2. A War of Faith Between Two Goddesses

Of course Nolan was furious about losing to Astetaya!

A God-King who couldn’t beat him, yet had billions of followers whose faith she could squander at will, came to the bleak, deserted Chaos Throne every day just to sneer at him to his face!

Anyone would be furious!

But so far, everything was going according to Nolan’s plan.

Self-exile had cost him only his powerful, invincible body. The Supreme Godhead wasn’t so easy to extinguish—that was why the gods of the planes could never truly die.

As long as the Chaos Brand remained, most of his powers were still unobstructed. Otherwise, how was he supposed to make people submit through “virtue” (violence) and “persuasion” (force)?

Drowning in a fishpond? Not a chance~

He’d gotten away from that lovely yet infuriating face, and used the warped flow of time between the Supreme Divine Court and the lesser planes to pull a clever little trick. Now the Chaos God King had plenty of time on his hands.

The dopey God-King wasn’t exactly a genius, but she wasn’t stupid either. It didn’t take her long to settle on a starting point for her new life.

Iseran, a fairly prosperous lesser plane.

The brutal Godslayer, who had once stood at the very peak of the Divine Court, didn’t bother choosing a vessel. After all, he’d volunteered to start over from the bottom and rebuild his public image. The vessel carrying his will to spread the tenets of Chaos wasn’t all that important.

A meek, incompetent coachman and his kind, gentle wife. These were the suitable couple Nolan had chosen.

A lowly household meant no constraints. Freedom was the essence of chaos.

For a god, a decade or two passed in the blink of an eye. Nolan had plenty of time to prepare thoroughly for his conquest of the plane.

This time, he’d be gentler. He absolutely wouldn’t slaughter dozens of rulers of Prime Planes like last time and earn a terrifying reputation. He’d make sure those ignorant mortals understood just how powerful and benevolent he was in every way!

A meteor of interwoven red and black fell from the sky, streaking across the continent’s night.

Nolan didn’t realize that his intended course had quietly veered off track. He landed in the arms of the duchess, who was giving birth in the manor that very same day.

The dopey God-King had a vague sense that something was wrong. But things had already come to this, and he couldn’t bring himself to torment the poor woman any further while she was in such agony.

Well, at least he wouldn’t have to worry about startup funds. Nolan sighed softly.

The baby came into the world wailing. After breathing the lesser plane’s murky air for the first time in ages, she gave a token cry to show she was perfectly normal, then shut her eyes and couldn’t be bothered to speak.

But one remark from the cute little maid holding her made the Chaos God King’s eyes fly open again.

“My lord, it’s another... girl.”

The tall shadow by the window had been about to approach. At those words, it froze halfway, clenched its fists, then turned and strode away.

The maid’s hands trembled slightly, as if she feared punishment. Only the beautiful, exhausted woman on the bed gazed lovingly at her second child.

At that moment, nothing happening in the lavish room could compare to the turmoil inside Nolan!

The Brand, now fully fused into his body, nearly erupted in Chaos Flame and burned the entire plane to ashes.

!@#$...&*

One curse after another came out of the baby’s mouth as a string of shrill cries.

Nolan took a deep breath and began to console himself.

Calm down. Maybe it’s just so tiny the naked eye can’t see it.

Mm. A little is better than nothing. Heh. Heh heh...

Nolan struggled to sit up, looked down, and fumbled around a couple of times before passing out.

Three days later, the vacant-eyed baby in the cradle drooled as she stared at the ceiling, utterly bereft of hope.

Nolan broke down and accepted the truth: he really had become a girl, and had to take on the identity of the Joestar Duke’s second daughter.

He couldn’t have made a mistake. So it didn’t take a genius to figure out someone had tampered with things. Astetaya was the only one who could have twisted the laws of causality in the lesser plane!

Nolan had considered using this tiny body to cross countless battlefields between planes and go back to settle the score with Astetaya right away.

But that would mean admitting defeat and meekly becoming the Goddess of the Seven Luminaries’ divine consort.

Who knew what kind of bizarre thing that was!

And he’d just burned up his immortal divine body. Breaking free again would severely damage his will’s hold on his godhead...

“Let’s call him Nolan.”

The duchess gently played with her dazed daughter. A mental suggestion made her say that name as if by some strange compulsion.

