Chapter 10: The Ghost's Knock

"My bathroom... my house. What sin have I committed!" Dr. Chen stumbled out of the utterly wrecked bathroom, tears welling in his eyes. The Malevolent Ghost had vanished—no need to guess who was behind it.

Just like trespassing on a beast’s territory and getting driven off by its roar, that blast was only a warning. No real attack.

After all, he hadn’t seen the Crimson Robe use her hair, nor clash with the ghost in the toilet.

"Damn it, they actually sent a ghost?" Phone in hand, Dr. Chen suppressed the urge to curse. He tried sounding polite—but failed.

"Hehe, feeling our power yet? Just register for VIP and behave!"

"Hmph. Impressive? It ran off. I didn’t even see its face." True—aside from that pale, ghostly hand, Dr. Chen never glimpsed the spirit. Couldn’t even tell if it was scary.

"That was just... our weakest Malevolent Ghost. Next, we send a Level 3 Malevolent Ghost. Even *that woman* won’t save you."

"Go ahead. Send it." After a hesitation, Dr. Chen refused. He gambled: if their next ghost fled too, they had no real threats. He’d be safe.

Second outcome: stalemate. The Crimson Robe and their ghost destroy each other—but then the organization sends another. He’s doomed.

Third: the Crimson Robe gets wiped out instantly. And so does he.

Why not sign up? Gut said trap. Plus, he’d learned: feed the Crimson Robe a ghost now and then, and she wouldn’t kill him. At least... not yet.

Last night’s male ghost should buy him time. Later, he’d search haunted spots online. Feed ghosts to the Crimson Robe. Survive.

Only downside? Every night in his dreams, the Crimson Robe just... stared.

"Fine! You wait! One day, you’ll come begging!" Frustrated by Dr. Chen’s defiance, the voice snapped the threat—and went silent.

"I’ll wait."

Knock, knock, knock... Knock, knock, knock...

No sooner had Dr. Chen set down his phone than someone pounded on his rental door. Only delivery guys knew he lived here. Who was it?

"Who is it?"

Silence. Just relentless knocking.

Unable to take it, Dr. Chen shuffled to the door and peered through the peephole.

The dim hallway stood empty. Even the motion-sensor light stayed dark.

"Could it be..."

*Click.* The hallway light flickered on—revealing a rotting face pressed against the door! Inches away. Dr. Chen, just calming down, jolted backward in fresh terror.

"Mommy!" He stumbled half a step, crashed to the floor, and scrambled backward, legs kicking wildly.

Knock, knock, knock... The pounding never stopped.

"G-Ghost Sister! A ghost’s here! Aren’t you gonna do something?"

After nearly a minute of knocking, Dr. Chen realized: the Crimson Robe inside showed zero intent to act.

Later, he understood. She only moved against spirits trespassing *his* space with clear malice. Otherwise? She wouldn’t lift a finger—even if a ghost hammered the door all night.
