31. Frailty and Grace

Though I’ve seen plenty of school horror movies and played my fair share of those games, who’d have thought it’d actually happen to me? Still, she’s just one girl. We’ve got two people on our side. It’s only a pair of scissors—why should we be scared?

“Where’d you even meet a girl like that? I knew you were trouble, but why’s every mess you make so damn complicated?”

Xia Mo mocked me without a care for the situation, her voice way too loud. We were hiding in a geology prep room on the third floor, right below the rooftop where we’d just fled.

Truth was, this was the first time I’d ever seen Xia Mo show fear. She’d yelled “Run!” at the top of her lungs and bolted faster than anyone. Who knew that girl could scare her this badly?

Normally—like that time we ran into Lingchuan at the food street—Xia Mo would’ve fired back instantly. This time, she chose to run.

*(Wait, isn’t this supposed to be a school story? Since when did it turn into a bloodbath?)*

“How should I know? I don’t even know her. She just confessed to me, that’s all…”

“You!!”

Xia Mo’s face twisted in horror. She shrieked without thinking, then clamped a hand over her mouth.

“To think there’s another idiot like me out there!”

*Glad you realize you’re an idiot… Wait. Hold on—that sounded like an insult to me?*

“Keep your voice down! What if she hears us?”

I didn’t get why I was scared. She was alone. We had double the numbers. And her weapon was just scissors—a chair could block it! Or hell, one solid brick would do the trick.

“We shouldn’t hide anymore. If we keep this up, it’ll be pitch black soon. Let’s just face her head-on. We’ve got the numbers, and she’s just a girl. Deal?”

Xia Mo ignored me completely. She was glued to the window facing the hallway, scanning the corridor outside.

“You’re seriously sexist—though it’s not a bad plan. But how do you plan to lure *that* girl out? The whole point of fighting fair is to catch her, right? So you’d better find your yandere girlfriend first!”

Her reply came nearly five minutes later. *Sorry about the sexism thing—it was just a figure of speech. And what’s this “my yandere girlfriend” nonsense?*

“Aren’t you here? Seriously, your brain’s barely working in this situation—”

“Hah? So you’re making me bait?”

Xia Mo whirled around, eyes blazing. I just smiled and nodded.

“You’re the only one who fits the role.”

And so, Xia Mo got stationed at the stairwell entrance. If things went south, she could bolt fast.

The plan was simple: once the enemy entered range, Xia Mo would distract her while I rushed out to subdue her.

Of course, the only goal after catching her was to explain the weird, complicated relationship between Xia Mo and me.

Footsteps echoed from the far end of the hallway, creeping closer. She’d only found us because of Xia Mo’s outburst earlier—

*Which I forced her into.*

I crouched behind a classroom door near the stairs, hidden tight. The moment that yandere girl passed by, I’d pounce.

“So you actually came out? Why not run? You’ll die anyway, girlfriend of Hara-kun.”

The girl tilted her head unnaturally, confusion in her voice. She raised her scissors, pointing them at Xia Mo ten meters away.

*Enemy contact in five seconds.*

“I’m terrified. But if I don’t clear things up with you… I really might die.”

Xia Mo’s acting was flawless as always. She’d be a star if she ever tried acting—but she never would. The girl, Zixuan, had already walked past my classroom door. I could’ve ended it right then. But I didn’t. *Why the hell am I even helping Xia Mo?*

“Clear things up? What’s there to explain? It’s obvious. You’re Hara-kun’s girlfriend, so you must disappear from this world.”

Her voice left no room for doubt. Her only thought was erasing the girl before her.

“What if I told you my relationship with him is fake? Would you spare us then?”

Xia Mo was buying time, trusting I’d strike. Her faith made me almost ashamed—I hadn’t planned to move at all.

“Fake? You think I’d believe such a cheap lie? Just die already! Once you’re gone… Hara-kun will be mine forever!”

As Zixuan advanced toward Xia Mo at the stairs, I couldn’t see clearly from my spot. A scream cut through the air—then a figure dashed past me. *Xia Mo?!*

She’d dodged an attack and circled behind the girl. When she sprinted past me, she shot me a glare. *Guess I can’t stall anymore.* I sprang up, sprinting like an Olympian. Zixuan reacted instantly. I lunged from her right—I could’ve disarmed her smoothly, maybe even looked cool doing it.

But the moment my foot hit the ground, something tripped me. Only three people were on this floor. Nothing on the floor. One girl ahead, one behind. Only Xia Mo could’ve done it…

When I came to, I’d pinned Zixuan to the ground. *Was this payback for earlier?*

“Y-you… why did you suddenly tackle me…? There’s someone else here… n-no, we can’t…”

That soft, trembling voice whispered in my ear. *What the hell?* The girl beneath me flushed crimson from ear to ear. She squirmed, twisting her head away like she couldn’t bear me seeing her face.

*Can someone explain what’s happening? Since when did she get this shy?*

Before I could process it, a foot stomped hard on my back.

No need to guess who that was. I tried to stand—but couldn’t move an inch. I strained with all my strength, yet stayed frozen.

“Stop struggling. I’ve got your center of gravity locked. Stay in this creepy position! Hiding while I faced danger? You wanted me dead, didn’t you? People really are unpredictable.”

“Can we talk this out?”

I regretted my plan instantly. Being pinned was bad enough—but I was also kneeling in a very unfortunate spot… *inside the girl’s skirt!*

“So… Miss Yandere… what exactly do you want?”
