"Principal, I'm leaving Little Feng in your care~"
Su Shui dragged Lin Feng along, still dealing with the money-grubbing old man in the principal’s office.
"Of course! Lin Feng chose to leave his cozy home for school—a quality others should emulate!"
The principal stroked the two hairs on his head, beaming at Lin Feng.
"Then we’ll trouble you~" Su Shui led Lin Feng toward the door.
"Hold on!" The principal rushed to block Su Shui.
"Thanks, Principal, but we won’t disturb you~"
Su Shui sidestepped, ready to bolt.
"We haven’t discussed dorm fees yet…" The principal grabbed Su Shui’s sleeve, yanking him back.
"Principal, after all these years, talking money hurts feelings~"
"Kid, talking feelings hurts wallets more~"
Su Shui and the old principal exchanged grins, feeling like old friends reunited.
"Little Feng, I need to chat with the principal. Wait outside…"
…
…
Less than ten minutes later, Su Shui and the principal stepped out of the office.
"Mr. Su, thank you for supporting education~"
"And thank you for sponsoring this poor soul~"
If not for their neat clothes and short time, Lin Feng would’ve thought they’d made some shady deal.
"Let’s go, Little Feng. Time to set up your dorm~"
Su Shui slung an arm over Lin Feng’s shoulders, strolling out cheerfully.
"Split it fifty-fifty!"
"Fine, here’s two hundred~"
Lin Feng had only tested the waters—never expecting Su Shui to pocket private savings again.
"No way! Two hundred’s too little!" Lin Feng, now savvy, thrust his small hand at Su Shui.
"Too little?! I barely kept eight hundred after all that arguing! You want half just by asking? Greedy!"
"Whatever. Give me another hundred, or I’ll tell my sister!"
"You win."
Su Shui scowled, pulling a hundred from his pocket.
"Thanks, brother-in-law~"
"Ugh, scram! You’re bad luck for my wallet!"
Su Shui shoved Lin Feng ahead, annoyed.
He trailed behind, carefully pulling out a small envelope—still holding eight hundred.
"Kid, you think you’ve got me figured out?!"
…
…
Su Shui drove his rickety minivan, swaying all the way to the dorm building.
He’d wanted to borrow Lin Ning’s car, but she called it too flashy.
"Alright, you’re on the fifth floor. Grab your bag!"
Su Shui yanked a huge backpack from the car, heaving it onto Lin Feng’s back.
Lin Feng nearly collapsed, steadying himself against the wall.
"Aren’t you helping?!"
"Nah, I’m tired."
"Fine, I’ll do it myself!"
Lin Feng dragged the bag inside, glancing around nervously.
"Hey kid, what’re you here for?" The dorm supervisor pointed at him.
"I’m a new resident. Where’s the elevator—"
"Show your student ID!" The old man eyed him and the massive bag warily.
"Here you go~" Lin Feng handed it over. The supervisor scrutinized him, comparing face to photo.
"Fine." After a long stare, he waved Lin Feng through.
"Told you I’m not a bad guy~"
"You never said that~"
The retort shut Lin Feng up. He hauled the bag toward the elevator.
"No elevator~"
The supervisor puffed his pipe, murmuring to the sweating Lin Feng.
"Why didn’t you say sooner?!"
"Ridiculous! Six floors don’t need an elevator!"
He shot Lin Feng a disdainful look, shaking his head as he turned away.
"Good kid, but so clueless?"
…
…
Sometimes, you bow to fate—like Lin Feng begging Su Shui now.
"Dear brother-in-law, I really can’t carry this~"
"Five hundred!" Su Shui flashed five fingers.
"Don’t you feel bad?!" Lin Feng glared. He’d only scammed three hundred—now Su Shui wanted profit?
"Not sure about bad, but I know your legs’ll ache climbing five floors~"
"Two hundred!"
"Three hundred minimum!"
"Deal!"
Lin Feng winced, pulling out the still-warm three hundred and slapping it into Su Shui’s hand.
"Hurry up and help!" He glared at Su Shui, who was slacking off.
"Relax, no biggie~"
Su Shui dashed to the guard room, slipping the supervisor a hundred.
"Kids these days~"
The old man hunched over, shuffling out slowly.
"Su Shui, what’re you pulling?!" Lin Feng yanked him aside, whispering angrily.
"Getting help. We can’t manage alone~"
"Can he even lift it? You’ll give him a heart attack!"
"Just watch~"
The supervisor grabbed the backpack effortlessly.
"Kid, which room?"
Lin Feng gaped. Truly, hidden masters lurk in guard rooms!
"Room 504, fifth floor! Thanks, sir!" Su Shui patted Lin Feng’s shoulder. "Move it, stop daydreaming!"
"Are all supervisors this strong now? Or is the job tough?"
"You underestimate his single-life qilin arm~"
…
…
Money solves everything. The principal had prepped the empty bed—Lin Feng just needed to put on covers.
Staring at his soon-to-be four-person dorm, Lin Feng felt a flutter of excitement.
"All set!" Su Shui tossed a pillow onto the bed. "Come on, I need your help with something~"
"What?" Lin Feng eyed him warily. "Three hundred!"
"Never mind then~" Su Shui turned to leave. "Guess I’ll find someone else to visit the girls’ dorm…"
"Wait! Here’s fifty~ Brother-in-law, buy a drink!"
Lin Feng smoothly handed over fifty, trotting after him.
At the girls’ dorm, the matron eyed the two stepping from the minivan suspiciously.
"Auntie, I’m helping my sister move. Here’s the principal’s note!"
Su Shui slipped her a paper. She scanned it. "Fine, go in~"
Inside the dorm, Su Shui and Lin Feng gawked like country bumpkins in the city.
"Hey! What are you peeping at?!"
Su Qing stood in the hallway, hands on hips.
"Nothing, nothing~" Su Shui hurried over, taking her bags.
"Chop-chop, Lin Feng—get to work!"
…
…
After half an hour of shuttling, Su Qing’s stuff filled the van.
Lin Feng grew uneasy, staring at her emptied room.
"What’s this for? Why move everything out?"
"You didn’t know? I’m moving back to my brother’s place!" Su Qing chirped excitedly.
Lin Feng’s face twisted like he’d swallowed something foul. Inside, he screamed:
"If you’re gone… why did I even come here to live?!"
