6. From Brother-in-Law to Sister-in-Law
update icon Updated at 2025/12/12 21:34:15

Jianglai, now a woman, was pinned in a hotel room by her sister-in-law Yingyu Chi’s single-handed grip. Even if she wanted to explain, she could feel Yingyu’s hold tightening—her palm growing numb.

Yingyu stared at the delicate woman before her. Judging by age alone, she seemed barely out of college. How could someone so young do something so vile?

A cold snort escaped Yingyu. Her devotion to her brother-in-law made her blame this stranger for everything. Having known Jianglai for over a decade, she understood him better than anyone—even his late wife.

Yet despite that closeness, she’d always stayed on the sidelines, watching quietly. Why? Why was this greenhorn wearing her brother-in-law’s clothes? What happened last night?

A surge of injustice burned in Yingyu’s chest. They’d shared fifteen years of daily life, yet Jianglai kept pushing her away—now replacing her with an outsider.

As Yingyu teetered on the edge of collapse, Jianglai’s wrist aching in her grip, tears welled in Jianglai’s eyes. "Yingyu… I’m Jianglai. It’s unbelievable, but I’m your brother-in-law."

The words sounded like a joke. Yingyu’s fury flared hotter. "Girl, even if you’re scared, don’t tell lies that’ll get you caught."

She wanted to punish this imposter—but first, she needed to find the real Jianglai. Where was he? His clothes were here… was he in the bathroom?

Her eyes darted to the frosted glass door. Empty. Doubt deepened.

While Yingyu scanned the room, Jianglai’s mind raced. Of course she wouldn’t believe this. Who’d think a grown man could become… this? Yet here she was—younger, female, unrecognizable even to those closest to her.

Jianglai grasped at a secret only she knew. "Yingyu, I *am* your brother-in-law. Your name is Yingyu Chi. You’re twenty-nine. Birthday: February 14th. You love spicy food. You’re terribly picky about beds… and you still sleep with that little bear plushie from high school."

As Jianglai spoke, Yingyu’s grip loosened. Her anger melted into confusion. How could this girl know such things? Even Jianglai wouldn’t share these details.

Seeing Yingyu’s hesitation, Jianglai pressed on with a memory only two people shared—a secret not even her daughter knew.

"The month before college entrance exams, you couldn’t sleep. Every time you drifted off, you’d have nightmares. For thirty nights straight, I told you bedtime stories. Especially the night before exams—you fell asleep with your head on my arm… mmph!"

Yingyu clamped a hand over Jianglai’s mouth.

That memory shattered her doubt. What happened that night belonged only to them. Jianglai would never tell a soul.

"Are you really my brother-in-law… Jianglai?"

Jianglai nodded frantically against Yingyu’s palm.

Yingyu’s rage cooled into bewilderment. Even if this was Jianglai… why was he a woman now?

She studied the face before her. Earlier fury had blinded her. Now, she saw familiar traces beneath the feminine features—Jianglai’s essence lingering in the eyes, the nose, the curve of the lips. Details invisible at first glance.

A sister’s face… but younger. A female version of Jianglai’s youth.

No matter how absurd, the truth stood undeniable. Yingyu’s fingers drifted to Jianglai’s cheek, tracing its cool surface. "Your eyes… your nose… even your mouth. So much like him. You’d miss it if you didn’t look close."

The intimate touch left Jianglai flustered. For the first time, she saw Yingyu differently—literally. She’d shrunk. Once looking down at her sister-in-law, now she tilted her head up.

Yingyu glowed—polished, radiant. The little girl who’d once clung to her sleeve crying was now a poised woman. Jasmine scent curled around Jianglai. Silky fingertips mapped her face. Their bodies stood a breath apart.

"Yingyu… can you let go? We’re too close."

Yingyu didn’t pull back. She leaned in until Jianglai felt her breath. Tear-misted eyes reddened at the corners. Jianglai’s parted lips, the dip of her collarbone—more alluring than when drunk the night before.

Just as Jianglai’s heart threatened to burst—

Yingyu’s voice turned icy. "You reek of alcohol. Where were you drinking last night? You promised me you’d quit."
