Yan Zimo and the others arrived at an interrogation room. The person leading them suggested that Yan Zimo and Ye Qianxue be questioned separately.
Yan Zimo shot the security captain a look that said, “You handle it,” then led Ye Qianxue into an interrogation room.
The security captain had no choice but to let the two of them go in together. He even sent the female officer from earlier in to take their statements.
“Hey! Why’d you pick me?”
“You’re both women, so you’ll get along better! No more complaining—go!”
Of course, that was only one reason. The main thing was that he was afraid the single guys on his team would see such a beautiful pair and be too tongue-tied to get a word out. And if they did anything to upset Yan Zimo, that’d be a real pain to deal with.
Back on the other side, our protagonist, Yan Zimo, was helping Ye Qianxue into the interrogation room. Ye Qianxue, meanwhile, was clinging to her and refusing to let go.
This little rascal was still pretending! It’d been five minutes since they got out of the car. Yan Zimo refused to believe she still hadn’t recovered. Quick-witted as she was, she’d realized Ye Qianxue was taking advantage of her again. But what could she do? She couldn’t exactly push her away, could she?
Suddenly, Yan Zimo came up with a brilliant idea!
“Sleepyhead, if you don’t get up soon, I’m going to have to use special measures~”
Ye Qianxue’s body trembled. Yan Zimo’s words seemed to have startled her.
Ye Qianxue still showed no sign of getting up. Looks like she was planning to stay right there all day.
Yan Zimo gave her a wicked little smile. She placed a hand on Ye Qianxue’s chest, gave it a firm squeeze, then rubbed it.
“Ah!” Yan Zimo’s sudden attack startled Ye Qianxue into springing upright.
“That’s what you get for pretending. Have you learned your lesson?”
“I have...”
Tears glimmered at the corners of Ye Qianxue’s eyes, giving her a pitiful, fragile look.
“Um... can we start taking your statements now?”
A woman’s voice came from behind them.
Yan Zimo jumped. Had the woman seen what she’d just done?
Still, it was fine if another woman had seen. Yan Zimo didn’t mind. But if a man had seen... well, she’d just have to silence him.
The female officer shivered and wondered if she was coming down with a cold. Completely unaware, she had no idea she’d just narrowly escaped disaster.
“My surname is Bai. My name’s Bai Xiaoling. You can call me Officer Bai.”
“All right, Little Bai.”
“I said Officer Bai!”
“All right, Little Bai.”
Yan Zimo thought the policewoman was pretty funny. She could sense something familiar in Bai Xiaoling’s manner, so she teased her a little. If Yan Zimo knew Bai Xiaoling liked girls too, would she be even happier?
Maybe that was what they meant by kindred spirits being drawn to each other.
Bai Xiaoling had run out of energy to argue. She could only let Yan Zimo call her whatever she wanted.
“So, could you briefly explain what happened to you today?”
“Sure. We were just out shopping today...”
Yan Zimo rattled off the story for five minutes. Once Bai Xiaoling understood what had happened, she looked troubled.
“Is something wrong?”
Yan Zimo noticed Bai Xiaoling seemed hesitant, so she urged her to speak freely.
“No, it’s nothing. It’s just that the person who picked a fight with you today seems to be the son of the commander-in-chief of the eastern wall. This might be a little difficult to deal with.”
“The commander-in-chief? That’s quite a powerful background.” Yan Zimo sounded polite, but inwardly she couldn’t care less. The commander-in-chief of the eastern wall? She knew someone with an even higher rank. What did she have to be afraid of?
“Don’t worry about that. Leave this to me.”
After speaking, Yan Zimo took out her phone, tapped the screen a few times, and called a number.
“Sorry, Little Bai. Could you step outside for a moment?”
Bai Xiaoling had no choice but to leave the interrogation room and wait for Yan Zimo to finish her call.
“Hello? Is that you, Xiaomo?” A solemn voice came through, powerful and resonant. It was the voice of a peerless powerhouse who’d crawled out of mountains of corpses.
“Yes, Uncle. It’s me. I need to ask you for a favor.”
Yan Zimo felt a little nervous too. She’d been raised in this uncle’s home since she was little—in all but name, he was her adoptive father. He’d left a deep impression on her from childhood, and his naturally commanding presence always made her tense up without meaning to. He was also one of the few people who knew she’d become a girl.
After she explained what had happened, the only reply from the other end of the phone was, “All right! I’ll take care of it. And remember, come visit more often when you have time.”
At those words, tears shimmered faintly in Yan Zimo’s eyes, and her body began to tremble even harder.
“Okay. I’ll come back and visit after I finish this mission.”
“I’ll be waiting!” With that, he hung up first.
“Big Sis, how’s your uncle doing?” Ye Qianxue, who’d been standing silently off to the side like a piece of wood, couldn’t help asking.
“Don’t worry. The old man’s still in great shape!”
It was nothing more than an attempt to reassure herself.
Uncle was getting old, too. A trace of sadness welled up in Yan Zimo’s heart.
Ever since she’d become a girl, she’d been too embarrassed to go back. They’d only kept in touch by phone. She was afraid her uncle wouldn’t accept who she was.
Right after the apocalypse began, her uncle’s only son was killed by a mutant creature. Five years had passed since then. On the battlefield against the mutants, her uncle had only grown more valiant. He’d led his army to repel several large-scale mutant attacks, and his subordinates often called him the “Mighty General.” Yet even he had let his longing for family show during that phone call.
After composing herself, Yan Zimo called Bai Xiaoling back inside.
“Why are your eyes a little red? Have you been crying?” Bai Xiaoling could tell at a glance that Yan Zimo was upset.
Yan Zimo sighed. “It’s nothing. Let’s get back to what we were discussing.”
That was what she said, but there wasn’t much else to discuss. The facts were already clear, and Bai Xiaoling couldn’t keep them there any longer, so she agreed to let Yan Zimo and Ye Qianxue leave.
“Wait. There’s one more thing I’d like to ask you...” Bai Xiaoling’s voice began to falter.
“Go ahead, Little Bai. Just don’t ask anything too private.”
Bai Xiaoling stammered for a while before asking a question that nearly made Yan Zimo spit out her food. “You and Miss Qianxue... are you two that kind of couple?”
Uh, how was she supposed to answer that? Yan Zimo looked terribly awkward. They were... a girl-on-girl thing? How could she say that out loud?
Ye Qianxue cut in from beside her. “That’s right! Big Sis and I are practically skin-to-skin!”
Yan Zimo wanted to sew Ye Qianxue’s mouth shut. How could she blurt out something so private? Since she wasn’t good at lying, Yan Zimo could only nod in confirmation.
After getting a clear answer, Bai Xiaoling blushed. She pressed on, “So... how do you get that close to a girl you like? A-a girl, I mean?”
Bai Xiaoling’s voice grew quieter and quieter, until it was almost inaudible.
“Ooh! Then let me teach you!” Ye Qianxue was thrilled to meet a kindred spirit. She cheerfully offered to stay and teach Bai Xiaoling a few tricks.
Yan Zimo gave her a helpless look and could only pray that Bai Xiaoling wouldn’t be led astray.