Thanks to the duchess’s fine bloodline, Second Joestar had grown into an adorable little girl by the age of three.

Aside from often looking down at her own legs and sighing, the gloomy second daughter of the Joestar family seemed to have no other problems.

Rather than being obedient and well-behaved, she simply preferred to daydream and talk to herself, doing nothing else.

Someone had finally stopped dwelling on the past and learned to endure humiliation with patience, steadily building up her plan to recruit more followers.

The future Beautiful Goddess-King was truly determined to win that bet. When the time came, she’d do everything she could to torment and torture that arrogant goddess!

Her nominal mother became pregnant again that spring.

Nolan only had to glance once to know that, besides her eldest sister—who’d made a name for herself on the battlefields between planes at a young age—she was getting another little sister.

That day, the much older duke stood before an oil painting and said to his ailing wife in their room, “Our child will inherit my position in the Holy Alliance and plant the Golden Broom Empire’s banner at the very peak of the battlefield between planes!”

“But she’s a...”

At the time, the duchess still didn’t understand what he meant.

“I said our child is a boy!”

The Joestar Duke’s eyes were dark, his voice firm as a verdict.

The duchess was stunned.

Their eldest daughter was exceptionally skilled in martial arts and would have been a good choice, but she was already engaged and would have to marry sooner or later.

Now, another hope had fallen through. At his age, the duke couldn’t wait for another chance—or risk another disappointment.

So the burden of inheriting his glory could only fall to Nolan.

Her husband couldn’t accept having no heir, so he planned to raise his second daughter to become the Duke of Morningstar City!?

In exchange, Nolan would spend her days rolling around in the mud at the training grounds, lose the childhood every child deserved, and even be stripped of a girl’s dignity.

“She’ll hate you for the rest of her life!”

“I don’t care.”

The Joestar Duke had already endured the nobles of the imperial capital mocking him for having no male heir. He wasn’t afraid of a few more jeers. He stubbornly decided the dopey God-King’s future all on his own.

From then on, Nolan said goodbye to pretty dresses and dolls. Everything she disliked vanished from her life.

Unexpectedly, the usually quiet second daughter didn’t resist at all. She even became more lively, and doted on the little sister who had saved her from misery.

It was the one and only time the stubborn, rigid duke felt pleased with the fool who usually did nothing but daydream.

Whatever the case, Nolan wasn’t troubled by absorbing Soul Spirits to temper her delicate body, or by wearing heavy armor and training with a bunch of boys.

These daily indignities, which made the duchess secretly wipe away her tears, were nothing compared to using the toilet or taking a bath.

While playing house with this bunch of mortals, Little Nolan didn’t forget her real goal.

One day, an article in a Morningstar City newspaper caught her attention.

The Holy Maiden of the Seven Luminaries Temple had once again returned in triumph with the Holy Alliance. The article was exaggerated from start to finish. It was obvious the newspaper, owned by the Free Federation, had received a hefty payment from the church.

That pretty girl hadn’t done a thing. She’d merely chanted a few healing spells and offered a few prayers, yet she credited the soldiers’ hard-won victory to the goddess’s favor.

War had always been the best way to harvest faith. Fortunately, the Seven Luminaries Temple in the lesser plane of Iseran was still in its infancy.

“Wait...”

A sudden inspiration struck Nolan, and a brilliant plan was born.

Religious charlatans never reach out and grab you directly. They always turn into beautiful angels to lure you ever deeper—or perhaps they’re devils instead?

To the Lord of Chaos, those otherworldly Holy Maidens were just a pack of frauds selling one thing while delivering another. They raked in faith by the bucketful, while their divine blessings barely amounted to anything.

That was clearly false advertising!

If the elemental Holy Maidens of the Seven Luminaries Temple were all mighty Battle Maidens, then the Chaos Throne’s poster girls would be War Witches who sold the power of destruction.

Chaste, devout Holy Maidens weren’t necessarily more popular than Witches who believed in an order built on chaos.

The dopey God-King, staking her pride on this, changed careers and became a talent manager. She began searching for the first promising recruit for her Witch Idol project, never realizing that she herself was the perfect candidate.

No, one wasn’t enough. She’d form a whole group and make an official debut—that was the best way to attract the widest range of followers!

And so, the war between the two goddesses began...
