There’s a saying: your school days aren’t exactly cheap or worthless. But like most ordinary people’s high school years, when Mo Xuan looked back on his after graduation, there really wasn’t much to say. Not much that was interesting, anyway.
If anything, the biggest spectacle had been how seriously he chased after Yun Jiumo back then. It became gossip for plenty of people. Luckily, he did win her over in the end. Otherwise, that story would’ve been passed around as a joke forever.
Relying on his old memories, he quickly found his classroom: Senior Year Class One.
Because he still had memories from his previous life, he subconsciously felt like some outsider who’d transmigrated into this place. So when he stepped through the school gates again, his heartbeat inevitably sped up. Even though the security guards looked at everyone the same way, he still had the nervous feeling that their eyes lingered on him a little longer on purpose.
What am I even scared of? Act natural. Walk boldly. Head up, chest out, stride like I own the place. Let’s see who dares mess with me.
Mo Xuan laughed at himself inwardly. He forced his head up and put on an arrogant grin, leaving the guards exchanging baffled looks.
Is this student okay?
Today was the first day of school. The senior year students also had to arrive ten minutes earlier than before, so there still weren’t that many people on campus yet. To keep the seniors focused on studying, the school had deliberately separated them from the other two grades. A bright, eye-catching building stood between the library and the gym, enough to show just how important its status was.
His classroom was on the second floor. On the way there, he saw quite a few seniors in Qingyuan High uniforms hurrying toward their classrooms in twos and threes. Almost no one had a genuinely happy smile on their face. Some looked even worse, their expressions dim and their smiles miserable, like they were marching toward an execution ground in utter despair. Anyone who didn’t know better might’ve thought they’d pulled an all-nighter on homework and created some kind of miracle.
In the past, he’d always gone in through the classroom’s front door by habit. But this time, considering Yun Jiumo might already be inside, he needed to prepare himself mentally first. So Mo Xuan deliberately dawdled over to the back door and quietly pulled open a crack to peek inside.
There were plenty of students more diligent than him. Even though the school gates had only just opened not long ago, the classroom was already nearly half full. Most of the students were at their seats tidying up their desks. A few had already started writing furiously, squeezing every last second out of their study time.
He looked around once and didn’t find the figure he’d been longing to see.
Mo Xuan quietly let out a breath of relief, though there was also a bit of disappointment in his heart.
He pushed the door open and walked in with confidence.
Only a few classmates sitting near the door glanced at him. The ones closer to him raised a hand in greeting. The rest quickly turned their attention back to whatever they were doing.
Even in a class, there would always be a few clearly divided zones. Little cliques weren’t limited to companies and workplaces. Student groups couldn’t avoid them either.
Mo Xuan’s position in the class was fairly special too.
By nature, he was optimistic and lively. He’d always liked helping others. He was the textbook definition of a social butterfly, the kind who could get familiar with people fast. That sort of personality naturally drew a lot of casual friends to him. But if it came to taking those relationships any deeper, there probably weren’t that many.
He had good grades, played basketball, and was handsome. A guy like that would never lack female attention during school years. On top of that, Mo Xuan was easy to get along with, so most of the girls in class had a favorable impression of him and were willing to chat and joke around with him.
As for the boys, he got along with most of them too. Most were people he’d met while playing basketball. The rest were basically the type he’d never really have anything to do with. Aside from exchanging a few words now and then, there wasn’t much interaction.
More importantly, everyone back then knew perfectly well that he was pursuing Yun Jiumo. Even though Yun Jiumo didn’t start showing her feelings until right before high school graduation, Mo Xuan’s persistence, which was practically shameless at times, still stirred up dissatisfaction in a small number of boys.
Anywhere you went, a pretty girl was a rare resource. Rather than seeing a flower picked by someone else, more people would rather no one succeeded at all. Better for everyone to just admire her quietly from afar.
But Mo Xuan refused to follow that unspoken rule. He insisted on pursuing her, and that led some guys to mutter behind his back, gleefully waiting for him to make a fool of himself.
He sat down in his seat, set down his backpack, and started organizing his books.
