“Mmm…”
The next morning, Luo Ling woke first. Stretching with a soft yawn, he let out an unexpectedly cute sound.
Realizing it, he clapped a hand over his mouth and shot a nervous glance at the other three beds—relieved to see his roommates still asleep.
*They probably didn’t hear… Making that noise with this tough-guy body? I’ll never live it down…*
After letting the embarrassment fade, Luo Ling got up. Though not his own bed, he’d slept well—refreshed, alert, no urge to snooze again. Time to brush teeth and wash up. Today held tasks: first, set up something on the library rooftop.
The original plan needed no setup—just pick a spot, spread rumors, and wait for prey to come. But after reading Mom’s magic notes yesterday, he’d revised his approach.
The notes described “Scrying Eye”: a spell revealing all movement within a hundred meters of the array, even granting vision inside its range. Mana could be sustained by components; swap them, and the array ran indefinitely. Basically, a magical surveillance cam—no wires, no hardware. Just brains.
Finished washing, Luo Ling slung his backpack on, hung his favorite headphones around his neck, and stepped out. Yesterday’s lack of soft earpad to fiddle with had left him uneasy—he’d *needed* to bring them today.
Skipping breakfast at the cafeteria, he bought supplies at the supermarket. Then, activating invisibility, he flew straight to the library rooftop in true form.
Confirming the iron door was shut, Ling Luo sighed in relief and dropped the invisibility. *Where to draw it?*
After circling the roof, she chose a spot near a cooling tower—hidden from the entrance. Perfect.
“Huff… let me check how to draw this.”
She set down her bag, pulled out the magic notes, flipped to “Scrying Eye,” and reviewed. Then she took out a tiny bottle of peanut oil and a small brush. To a passerby? Definitely looked like barbecue prep.
The notes said ideal ink was demonic beast grease. But this was the human realm—good luck finding one. Crude oil was the next best, yet hard to get. So… peanut oil it was.
Setting the notes aside, Ling Luo dipped the brush and began painting.
Humming softly:
“La la la~ La la la~”
Like a little girl doodling… or a tiny demon?
Halfway through, she paused.
*Wait… should I sing something more “manly”? Ah! This one!*
“The great river flows eastward~, stars follow the Big Dipper~…”
…Nah. Felt off. Switched to “Love Circulation.” *There.* *True* manly energy.
She drew a one-meter circle, then a slightly larger concentric ring. Inside, a square; at its center, a simple eye. Four tiny circles aligned with the square’s corners within the ring. Done.
“Ugh… peanut oil smells *so* strong… kinda hungry…”
Mana was still over 60%—no real hunger—but the scent teased her empty stomach. *Skipped breakfast, after all.*
“Mmm… hold on. Eat after finishing.”
She packed the brush, pulled out a pouch of pale yellow stones—amber, for mana—and placed one in each small circle. Checked the notes.
“Place one tear of a demon… on the eye symbol at the center.”
Easy to get the tear—she *was* a demon. Hard part? Making herself cry.
Punch herself with Fire Fist? Ouch, no.
Cry on command with zero context? Tough.
*Think sad thoughts…*
She recalled last month: collapsing from hunger into hibernation, locked in that mental “dark room.”
*Wahhh—!*
Tears flooded out, unstoppable.
Ten minutes later, sniffling, she nearly forgot the ritual.
Tear secured. Notes double-checked. Time for activation.
She whispered the incantation. A flame sparked at her fingertip—igniting the array.
Orange fire blazed across the circle. Fireballs flared where amber sat. At the center, an eerie blue glow pulsed.
A chuunibyou soul would’ve cheered. But Ling Luo’s attention snagged elsewhere—
“Ah… so *fragrant*…”
The burning oil’s aroma hit hard. Stomach growled. Drool threatened.
“What to eat…? Oh! Ready.”
*Snap.* Flames vanished.
Left behind: thick golden lines forming the array. Amber gone—replaced by strange glyphs in the four circles. The central eye now detailed, lifelike… almost blinking.
“Mmm, smooth. Test time.”
Eyes closed, she linked consciousness to the array. A spherical vision bloomed in her mind.
“Whoa—seeing myself! So *this* is how it feels…”
Bonus: the array stayed invisible to others, rainproof. Zero hassle.
“Success! …Okay, food *now*.”
She packed fast and headed to the cafeteria.
Near-empty at this hour. Still, she shifted back to male form—Luo Ling. No sunglasses yet; full disguise would wait.
“Ahhh… satisfied.”
Full and relaxed, Luo Ling pulled out his phone.
*Right. Call Mom about yesterday’s girl.*
“Hey, Mom.”
“Ah, my sweet son! Missing Mom already? I’ll come see you—”
“No! Important question.”
“Go ahead.” Her tone turned serious.
“Met a girl yesterday. My Demon Eye… didn’t work on her.”
“Oh? So proactive! Grandma’s getting a grandson soon~”
“N-no! I was invisible when she *saw* me! Tried using Demon Eye to erase her memory—it *failed*! It’s not like that…” Luo Ling stammered, cheeks flushing.
Silence on the line. His chest tightened. *Bad news?*
“Mom… say something. Don’t scare me.”
“Sorry… just remembering.”
“Remembered what?” he asked carefully.
“Mm… That girl… she might be a descendant of a Demon Hunter.”
