Chapter 44: Is This Just? No, It Is Not.

Even with an elite education, Liu Yi barely suppressed the urge to curse.

Watching Chunan buy the watch at half price without hesitation—without even blinking—filled him with an indescribable sense of powerlessness for the first time in his life.

*This watch still costs over a hundred thousand yuan even on discount! If you could buy it without blinking, why the hell did you put on that conflicted face earlier?!*

*What were you even hesitating about?!*

*All his internal monologues had been wasted!*

*His rare act of kindness! You bastard! You absolute bastard!*

*—Where the hell did this so-called "new generation" even come from?! Could they at least follow the script?!*

Chunan had no idea what churned in Liu Yi’s mind.

His earlier hesitation was purely over whether reselling felt... unethical.

After all, this was Brother Chen’s store, right?

But after thinking it through: even if Chen Peng had lent him the black card, he was still paying for it. Not freeloading. Not a gift. Reselling it afterward didn’t seem wrong.

So he bought it.

As for the hundred-thousand-yuan price tag… his funds were low, but he could still spare that much. No big expenses loomed in the near future anyway.

What did surprise him was the sales assistant’s sudden shift in attitude after he pulled out the black card. They probably mistook him for Brother Chen… Maybe this card was exclusive to Chen’s family business?

If so, Chen Peng lending it so casually spoke volumes about his trust.

Chunan’s regard for Chen Peng rose a notch.

After getting the watch, Chunan didn’t put it on immediately. He rarely wore watches—his phone told time just fine. Flaunting such an expensive piece felt like showing off, something he disliked.

To Liu Yi, this triggered a fresh wave of internal screaming:

*Why buy it if you won’t wear it?! What was even the point?!*

*If you don’t need it, give it to someone who does!*

*Did you just buy it to show off for five minutes in front of your girlfriend?!*

*What on earth was this guy thinking?!*

*How could he not understand this guy’s thought process?!*

*Was this really how the so-called "new generation" operated?*

With the watch bought, staying made little sense. But Liu Yi had explained so much—he deserved thanks.

"Thanks, Brother Liu," Chunan smiled. "By the way, are you here to buy a watch too?"

"Ah…" Liu Yi’s expression stiffened for a split second. "...Yeah."

"Found one yet?" Chunan was curious what Liu Yi would choose.

Liu Yi’s eyes turned hollow.

*He’s messing with me.*

How could he answer? After Chunan bought the store’s most expensive piece, admitting he could only afford a 40,000-yuan watch—barely within his budget—would be humiliating.

Lie and say he wanted something equally pricey?

What if Chunan stayed to watch him buy it?

*Damn it. He hadn’t noticed before, but now he realized Chunan was utterly ruthless.*

*Holding a tiny grudge and crushing someone over it? That’s not right.*

But he had to reply… *Shit.* His shortcut backfired, leaving him trapped. He should’ve checked the almanac before leaving home today.

Taking a deep breath, his voice turned rigid: "Actually… I wanted a Vantox too. But it seems the store only had the one Brother just bought."

Chunan paused. "Why didn’t you say so earlier?"

Now he looked like he’d stolen it from under Liu Yi’s nose.

Liu Yi forced a smile. "No worries. You clearly needed it more. I’ll wait for the next batch."

Chunan cleared his throat lightly. "How about this? I only need this watch for a month or two for something specific. After that, it’ll be useless to me. If you still haven’t found one by then, I’ll sell it to you at 70% of the original price."

That was far below secondhand market value.

Liu Yi: "…"

*Motherf—*

He sucked in another breath and yanked his girlfriend up. "No need. Keep it, Brother. A watch like this symbolizes status—it’ll boost your image at banquets. I’ll buy mine later. We’ve got things to do. Bye."

He dragged her away, terrified Chunan might force him to buy a watch if he lingered another second.

*He never wanted to see this guy again.*

—Chunan, meanwhile, thought Liu Yi was quite decent.

Selfless. No greed for small gains. A friend worth keeping.

Pity he’d lost a potential buyer.

But no rush. Things would work out.

After Liu Yi left, Chunan and Xiaohan exited the store.

Xiaohan was still buzzing from the scene, giddy: "Being rich really is amazing. Buying something worth over a hundred thousand without blinking… Hey Chunan, will we get even richer later?"

She craved that careless extravagance.

Chunan shot her a sidelong glance. "Only if you avoid stupid stunts that get you blacklisted in the entertainment industry."

"Impossible. I’m not dumb." Xiaohan pouted, already daydreaming again. "So all the money I make in showbiz later is mine, right? When I’m rich, will you still support me financially?"

"Do you want me to?"

"Yes."

*Who’d refuse free luxury?*

Besides, hoarding cash in her private stash was just insurance—in case Chunan went bankrupt and they ended up homeless.

She’d accepted her role as his assistant anyway.

But what to call him? Boss? Superior? Mr. Chu? Master?

The question stumped her.

*…Whatever. An assistant just needs to be fed by Chunan!*

Chunan sighed, not objecting. "As long as you want to stay at my place, I won’t kick you out. And when you’re ready to leave, I won’t stop you."

He’d never seen her as his possession. At most, he felt the physical attraction any man would toward his "exclusive assistant."

But if Xiaohan truly wanted to pursue something—as long as it wasn’t evil—he’d never stand in her way.

That was the only attitude a childhood friend should have.
