Aileen seemed happy as she left the hospital. Humming a little tune, she carried Liao Luo without even seeming tired and climbed right into the car.
They were probably going to buy pet supplies this time.
Well, as much as he hated to accept it, Liao Luo had to admit one thing: in this world, he was a pet human.
Actually, pet humans were the only kind of pet in this world. But so many people had been neutered that there weren’t many pet humans around…
He could tell from the astonished looks of the beast-eared girls they passed on the street.
“But if there are so few of us, why did I still get beaten up yesterday?! Honestly, brats are brats—even if they have cat ears!”
Liao Luo couldn’t help muttering to himself about it.
By the time they reached the pet-human shop, he hadn’t seen many people, but there were beast-eared girls everywhere.
With a customer like him in the shop, they were practically the center of attention. Three or four beast-eared girls rushed over to help them at once.
Naturally, they couldn’t help taking a few extra looks at him, either.
“There really is a Human!”
“He’s so cute! He won’t bite cats, will he?”
The enthusiastic employees took Liao Luo from Aileen, then eagerly ran their little hands through his hair, petting him for quite a while.
Their attitude was completely different from what Liao Luo had experienced yesterday.
It was practically heaven.
Liao Luo quickly decided to accept it.
This actually felt pretty nice!
A dog-eared girl eagerly recommended a bed to Aileen. “Would you like to buy a bed? This mattress is the best. Everyone loves sleeping on it!”
Aileen waved her off. “No need! My human sleeps with me.”
Liao Luo lifted his head a little.
Isn’t that a bit inappropriate…
Ah, whatever. It’s great.
Another girl, this one with cat ears, recommended some food. “Want to try this instant noodle brand? It’s packed with nutrients, and all Humans—from babies to adults—love it!”
Liao Luo was filled with respect.
Even babies eat instant noodles?
But Aileen still turned her down, shaking her hands and tail so fast they were a blur. “I can’t do that! I read online that if you want to bond with a human, the best thing is to make their food yourself. Instant noodles just won’t do!”
After recommending all those things, she didn’t buy a single one.
Though their sales pitch had gone nowhere, Liao Luo noticed that the employees didn’t seem annoyed at being turned down. It was almost as if they didn’t earn commission.
And before long, the employees had joined the crowd petting Liao Luo.
A little scratch here, a pat on the head there—it felt pretty nice.
After a quick look around, they left without a mattress or instant noodles, but bought lots of toilet paper and some emergency medicine.
Most importantly, Liao Luo noticed that Aileen had bought a wristband. She came over and fastened it around his wrist herself.
“There! With this, everyone will know you have a cat owner. They won’t mistake you for a stray human and bully you anymore!” Aileen stroked Liao Luo’s hair as she explained. “There may not be many Humans, but stray humans are scary. They attack animals, and they carry all kinds of germs and parasites. If one gets found, they’ll be driven away—or even sent to a shelter for humane disposal.”
Liao Luo clamped his legs together at once.
Humane disposal…
That couldn’t mean what he thought it meant, could it?
Thank goodness he hadn’t run into anything like that yesterday.
The big shopping trip was over. As they left the store, the employees looked a little reluctant to see them go.
The reason wasn’t complicated: hardly anyone had been coming into the shop lately. Of course, seeing even one customer now and then felt special.
Besides, Liao Luo didn’t think of himself as a pet at all. He could calmly accept their affection, but he’d still resist if they tried anything out of the ordinary.
That independent, catlike attitude—like a cat from another world—was naturally something people found appealing.
At last, they were home again. He’d only been away for one morning, but it felt like years had passed.
Aileen casually dumped all the odds and ends onto the sofa. Before Liao Luo could react, she picked him up and carried him into another room.
“Take a look around. You’ll be living here from now on. This is the bedroom. See? The bed’s huge. I’ll sleep on this side, and you can sleep on that one.”
She even patted the mattress, leaving a dip that looked wonderfully soft.
The sunlight seemed a little too bright, so she drew the curtains.
Liao Luo glanced at her and realized that, just like a cat’s, her eyes visibly changed with the light.
And then…
Liao Luo was stunned.
After she drew the curtains, her eyes really started glowing!!
So cat-eared girls could see in the dark, just like cats?!
“Oh, is it too dark? I forgot—Humans can’t see in places that are too dark.”
She apologized and opened the blackout curtains, leaving only the sun-blocking layer closed.
“Oh, right! I forgot to buy you clothes! You need lots and lots of cute outfits. Geez, I don’t feel like doing anything else today, meow. I’ll try again tomorrow.”
Once again, she carried Liao Luo into another room.
“The bathroom… I don’t know if you can use the toilet by yourself. If you can’t, I’ll teach you later.”
“The living room. This side is the dining area—they’re all one space since this is such a small place. The kitchen is over there, where there’s no partition. But good kids don’t mess with the cat grass!”
Liao Luo silently rolled his eyes.
Of course he wouldn’t touch it. He didn’t eat cat grass.
The house wasn’t very big, but she still gave Liao Luo a careful tour before finally setting him down.
“Now we’re going to live together! I need to think of a name for you… How about Renren?”
Aileen lifted Liao Luo up like a monkey holding up the Lion King.
But Liao Luo was utterly despairing over that name.
For a moment, he finally understood how cats named ‘Meow-Meow’ and ‘**’ must feel.
What the hell kind of name was that?!
Aileen said it to herself twice, then decided it didn’t sound quite right either.
“Renren sounds kind of weird. Then… Leilei? Leilei? L, le, Luo… Luoluo! How about that? It sounds like a name a Human should have!”
Liao Luo was so moved he could have cried.
It was a lot better than something like Renren or Leilei, and it didn’t sound strange to him, either!
“Yeah, yeah, that one,” Liao Luo said. “That’s pretty good!”
“You reacted! You really like it, don’t you? That must be it! Heehee, hehe, hahaha, hohoho, hahaha…”
She got excited all at once and rolled around on the bed with Liao Luo in her arms. Then, before long, she lifted him up again.
“Then it’s settled. From now on, your name is Luo Luo. You have to be a good boy and behave. Don’t act like a cat, or I won’t like you anymore!”
After giving him her very serious instructions, she finally set him down, perfectly satisfied. Then she picked up her phone and snapped a photo.
The first day of raising a Human.
So happy!
