"Why did she leave? Did she get mad?"
Crimson Robe drifted out of the electrotherapy room and didn't come back for a long while. Dr Chen really couldn't wait anymore. He forced himself to step outside and peek down the hall. The corridor was dim and silent. There wasn't a trace of red anywhere.
"If she was mad, shouldn't she want to kill me even more? Whatever. As long as I stay alive, that's all that matters."
After waiting a bit longer, Dr Chen still didn't know if Crimson Robe would return. He picked up the wrench and hammer lying off to the side. Then his eyes landed on the electrotherapy device beside the ghost doctor's corpse.
"This thing..." The moment Dr Chen picked up the iron hoop from the machine, his phone vibrated.
[Congratulations. You have obtained a damaged electrotherapy device. It contains the pain and resentment of hundreds of patients...]
Dr Chen had no mood to read the item description. He scrolled straight to the bottom, to the usage instructions.
[It has strong killing power against a single ghost. Against stronger evil spirits, it can paralyze the target. The duration depends on the ghost's strength. Usage: place the electric coil around the ghost's body.]
Electric coil... that should mean the iron ring in Dr Chen's hand. And this counted as medical equipment? Just imagining this thing clamped onto someone's forehead and discharging electricity felt cruel. Of course, that didn't include proper electrotherapy devices.
"So this is like an elite mob dropping gear? Fine. From now on, I'll call you the Power of Yang Yongxin."
Dr Chen finally understood the point of exploring the electrotherapy room as a side quest. If he got this piece of equipment, the difficulty of this supernatural point in the mental hospital should drop by a lot.
Then he just had to go to the director's office and get the next item. After that, he could clear the final dungeon.
But from the very start, those people had gotten the order wrong. They skipped the electrotherapy room and went straight to the director's office. Then they headed for the most terrifying place of all, Ward No. 4.
They hadn't even gotten any weapon items. Wasn't that just asking to die?
"No idea if they made it out alive. Whatever... that's none of my business. I should get upstairs first."
Dr Chen felt there was no point waiting any longer. If Crimson Robe wanted to come back, she could find him no matter where he was. And if she had left him behind, then he had even less reason to stay. In a horror-filled mental hospital, standing still in one place was basically waiting for ghosts to come to you.
"So from here on out, I'm on my own?"
Without Crimson Robe protecting him, Dr Chen would have to face the Malevolent Ghosts and zombies in the hospital alone. He was extremely tense. The arm holding the hammer was trembling. It wasn't that he was scared of the ghosts themselves. He was just worried that without Crimson Robe's protection, he'd die. To put it simply, he was afraid of death.
The closer a person came to death, the more they understood what it meant to live. And just now, he had no idea how many times he had already crawled back from the edge of hell.
"The best way to get rid of fear is to face it! Come on!"
Dr Chen bit his lip. A certain famous quote echoed in his head. He gathered his courage and dragged his injured body out of the electrotherapy room.
The doors to the patient rooms on both sides of the corridor had all been opened on his way in. Dr Chen could only rely on the weak light from his phone as he slowly moved forward. When he reached the first room, he raised his phone and shined it inside.
"Ahhh!!!!"
A scream full of terror rang out. Dr Chen saw a figure hurriedly dive under the bed and vanish.
"Am I really that scary?"
The doors to more than a dozen rooms on both sides stood open. Inside were the ghosts of mentally ill patients. Dr Chen had thought he'd have to fight his way out with great difficulty. But to his surprise, not a single patient dared come out.
The light from his phone lit up this bloody path. At last, Dr Chen understood. The scary one wasn't him.
It was her.
Thanks to his wife, Dr Chen moved through the third floor without a single obstacle. He safely made it up the stairs to the fourth floor.
This floor was mostly offices and treatment rooms, so there were no patient wards in sight. As for the director's office, it was just up ahead.
The moment he came up, Dr Chen saw someone lying at the entrance to the office. The person wasn't wearing hospital clothes. When he got closer, he realized it was the poker-faced guy!
From what he remembered of the surveillance footage, that guy had stayed outside as lookout. Only Glasses Girl and that annoying brat had gone into the director's office. Left alone by himself, if the ghosts weren't going after him, who else would they go after?
His death wasn't especially gruesome. There was just a cut across his neck. He had bled out. His eyes were wide open, his face frozen in disbelief. But compared to Busty Girl and the tech nerd, this was already much better.
One had been strangled to death. The other had been electrocuted into charcoal.
"That makes three already."
With the poker-faced guy included, only half of the mission team was still alive. Dr Chen had no idea how the other two were doing. In any case, it didn't have much to do with him, so he didn't think about it too much.
Right now, all his attention was on the director's office. He was wondering whether he should go in. Glasses Girl and the others had already been here before. Maybe they had taken the item already. But... if they had died inside, then charging up to Ward No. 4 would just be suicide too.
"Kekeke..."
Just as Dr Chen stood in front of the director's office, frowning in thought, a strange sound suddenly came from the poker-faced guy's corpse behind him.
Those bulging eyes, still wide with rage, slowly turned.
Then they fixed themselves on Dr Chen.
