“I know...”
Su Wei still felt a little unreal about it.
After all, in her previous life, she’d been completely ordinary. She’d never known what it felt like to be a genius. Now she suddenly had a talent that was practically a superpower, and she still wasn’t used to it. She stayed excited the entire night. By the time class started the next day, she was still groggy.
For computer engineering, the first class was held in the computer lab. There weren’t many girls in the class, but maybe to act gentlemanly, the first two rows were almost entirely taken by them. Su Wei had come here to study. Now that her dick was gone, her heart was pure and her desires few. She didn’t care about anything else. She just wanted to study hard and make big money.
So during class, she was extremely focused. Her classmates also treasured the chance to study at the highest institution of learning, so nobody was on their phone or chatting idly. It was just that she’d gone to bed way too late last night, so Su Wei would zone out from time to time. And because she was pretty, the teacher noticed her more often. Seeing how drowsy she looked, the teacher was a little displeased.
“Su Wei.”
“Ah? Yes, teacher.”
“Come answer this question.”
Su Wei looked at the multiple-choice question on the computer screen she was controlling and answered without hesitation, “This one should be A.”
The teacher raised a brow. He’d planned to use this question as an example. It was only a test question, but it covered a basic issue they’d run into often in future work, and one people could easily get wrong. He hadn’t even taught it yet.
Still, at a top-tier school like this, self-study or getting ahead with tutoring was perfectly normal. So the teacher lightly told Su Wei to sit down and commented in an even tone,
“Even if you know it, you still can’t lose focus. Listen carefully. What seems simple now might not be simple for you in the future.”
“Got it.”
Su Wei didn’t dare argue. She forced herself to focus and stared seriously at the computer screen, but after a while her eyes started to droop again. The girl beside her glanced at Su Wei and silently handed over something that looked like lip balm. Su Wei blinked in confusion, not knowing what it was for. Seeing her blank look, the girl demonstrated.
She twisted the “lip balm” open, held it under her nose, and took a sniff. She instantly shivered.
Su Wei immediately understood. She took the mint inhaler, drew in a deep breath, and the strong minty chill hit her like a bucket of ice water poured from head to toe. She woke up on the spot, shot the girl a grateful look, and kept listening attentively.
A university class lasted ninety minutes straight, with no break in the middle. If you needed the bathroom, you could just go. But the teacher wouldn’t wait for you, so basically nobody went unless they had to.
This class was covering fundamentals, but because this was the best institution in the world, the teacher spent most of the time talking about practical cases and applications. A lot of people who still weren’t familiar with the material found it exhausting to follow, but Su Wei listened with full concentration. The ninety minutes flew by. After class, she even had the urge to write a small program herself.
“Thanks for that thing just now...”
Su Wei gave the girl beside her a bright smile. Looking closely, the girl was pretty too. Bright eyes, fair skin, a high nose bridge, and two little dimples that appeared when she smiled. She had the warm, approachable feel of the girl next door.
“Hehe~ don’t mention it. Were you up too late previewing the material last night?”
“Ah, pretty much.”
Su Wei nodded. She couldn’t exactly say she’d been too excited to sleep because she’d discovered she was a genius.
“Honestly, same. I just couldn’t fall asleep last night no matter what. Half excitement, half nerves. Half longing, half fear. You know, I’m not from Grand Zhou. To get into this school, I repeated the exam for three years. My family’s already taken on a lot of debt because of me. If I got expelled, oh god... I can’t even imagine it.”
The girl seemed like a chatterbox. She kept talking to Su Wei without pause. Su Wei was too embarrassed to interrupt, so she could only keep nodding awkwardly.
People always said college was for having fun. What bullshit. If you wanted to rise above the crowd, when was life ever easy? If you played through college, then you’d just have to fight like hell after graduation.
Su Wei had a full schedule the entire day. It wasn’t until eight-thirty that night that she dragged her exhausted body back to the dorm.
Zhou Xi was sitting on the little sofa, one foot planted on it, eating snacks and watching a movie at the same time. She looked completely unkempt. In the past, Su Wei definitely would’ve roasted her for it. But right now, Su Wei didn’t have the energy. She didn’t even take off her clothes or change her shoes. She just flopped face-first onto the bed.
“Ah... I’m dead tired.”
Zhou Xi turned and glanced at her. “What were you doing today? I didn’t see you all day. If you hadn’t replied to my voice transmission, I would’ve thought you’d gone missing.”
“I had class! A whole day of class!”
Su Wei looked half-dead. “Computer fundamentals and programming languages in the morning. Advanced math and program design theory in the afternoon. Intro to computer science and fundamentals of program design at night. I’ve been completely drained!”
“But you had breaks, right? Why didn’t I see you at noon either?”
“When would I have time for that? The second I had any free time, I was previewing or reviewing. My head’s about to explode.”
“No way, sis. Even if you’re a genius, you can’t torture yourself like this.”
Zhou Xi frowned at her. “This won’t work. Sooner or later, you’re gonna get sick. Then you’ll just delay everything.”
“It’s fine.”
Su Wei pushed herself up with both hands, turned around, and sat on the bed. “By now, I’ve already memorized all of Computer Fundamentals and Programming Languages. I’m pretty sure it won’t even take a week before I self-study this whole semester’s coursework. Once that’s done, I’ll have it easy.”
“Heh. Then you’ll just start previewing the second semester of freshman year.”
“That actually makes sense!”
“Makes sense my ass!”
Pouting, Zhou Xi marched over and knocked Su Wei on the head. “You’re obviously so smart, so why are you still working this hard?”
“Smart?”
Su Wei smiled and shook her head. “There are plenty of smart people in this world. But how many truly succeed and become great scientists, politicians, or businessmen remembered by history? IQ decides your ceiling. Effort decides your floor. Like they say, if you don’t work hard when you’re young, you’ll only regret it when you’re old.”
Zhou Xi was instantly speechless.
She’d heard this kind of grand principle since childhood. By all rights, she should’ve been sick of it by now. But for some reason, hearing it from Su Wei felt like a sudden awakening. The egg tart in her mouth turned bland. Even the movie on her laptop suddenly became boring.
She quietly went back to the sofa and shut the laptop. Then she dragged a suitcase out from under the bed, took out a thick book, set it on the desk, and started reading.
Su Wei was a little surprised. She’d only known this roommate for a few days, but she already understood her temperament well. This girl absolutely hated studying. Every day, all she did was play. She’d rather sit around drinking tea and staring at the scenery out of sheer boredom than read a book. As for her love of poetry, that was probably something forced into her since childhood, not her own interest at all. And now she was actually reading on her own? The sun must’ve risen in the west.
Su Wei got up and walked over to Zhou Xi, then glanced at the book in her hands.
And the moment she did, she couldn’t help rolling her eyes.
This wasn’t a textbook at all. It had nothing to do with quantum engineering, at least. The cover said Ancient Tales. For all she knew, it was just a novel.
“What are you even reading? I thought you were studying.”
“I am studying!”
Zhou Xi turned around and answered with obvious dissatisfaction, “This is The Emperor’s Mindcraft. It’s way harder than your computer engineering stuff.”
“The Emperor’s Mindcraft—pfft!”
Su Wei burst out laughing. She walked to the window, pulled the curtains shut, and started getting ready to undress for a shower. “Alright then, Your Majesty the Empress. Please take your time studying your Emperor’s Mindcraft. This humble servant is going to bathe.”
“Go on, my beloved consort.”
