Chapter 45: The Hero

To be honest, Mirror October’s feelings toward the Superhero Administration were incredibly complex. It was a testament to his past beliefs—a spiritual pillar countless people had pinned their hopes on back then. Yet this very testament had ruthlessly shoved him into despair at his most helpless, most desperate moment.

Claiming he felt no hatred would be pure self-deception!

Mirror October still vividly recalled how the Porcelain King froze his body at a critical instant. His attackers showed zero mercy, unleashing lethal strikes as if determined to tear him limb from limb.

Even facing the Dire Calamity hadn’t sparked such fierce hatred…

No wonder spotting the Porcelain King’s trail triggered a fleeting impulse in Mirror October—to charge recklessly and pulverize that traitor with absolute fury. But noticing the delicate, trembling figure of the little beast he was bullying, he forcibly suppressed that tidal wave of rage. His coldly rational, inhuman side reclaimed dominance.

“Big brother, where are we going?” The little beast beside him bubbled with excitement, practically bouncing as she walked. She clutched Mirror October’s hand tightly, never feeling the world so beautiful.

“Where would you like to go?”

Though slightly distracted, Mirror October radiated flawless gentle warmth, perfectly masking his icy mechanical rationality. He let Mumu lead his hand, his narrow, sharp eyes flickering with enigmatic light. While answering her endless curious questions, he processed fresh data from Dragon Sparrow in his mind—meticulously planning against coal tycoon Wu Jianguo.

Those who didn’t cherish life didn’t deserve it. Even for the vilest criminals, Mirror October offered a sliver of hope. Burying the wicked, granting new life to the virtuous—he tirelessly pursued this path.

“Then let’s go to the Ferris wheel!!”

Mumu, lost in ecstatic frenzy, missed the cold indifference deep in Mirror October’s crimson eyes. She eagerly tugged him into a trot. Though they hadn’t officially confirmed their relationship, outsiders saw them as undeniably couple-like.

Heh, such an outdated view of romance.

Mirror October couldn’t help but smirk. This gradual relationship progression felt ancient to him—probably only pure student-era hearts believed in waiting until things naturally solidified to avoid rejection.

Gazing at Mumu’s innocent, determined smile beside him, his face looked strangely shadowed in the sunlight.

Growth came in many forms…

“Mumu, your training today seemed exceptionally hard,” Mirror October said from the Ferris wheel cabin, watching the ground rise below. He casually mentioned the little beast’s ability drills. “Interesting”—that summed up his take on Mumu’s Superhero power. Not overwhelmingly strong, but undeniably intriguing.

Even for someone like Mirror October, who’d seen nearly all global hero powers—awakened or not—to call it “interesting” meant Mumu’s ability was truly thought-provoking.

Perhaps it was fate. Mumu, who’d happened to find him, carried a power he’d just happened to detect.

Heavenly Fire, huh…

“Mm, I want to become the strongest hero.”

“Ah, a remarkable dream. But why the sudden change?” New goals always stemmed from a trigger—and right now, Mirror October himself was likely Mumu’s biggest one.

“Because… big brother, can I skip this?” She wanted to become the strongest, most respected hero for him—to serve as steward to the ultimate hero! Such cheesy, emotional words made thin-skinned Mumu blush and avert her gaze under his thoughtful stare.

Of course, her roommate’s relentless romantic lectures last night mattered too. And the instinctive threat Ruosui Jing posed—Mumu simply couldn’t rival that proud prodigy.

That woman definitely had improper thoughts about big brother!

Mumu was absolutely certain!

“If you don’t want to say, don’t. No pressure~~ But, Mumu…” Mirror October leaned lazily sideways, his exposed collarbone alluring. The tiny cabin hummed with ascetic yet tempting energy. “Do you truly want to chase power? Do you really want to become… a hero?”

Becoming a hero meant bearing burdens utterly opposed to his current path.

Growth’s price was often suffocating pain. If Mumu truly had the resolve to protect, Mirror October believed exposing her early to the world’s cruelty was kindest. Pain nourished growth best—he understood human nature and knew the right path.

“Ahahaha… Actually, I never really had the determination to be a hero,” Mumu laughed awkwardly. Her awakening was pure accident; she’d never dreamed of grand heroism protecting humanity.

“I don’t want to be everyone’s hero—I’m weak… useless, always have been. Dad called me a money pit, good for nothing. So I won’t be a hero, won’t die fighting the Dire Calamity for strangers. I’m scared—I can’t do it, absolutely can’t die for others.” What a reactionary statement! In today’s Superhero-crazed world, such words would get you flamed into oblivion, living under disdainful stares. This self-deprecating, cowardly girl speaking so bluntly was utterly unexpected.

“If that’s how you feel, tell only me. Never say it to others again,” Mirror October said earnestly, watching the girl at the cabin’s far end gaze at the azure sky. For the first time, her entire being radiated inescapable melancholy.

That was her deepest fear: gaining power only to realize she lacked the heart to wield heroic strength.

Not everyone can be a hero…

“It’s okay, big brother! I knew on my awakening night I couldn’t be everyone’s hero! Don’t worry, I’m fine!” Because I can’t be the world’s hero, big brother Mirror October—I’ll be yours alone!

Mirror October would never forget that day, that moment—the happy smile on that ordinary girl’s face, as if she’d finally found her unique color in a barren world.
