Chapter 22: Uncannily Upright Values

“And... the stuff between brothers and sisters...”

“No. You didn’t see anything.”

“Eh, but...” She turned around, tilted her head up at me, and looked like she wanted to say something.

I gave Xiao Xian a harmless, innocent smile.

I figured she’d get what I meant.

Sure enough, in the very next instant, Xiao Xian clammed up at once, like she’d just seen something terrifying.

“Alright then, now Daddy’s going to ask Xiao Xian something. Has Xiao Xian ever seen any strange picture books?” My smile was bright, and the voice coming from behind her was surely gentle and kind too.

I stroked Xiao Xian’s head and felt a slight tremble in the body I was holding.

“N-No!” Xiao Xian finally cried out under the pressure. “Absolutely not! I’ve never seen picture books of grown-ups fighting with no clothes on! Never!”

I showed a helpless smile. Sure enough, she really was a pure and innocent child. She’d actually only treated those as picture books. But that was fine too. In the future, I’d have to be more careful with Xiao Xian’s education. I absolutely couldn’t let her see this kind of not-for-kids stuff again.

Tomorrow, I’d clean up the notebooks at home and painfully hand them over to Fang Liancheng. Then I answered with a soft sound.

“Mhm, that’s more like it.”

Even if I’d used a mix of threats and coaxing, if I let this keep going, Xiao Xian would definitely keep joking about the stuff in those notebooks. It was better to kill off this tendency to tell dirty jokes early. After all, Xiao Xian was only six or seven, yet she already understood what an indirect kiss was. That learning ability was kind of terrifying.

While other kids her age were still playing house and enjoying pretending to be parents, she already understood the mystery of having babies—cough, cough, well, half-understood at least.

At the same time, I had to admit my values were impressively upright in a very unconventional way.

And when it came to raising kids, I was pretty accomplished too.

A child had suddenly appeared in my home, yet I hadn’t panicked at all. Instead, I’d handled everything in an orderly way. Even a mischievous kid like Xiao Xian had become obedient by now.

I was even thinking that if I opened a brat correction center in the future, I might make a fortune.

At that moment, Xiao Xian hurriedly escaped from my lap, then shrank into the corner of the sofa. With those aggrieved little eyes of hers, she watched me carefully.

She looked so timid, like a little bamboo rat that had just been warned about heatstroke.

Don’t be scared. You’re so cute, how could Daddy bear to eat—ah, no, to scold you? And in Daddy’s heart, you’re like a little white crown prince. There’s no way I’d eat—ah, no, scold you.

I ignored the shivering Xiao Xian, put on Peppa Pig for her, then went into the kitchen and started washing the dishes. It was already eight o’clock. In another hour, I’d have to make Xiao Xian go to bed.

As for me, of course I was going to grind games. Adults could do whatever they wanted, and I was Xiao Xian’s dad on top of that.

I was fully committing to the role of the unreasonable adult ahead of schedule, and honestly, I was kind of enjoying it.

Come to think of it, I probably needed to train Xiao Xian to do housework next. As I let water run over the dishes in the kitchen, I thought to myself that if that happened, wouldn’t it basically be like hiring a little maid? Hehe. What a despicable adult I was.

In truth, maybe because I wasn’t the gentle, indecisive high school boy type, I was nowhere near as shocked by Xiao Xian’s arrival as I’d imagined. I also accepted the fact that Xiao Xian was my daughter pretty quickly.

Being good at imagining things and trusting my own judgment was one of my strengths too.

That was probably also one of the reasons people sometimes saw me as a weirdo.

Even though I put a lot of effort into maintaining an excellent image outside, once I got home, letting myself loose was pretty much inevitable.

As I awkwardly washed dishes, rusty from not having done it in ages, I quietly wondered whether Senior did housework like washing dishes at home.

Probably not. I’d heard she came from a very good family, the kind people call a proper young lady.

And that girl who transferred in and stole my student representative spot was supposedly a young lady from a prestigious family too.

As for the former, I only felt admiration.

As for the latter, I wasn’t impressed at all.

Backdoor-dealing hack. Pfft.

Gu Qianqian, was it? Just you wait for the academy ranking exam coming up soon.