The process didn’t take long. For seniors, books mostly meant test papers, and they hadn’t all been handed out yet at the start of the term. Once you got used to this high-pressure life, the subject teachers would start dropping sheet after sheet on you with hideous enthusiasm, enough to bury a person alive. That was also why quite a few people had already hung a bag from the corner of their desk. It was purely for future planning.
There was still plenty of time left. With nothing better to do, Mo Xuan decided to head out for a walk and get familiar with the high school campus again.
He had just reached the back door and was about to turn around when a girl walking straight toward him nearly crashed into him. Startled, he quickly sidestepped to avoid her.
“Sorry, sorry, I wasn’t paying attention!” He bowed repeatedly with his hands pressed together. The moment he looked up, the girl’s cool, jet-black hair leaped into view.
Where his gaze landed, an exquisitely sculpted face was facing him head-on. Her rose-red eyes looked like agates washed clean in clear water.
Bang—
The crash from the back door drew the whole class’s attention. When they looked over, every one of them had their mouth hanging open.
Then someone burst out laughing, nearly doubling over.
“Hahahaha—Mo Xuan, what are you doing? Imitating Spider-Man stuck to the wall?”
“Holy crap, how’d you jump that high?”
“Damn, even your hair’s standing up.”
Amid the wave of laughter, Mo Xuan finally came back to himself. Red-faced, he peeled himself away from the wall’s embrace. He lowered his head and laughed awkwardly, his whole face stiff with embarrassment.
He didn’t dare look up, but he could clearly see the girl’s shoes.
They were the canvas shoes he knew so well. Short white socks wrapped around her pretty ankles. Her fair calves were hidden beneath the loose pant legs. The blue-and-white school uniform swayed lightly.
He caught the scent of roses. Yun Jiumo liked using shampoo with that fragrance. Through who knew how many nights, the two of them had fallen asleep in each other’s arms. Mo Xuan would rest his chin against his wife’s clean, smooth hair, and that rich floral scent would stay with him all the way into his dreams.
Those feet didn’t move. She simply stood there stubbornly in front of him, as if she would keep standing there forever if he refused to look up.
Half forced, half nervous, Mo Xuan raised his head. His heart skipped a beat.
The pure and moving girl stood gracefully before him, less than half a meter away. She was so clean and beautiful, like foam under sunlight, as if she might vanish in the blink of an eye.
The familiar long hair. The familiar red lips. The familiar neck. And the familiar chest—
No, wait. It seemed bigger later...
Wait! What the hell am I thinking? Stop right there!
Mo Xuan screamed inwardly in panic, yet his whole body felt like a wind-up puppet that had run out of spring. He was stiff all over, unable to muster any strength.
Even the smile on his face looked especially awkward. It took him a great deal of effort just to meet the girl’s eyes, and even then his gaze kept darting away.
“Yo—Yun Jiumo... m-morning...”
He tried hard to put on a confident, natural smile. He tried hard to keep his tone from exposing the panic in his heart. But the moment he opened his mouth, he almost collapsed on the spot.
Whether it was the shock of suddenly running into her just now, or the ending of their previous life that had slipped into his mind without warning, all of it made his heart pound like a drum. No matter what, he couldn’t calm down.
At that instant, a terrifying thought suddenly flashed through his mind.
Could Yun Jiumo have been reborn too, just like him?
The moment that thought appeared, the blood in his whole body nearly froze.
The girl, who had been silent from start to finish, blinked. Then she slowly revealed a friendly, gentle smile.
“Good morning, Mo Xuan.”
Her clear, lively voice flowed into his ears, beautiful like the sound of a rose blooming.
A ripple curved at the corner of her lips, like a clear spring, sweet and cool.
And Mo Xuan could only smile back at her as normally as he could, just like before.
After saying that greeting, she walked into the classroom with elegant steps, her gaze fixed straight ahead.
Whether it was her attitude toward him or that greeting, both were exactly the same as in his memory.
Mo Xuan’s eyes flickered. In the end, he finally relaxed his whole body and walked back to his seat as well.
