain had stopped some time ago, the streets of Wind Chime City still hadn’t returned to their usual liveliness.

In the end, it was because the recent string of murders had caused such a stir. Residents were going out less often at night.

If it really is that killer, can I win on my own? Bai Chen still wanted to live to a ripe old age. He didn’t want to die in the prime of his life.

He wanted to find the person who’d killed his parents, but with his current abilities, he was more likely to get himself into trouble.

As he stepped into Wanhua Plaza, Bai Chen stopped and warily scanned his surroundings.

There were usually plenty of middle-aged and elderly women dancing here, but the rain had left the plaza deserted. Still, there shouldn’t have been not a single person around...

Where was the strange thing the shop manager had mentioned?

Just as he was on high alert, he heard a noise behind him and spun around. The sight before him made him suck in a sharp breath.

“Don’t run! Stop right there!”

“Hey, you over there! Get out of the way!”

Several men, naked from the waist down, charged toward him at a full sprint, their legs pumping like they were running the hundred meters. As they ran, they flipped off the police officers chasing them.

The officers in pursuit were clearly exhausted, stumbling along as they ran.

They were close enough for Bai Chen to see exactly what he least wanted to see.

They came in every size, from eagle to chick. As their owners ran, they bounced around freely, proudly showing off their manhood.

The sight was so awful he suddenly wished he could get a new pair of eyes.

Bai Chen finally understood why the plaza was empty. Even women with skin as thick as a wall couldn’t stand having a bunch of pantsless perverts flashing them.

When the men ran past, Bai Chen didn’t dodge. Instead, he stuck out a hand or a foot, tripping some of the perverts and grabbing the others by the collar.

The perverts lost their footing and tumbled into a pile. The officers caught up a moment later and handcuffed them all.

“Thanks, kid. You’ve got some good moves.”

Bai Chen showed them his Demon Hunter credentials, and the officers immediately looked surprised.

“You’re a Demon Hunter? You’re so young.”

They’d expected some seasoned older guy to show up, not a young man.

Bai Chen put away his credentials and glanced at the perverts.

“These are the strange ones you reported?”

“That’s right.”

For a moment, Bai Chen felt like he’d been played. Even as an affiliated member, catching exhibitionists wasn’t part of his job.

They weren’t the serial killer. He didn’t know whether to feel relieved or disappointed.

As Bai Chen grumbled to himself, his gaze swept over the perverts—and stopped.

Hadn’t he seen them somewhere before?

Right. Weren’t these the punks from earlier this evening?

The guys in front of him all had vacant, idiotic expressions. Their eyes wandered, their mouths hung open, and drool ran down their chins. You’d think they’d escaped from a mental hospital. It was hard to connect them with how they’d looked earlier that evening.

Bai Chen crouched in front of one of them and lifted his eyelid. Deep in the man’s pupil, he saw a heart flickering.

“So they really were being controlled by a monster...”

A police officer heard Bai Chen muttering to himself and quietly asked:

“Can you figure out what’s going on?”

The police station had already received several complaints about the men running around naked after the rain.

Bai Chen nodded slightly and patted one of them on the cheek.

“Hey. Who told you to do this?”

“Ah... Master’s orders. Must... carry them out...”

“Who’s your master?”

“Carry out... the orders...”

“What orders?”

“Orders are... orders.” As he spoke, the pervert even tried to run around naked again, though his handcuffed wrists kept him from standing up.

There was no way to have a proper conversation with him.

“This looks pretty serious.”

Bai Chen stood up and turned to the officers.

“These guys are innocent victims who were attacked by a monster. Just leave them to the branch to handle.”

After giving them his instructions, Bai Chen headed home under the moonlight. He’d rushed all the way out here, and all he had to show for it was eyes that had been thoroughly scarred, plus mud-soaked pants and shoes.

Back home, Bai Chen still couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d seen. He scratched his head hard.

Get out of my head! Don’t show up in my dreams tonight!

They probably wouldn’t be convicted of anything, but they’d have a hard time showing their faces in Wind Chime City again.

Serves them right. They’d done plenty of awful things, and they’d even tried to harass an innocent girl. You could say I was doing the public a service...

Wait. An innocent girl?

Bai Chen stopped on his way to the washroom with his shoes in hand. The girl’s face came to mind.

Was it a coincidence?

They’d run into a monster after harassing Mo Qiu. Was it just bad luck?

Or was there another reason?

His colleague’s words echoed in his mind again. His dark eyes were deep as a whirlpool.

Even if Bai Chen was willing to believe she was innocent, this coincidence was just...

“What’s that girl named Mo Qiu doing right now?”

Bai Chen thought about it for a while, then shook the idea from his head. Cleaning his shoes was more important.

Besides, there was no way she was humming softly while thinking about me.

On the other side of Wind Chime City, in a certain apartment building.

After a soft, alluring hum, the girl licked her slightly dry lips.

“Bai Chen, are you thinking about me too?”

The air was rich with the scent of peaches. The black-haired girl lay sprawled on the bed, looking utterly drained after all that exertion. Her face, already pale as a doll’s, looked even more exhausted.

The sounds of the street outside had grown distant, and the ceiling light seemed painfully bright.

After three experiments, she’d noticed something strange.

Why do I think of Bai Chen at a time like this?

The more she thought about it, the more curious she became. And the more curious she got, the more she wanted to uncover the truth. By the time she came to her senses, she was nearly worn out.

The bed was damp, and her throat was a little sore. Her fingers, which had done most of the work, were aching too. She probably couldn’t even hold chopsticks properly.

Even so, Mo Qiu still hadn’t figured out the answer.

“Did Bai Chen see through my disguise and put some weird illusion on me?”

She quickly dismissed the idea. Mo Qiu considered her disguise and acting flawless. The most important part of deception was knowing how to lie.

With Bai Chen’s little-virgin way of thinking, he could rack his brains all day and still never suspect me.

Mo Qiu sat up and looked at the damp bedding. She still hadn’t gotten the result she wanted.

“Is there really no way to keep the bed dry?”

Looking at her fingers, which still hadn’t dried, Mo Qiu suddenly came to her senses.

“Wait, what am I doing? This experiment has nothing to do with the plan.”

Somehow, she’d lost herself in a pleasure-filled spiral.

So this kind of thing could be that intense? It didn’t just turn your brain to mush—it took a lot out of you, too.

Mo Qiu thought of the social butterflies she’d met in her previous life. They were good at seducing people and could still keep their minds working at full speed. Back then, she’d looked down on them. The lies they told with their bodies were nothing compared to hers.

Women are terrifying!

No, this couldn’t happen again. She quickly put on her pants and tossed her underwear into a washbasin in the bathroom.

Ding-dong~

“Hello! Delivery!”

Mo Qiu got out of bed and dragged her tired body to the door to accept the package.

“Of all times...”

She opened the package and took out the large device that had arrived in discreet packaging. Her blank eyes showed no reaction.

She pressed the switch. Feeling it vibrate in her palm, she raised an eyebrow slightly.

“This seems to work a lot faster than my hand.”

Mo Qiu stared at the device in her hand as she slowly walked back to the bed. She glanced down at herself. The bedding was still damp, and her fingertips felt cool against her skin.

Mo Qiu took a deep breath and made up her mind.

“Just once. It’s the weekend tomorrow, anyway.”

She silently swore that after this, she’d take a shower and go to sleep. If she didn’t let her body recover, she wouldn’t be able to keep carrying out her plan.

Yeah, this still doesn’t go beyond the scope of my plan.

Thinking that, the girl lay back down and pulled up the hem of her shirt.

Her sluggish brain came up with a profound question: wait, what number time is this?
