Jiang Qianyu didn’t need to think twice—her marriage to Lu Yunzhi was a classic flash marriage. No announcements, no banquet, nothing. They simply went straight to register, becoming legally wedded spouses.
It was pure “what’s done is done” and “act first, report later.” Lu Yunzhi’s parents only found out after she came home, marriage certificate in hand.
Naturally, one could imagine their fury and disappointment.
Especially since they’d been eager to see her married off—whether for a strategic alliance or to bring in a live-in son-in-law for a grandson. Lu Yunzhi’s actions were utterly unacceptable to them.
And Jiang Qianyu, the so-called culprit? In their eyes, she was little more than a piece of disgusting crap—ruining their daughter’s future, messing up her life.
Whether Lu Yunzhi initiated the marriage or not, Jiang Qianyu would bear the blame.
How could that old couple possibly treat her leg injury out of kindness?
They’d rather dig a hole and bury her, pretending she never existed.
Thankfully, since Jiang Qianyu was also a woman, Lu Yunzhi remained a virgin after a year and a half of marriage.
If they could just arrange a divorce, everything might still be negotiable.
The dream of a grandson could still come true.
For Lu Yunzhi, it wasn’t off the table either. She’d married solely to escape her family’s relentless marriage pressure and focus on her work as a Nightwatcher.
Maybe she’d already struck a deal with them.
As for why they hadn’t divorced outright—that came down to the body’s original owner.
She’d been hopelessly devoted to Lu Yunzhi, genuinely head over heels. Getting her to agree to divorce? Nearly impossible.
“Fine. Just tell me the time,” Jiang Qianyu replied without hesitation.
A sudden clarity washed over her.
Did identity really matter that much?
Even if Lu Yunzhi sensed something was off—so what?
Could she really guess Jiang Qianyu was a soul inhabiting another’s body that fast?
Her family would set conditions for the divorce. But conditions meant room to negotiate. Jiang Qianyu didn’t even need money—just this shop. Bare minimum for survival.
Admittedly, it was shameless. Despicable.
But reality stared her down.
After divorce, with nothing to her name… how could she support a child?
Staying married had its perks.
The only risk? Her identity being exposed.
“Huh?” Lu Yunzhi froze.
She never expected Jiang Qianyu to agree so readily. Before, she’d refuse ten times over.
“Xiao Yu, you…”
She clearly understood the complications. So why agree?
“I think the one who decides isn’t me,” Jiang Qianyu said with a subtle glance. She pushed her wheelchair toward the shop door. Lu Yunzhi followed silently.
Outside, Jiang Qianyu looked at her but said nothing.
Their relationship was complicated.
Not deeply intimate—almost transactional.
Yet they were married. Legally “spouses.”
“Yunzhi, honestly, none of this needs to be so tangled. It’s all negotiable. I can accept it. If you’re in trouble… just tell me. I’m here.”
Jiang Qianyu knew her place. She offered little value—emotional or otherwise. Yet Lu Yunzhi gave her tens of thousands monthly. She couldn’t blame her for quietly arranging things with family.
Lu Yunzhi fell silent.
Of course she understood.
She *had* agreed: Jiang Qianyu would visit once; her father would use his connections to resolve a matter.
If unresolved? She’d lose her Nightwatcher position for sure.
And she knew exactly what Jiang Qianyu would face there.
Her resolve was simple: no matter what her father said, she wouldn’t divorce Jiang Qianyu. That would be too cruel.
After a beat, Lu Yunzhi stepped behind her, smile returning, hands kneading Jiang Qianyu’s shoulders. “Oops, sorry, Xiao Yu. I’ve been swamped lately… really had no choice but to ask Dad for help.”
“Let’s not go back. What for? To endure their cold stares?”
“You’re right. Since we’ve been married this long, I should’ve talked to you first. Don’t be mad, okay?”
Jiang Qianyu sighed inwardly. She seriously suspected this girl’s brain was a single-core processor—only one thought at a time.
“Let me guess,” Jiang Qianyu said. “You’re stuck. The other side has power, holds leverage. You’re at a total disadvantage. Risking your job. Right?”
She couldn’t fathom Lu Yunzhi’s devotion to the Nightwatchers.
But knowing her? Only this identity was worth compromising family peace for.
Her father’s wealth mattered less than his position as director of a major hospital.
Money wasn’t Lu Yunzhi’s issue. It was connections. Authority.
“Huh? Did someone tell you?!” Lu Yunzhi blurted.
“No. You’re the only one I talk to.”
“Th-then… how?!”
“Just a guess.”
“Hmm… Xiao Yu, you’ve changed so much.” Lu Yunzhi didn’t deny it. She sighed. “You’re right. Simply put… my squad accidentally killed a powerful man’s son during a mission.”
“As a member, I’m squarely on his hit list.”
“He won’t kill me. But he can transfer me.”
“If I’m transferred, everything’s wasted. Besides… he’s no good person either.”
Her hands tightened unconsciously, kneading hard enough to sting.
“So, Miss Lu,” Jiang Qianyu asked gently, “besides your father… any other plan?”
“Yes!” Lu Yunzhi’s grip intensified. “If I advance from Class B Nightwatcher to Class A, he loses all authority over me.”
“And how?”
“Complete three Class A missions… or solo one.” Lu Yunzhi grimaced. “But like this? Absolutely impossible.”
