6 Lost Memories (Part One)

She was still saved.

When she woke up, she smelled that hospital disinfectant. She didn't know whether to feel sad or relieved.

"So you've got some nerve now? You dared to kill yourself?" That sharp voice rang out again.

Liang Sheng turned her head away. She thought, Why didn't I cut deeper? Then I wouldn't have to hear that grating voice anymore.

Zhao Xin suddenly burst into tears. She started slapping herself across the face. "How did I end up giving birth to such a troublesome child...?"

Liang Sheng felt awful too. After all, this was the mother who had given birth to her and raised her. Watching her hit herself like that naturally made her feel terrible.

"Promise Mom, okay? Don't do this kind of thing again, alright? Just follow the path I've planned for you. Go to school safely, get married, and you'll be happy. I'll be happy too." For the first time, Zhao Xin softened her tone. She held Liang Sheng's hand and cried as she spoke.

Liang Sheng was exhausted. She didn't even know what the point of everything she'd done since childhood had been. She always felt that everything about her was strange. To make people like her, she'd say one thing to one person and another to the next. Because of her father, she always kept men at arm's length, which led to her liking women. Her mother's unpredictable moods kept her in constant unease. Even walking down the street, she was always afraid someone might suddenly kill her, or that she'd die in some accident.

Every part of it was so strange, yet it had all happened to her. She wanted to break free from this absurd, miserable fate, but she had been born into a family like this.

If doing this would only make everyone around her suffer, then she just wouldn't do it. Anyway, she lived for other people, didn't she?

So let this memory be sealed away.

I am a normal person. I will keep obeying what is arranged for me. I'll go to college, work, get married, and have children.

Liang Sheng jolted awake. She found that she was already back in the dorm. Several girls were sitting by her bed, looking at her with worry. The moment they saw her wake up, Song An'an lost control of her tear ducts again. It was like the person on the bed had come back from the dead. She broke into loud sobs, crying so hard Liang Sheng's head started buzzing.

"You guys... can you let me rest for a bit?" Liang Sheng rubbed her temples, looking tired.

Song An'an still wanted to say something, but Gu Yuqi grabbed her by the hood and dragged her outside. "Let Liang Sheng rest by herself for a while. Don't bother her."

Gu Yuqi gave the person on the bed one worried look before leaving too.

Liang Sheng collapsed onto the bed. She had finally managed to forget that most unbearable memory, yet now she had remembered it again. Who would believe her if she said she didn't care anymore?

Well, whatever. She'd already transmigrated. Other than herself, no one knew anymore. Poor her, only in her early twenties and in the prime of youth, and she'd transmigrated into a book before she could accomplish anything big. Tragic, truly tragic!

"You... really transmigrated at twenty?"

A voice rang out without warning.

That one sentence scared Liang Sheng so badly her skin prickled. She shook her head and looked around. There was no one there.

No one. Had she heard wrong?

"Or rather, did you really transmigrate after finishing a bizarre novel like this and then going to sleep?"

"Who?" Liang Sheng pulled a knife out from under her pillow.

"Pfft. Did you forget? Or do you just not want to remember?" The voice carried a trace of mockery.

"Who?!" Liang Sheng's head swam in waves, and her voice turned shrill.

Suddenly, she felt gusts of cool air. "Come on. I'll show you everything you've forgotten."

The scene shifted.

In a high-end restaurant, Liang Sheng saw herself dressed in mature clothes and wearing mature makeup. The makeup was even a little deliberately heavy.

Beside her sat Zhao Xin, telling her something.

"You're already twenty-eight. Mom's doing this for your own good. That young man is a corporate executive. He's rich, owns a house, and he's handsome too." Zhao Xin had grown older, and even more nagging.

Twenty-eight? Why twenty-eight? Liang Sheng stared at everything in shock. Hadn't she transmigrated at twenty-three?

"See? I didn't lie to you. You just can't remember it." The voice sounded again. Liang Sheng felt her shoulder sink, as if something had pressed down on it.

"Keep watching," the voice ordered.

Liang Sheng hated being ordered around. She had just started to turn her head to snap back, when a force grabbed it and forcibly turned it toward that mature version of herself.

A distinguished-looking man slipped in through the restaurant entrance. He carried himself with grace and had handsome features, except... his hair looked a little greasy? Why was it shining like that?

The glare made Liang Sheng's eyes blur a little. She rubbed them before looking carefully again.

The man sat across from the older Liang Sheng, folded his hands, and began introducing himself. "My name is Jin Fugui. I'm thirty this year, and I'm an executive at a major company."

Well then. Aside from the greasy hair, even the name sounded tacky. How could Zhao Xin bear to introduce a man like this to her one precious daughter?

"Order," the man said to mature Liang Sheng with a brow waggle, then waved for food.

This Liang Sheng was instantly grossed out by that eyebrow move alone. She was sure the mature Liang Sheng sitting there already wanted to throw up.

A waiter walked over and accidentally brushed against Jin Fugui's hair. Both Liang Shengs stared in disbelief. The man's hair had shifted crookedly. It had all tilted to one side.

Liang Sheng watched as the man across the table calmly and unhurriedly adjusted his slanted hair back into place. The stunned mature Liang Sheng wore a standard professional fake smile, while ten thousand alpacas stampeded through her heart.

"Um... s-sir," mature Liang Sheng said.

"Hm?" Jin Fugui gave a wickedly charming smile. Both Liang Shengs got goosebumps all over. Holy crap, so greasy!

"I-I'm going to the restroom." Mature Liang Sheng stood up with an awkward smile.

"Heh~" The man curled his lips, radiating that idiotic domineering-CEO aura of, Woman, you've successfully caught my attention. "Go ahead, Miss Liang. You're really cute!" Liang Sheng felt wave after wave of nausea.

Mature Liang Sheng circled behind Jin Fugui. Her heart hardened, and she ruthlessly brushed shoulders with the man's hair.

That hair dropped to the floor like it was staging a scam, and this time it wasn't getting back up.

Mature Liang Sheng covered her mouth and pretended to be shocked. She pointed at the hair on the floor, then at Jin Fugui's brilliantly bald head.

But Jin Fugui wasn't flustered in the slightest. He calmly picked up the wig and put it back on. Then he turned around and gave mature Liang Sheng a smile that showed all eight teeth. It instantly reminded her of those toothpaste commercials always playing on TV.

Watching from the side, Liang Sheng couldn't help letting out a snort of laughter. Even though that helpless, flustered woman was herself, she still couldn't stop herself from laughing at her own misery.

"Remember now?" The voice came again. Compared to before, it sounded lighter now, even carrying a trace of delight, as if Liang Sheng laughing had made her happy too.

Liang Sheng thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No. I don't remember this at all."

"Sigh... then keep watching."
