Chapter 43: Esports Club Council
update icon Updated at 2026/1/12 16:00:02

Back when Jiang Xuehan was still Meng Han, the top-ranked streamer, she often live-streamed other popular games or fun single-player titles.

Her gaming talent was exceptional—she mastered any new game quickly, and viewers loved it. After all, watching the same game nonstop could get boring.

Lately, she streamed nightly, but viewership stayed low. Only about a hundred new followers had joined her channel.

Her skills were solid, yet many viewers, hearing a girl’s voice, immediately grilled her about looks. Whether she played well seemed irrelevant.

Jiang Xuehan was genuinely troubled. She pondered streaming games better suited for girls to slowly rebuild her audience.

But tonight, she couldn’t stream on time. She had somewhere crucial to be: the Esports Club activity room. It was their first meeting after semester started.

When Jiang Xuehan arrived alone at dusk, three people were already seated. Wu De, the new president, spotted her and rushed over excitedly: “Uh, Xiao Han, you’re here so early.”

“Only five minutes early. That’s not really early, is it?”

“Uh, true… Let me introduce you to our senior members…”

By 7:10 PM, all current members finally gathered. But there were only six people total, including Jiang Xuehan. It felt quieter than a high school club.

Sensing her confusion, Wu De explained awkwardly: “It’s just the semester start. Many seniors are interning or working, so they quit. Right now, with you, we’re six. But recruitment week begins tomorrow. With good promotion, we’ll get busy fast.”

Wu De’s buddy Ding Kui chimed in: “Yeah, the president’s right. Plus, we finally have a girl member. With you there, we’ll attract tons of sign-ups.”

Only then did Jiang Xuehan realize she was the only girl present. No—accurately, the only one in girl’s clothing. Girls clearly weren’t into esports much.

With so few people, the “meeting” felt like casual chatter. Most were sophomores, her seniors, intensely curious about the petite, cute underclassman. They grilled her for details, making her deeply uncomfortable.

Wu De noticed her unease and stepped in: “Alright, let’s focus. The school pushed our booth to a remote corner. But with solid prep, we won’t lose to other clubs! Here’s a sample flyer—check it out.”

The flyer was basically an ad, briefly listing the club’s history and free membership. Wu De was clearly desperate for new blood.

Everyone approved it. They discussed booth setup and timings, finalizing plans.

But Jiang Xuehan felt anxious. After the meeting, she hurried to Wu De: “Hey, what about training for the league in two weeks? When do we start?”

“Well… I want to train, but the other two members are swamped. Practicing with just us two isn’t useful…” Wu De scratched his head awkwardly. “Don’t worry—this weekend, everyone’s free. We’ll drill tactics and teamwork.”

With the president saying that, Jiang Xuehan had no reply. But that 20,000-yuan prize felt suddenly distant.

As she turned to leave, Wu De called her back: “Uh, Xiao Han, you’ll help tomorrow at noon, right?”

“Of course. I’m a club member—it’s my duty.”

“Um… Xiao Han, could you wear something different tomorrow?”

“Different clothes?” Jiang Xuehan glanced at her clean T-shirt and jeans. “Why?”

Wu De hesitated carefully: “You look cute like this, but our recruits are mostly male freshmen. If you dressed… cuter, more eye-catching… you know.”

Jiang Xuehan understood instantly. He wanted a booth babe—using her looks to lure visitors. Proud since childhood, she scoffed: “President, this is my style. I’ll wear the same tomorrow. I won’t dress up to please those guys. Clear?”

Wu De winced. The club finally had a girl member, and he counted on her. Jiang Xuehan’s neutral style had a spring-like purity, but flashy girls might overshadow her.

Then Wu De recalled the internet cafe incident. He brightened: “I know this is tough. How about this—for every sign-up you bring tomorrow, I’ll personally pay you 10 yuan. Deal?”

Jiang Xuehan’s heart leapt. 10 yuan wasn’t much, but Donghai University had nearly ten thousand freshmen. Minus girls, thousands of guys. If a hundred signed up, she’d earn 1,000 yuan—half a month’s cafe wages. Broke as she was, she nodded fast: “Deal!”

But after leaving the club, Jiang Xuehan started worrying: what outfit would make boys rush to sign up? She still saw female beauty through a guy’s eyes, but applying it to herself felt confusing. With endless dress styles, she had no clue what suited her now.
