40. Shi Ren, Aghast: "Mei Yi Ge? Shi Ren
update icon Updated at 2026/1/6 7:00:02

Mei Yige was furious.

Though she’d enjoyed pulling pranks on Ane-sama Shiren, anger still bubbled up inside her.

As a wage slave, she couldn’t even enjoy the simple pleasure of drinking ice water in the middle of the night.

All that exhaustion and resentment from hard work just wouldn’t fade.

This was unbearable torture!

*What?*

*Just use magic to chill the water. Easier.*

*Did she not know that?!*

She wasn’t an idiot. This was about life’s little rituals. Yet her most respected landlord sister had violated this core habit of hers.

Unacceptable. She *had* to throw a tantrum.

"Don’t stuff weird shouzi-looking things into the fridge! And where’d you even get all this blood? Cleaning a messy fridge is a pain, you know!

Mixing it with food? Total waste! Ane-sama Shiren, you’re an adult—act like one before pulling pranks, okay?"

Her pent-up frustration erupted into an unprecedented scolding.

The bewildered Great Lord Blood Demon snapped to attention.

She couldn’t grasp what was happening.

*This wasn’t how it was supposed to go!*

Shouldn’t Mei Yige have been terrified by her setup? Shouldn’t she have begged for mercy on her knees before the Great Lord devoured her?

What was *this*?

Did she think this was a joke? A prank?

Her plan had zero effect?

*Damn it!*

Bewilderment turned to furious embarrassment.

"You—!"

"So now you’re mad at *me* after doing something wrong, Ane-sama Shiren?!"

"I—I just... why aren’t you scared?! This isn’t fair! It’s all wrong! Waaah..."

Overwhelmed by Mei Yige’s sharp retort, the Great Lord Blood Demon’s defenses shattered. Forgetting her dignity entirely, Shiren fled back to her room without looking back.

Mei Yige was left frowning.

"Still just a kid... honestly."

She felt zero guilt. She’d comfort her later—slowly. This time, Shiren was clearly in the wrong.

Even if the rent was only one silver, discipline was necessary. That’s how cohabitation worked.

Sighing deeply at the scattered mess, Mei Yige muttered:

"Magic that turns lifeless things to ash."

She snapped her fingers. The blood-stained food vanished from the crimson fridge. After several cleansing spells restored it to spotless condition, Mei Yige trudged back to her room, her thirst forgotten.

Unbeknownst to her, Shiren—gnashing her teeth in fury—had already activated Plan B.

"I was careless. Fine then, Mei Yige. If separate parts don’t scare you... what about the whole?"

Shiren smirked down at the tightly bound man, examining the business card in her hand:

> **Hadi Mantey**

> Occupation: Spice Merchant

> Race: Human

> Flesh Quality: Poor

> Crimes: Rape, murder, robbery (protected by local powers)

As the Great Lord Blood Demon, she’d never abandon her resolve so easily.

Her earlier breakdown? Merely a ploy to lower Mei Yige’s guard.

Glaring at the man, Shiren raised her Magic Wand and lashed him twice more.

No one would discover this kidnapping.

This trash had been air-freighted from far beyond Tata Town. Shiren’s ledger was filled with such "interesting" criminals.

Plenty more existed—but immediate action was inconvenient. As long as no one punished them, Shiren saw no issue using them to spice up her long, boring existence.

Naturally, this man’s severed pinky finger—and his bracelet—had already been delivered to their destination. The rest? Merely props for her plan.

"I hadn’t planned this... but waste not, want not. Heh..."

She checked the time.

4:30 AM. Thirty minutes until Mei Yige’s usual wake-up time.

Plenty of time.

Dragging the condemned prop, Shiren slipped into Mei Yige’s room and dumped him on the floor. She waited for the light sleeper to sense something amiss.

Mei Yige woke the moment the door opened.

A dark shape crashed inside. She instantly drew her Magic Wand, nearly blasting it with an instant spell—

Then froze.

"...Why is there a person here?"

Confused, she approached the man and yanked the gag from his mouth.

"Help! She’s a demon! She’ll eat me!" Hadi sobbed, his terror utterly genuine.

Shiren chose that moment to step through the doorway, watching them coldly.

"Ane-sama Shiren... is this a new game?" Mei Yige looked up, puzzled.

"What do *you* think?" Shiren’s voice was icy.

"So you’re going to eat him? Make it quick then. I can’t handle this kind of ‘ingredient,’ and I’m still sleepy. Sorry for yelling earlier." Mei Yige rubbed her temples wearily. "It *is* your fridge. As a tenant, I shouldn’t have overstepped. I upset you."

*She apologized.*

*She admitted fault.*

Shiren felt a flicker of satisfaction—but this wasn’t the apology she wanted!

"Aren’t you even *curious* or *scared* that I tied him up and threw him here to eat?!"

Shiren couldn’t understand Mei Yige anymore. Was she just slow? Or... was she somehow *less human* than a Demonic Being?

This pure-hearted kid was *too* pure.

Even when presented with food right before her eyes, Mei Yige barely reacted.

*Was this normal?*

*Had human thinking evolved beyond her?*

Shiren bit her lip, waiting for an answer.

"Huh? I was actually suspicious about renting this place for just one silver. I thought something shady must be going on. But Ane-sama Shiren turned out to be unexpectedly sweet and kind—a total softie!

You tolerate all my nonsense, which honestly makes me uneasy. But now? I’m relieved. A little quirk like eating people? No big deal. I won’t tell anyone. Seriously—so what if you eat a person?"

Mei Yige smiled. She meant it. It wasn’t like *she* hadn’t eaten Demonic Beings during wartime famines (terrible taste, by the way). Besides, Shiren was a Blood Demon, and this guy clearly wasn’t a saint.

Let her eat him. Mei Yige trusted Ane-sama Shiren wouldn’t eat *just anyone*.

...Though even if she did? Mei Yige would protect her adorable landlord sister no matter what.

Shiren stood frozen, Mei Yige’s words echoing in her hollow mind.

*So what if you eat a person?*

*Wasn’t that* her *line?* The one she’d planned to say when Mei Yige discovered her true nature and demanded answers?

*Why was Mei Yige saying it instead?!*

"Alright, alright. Want me to carry him downstairs? Need to bleed him out first?"

"*No!* This isn’t right at all!"

Shiren finally snapped as Mei Yige moved to help.

Hadi shrieked as he was dragged along: "NEITHER OF YOU ARE HUMAN?!"

Mei Yige paused, turning to Shiren with genuine confusion.

"Ane-sama Shiren... he knows both our names. We really should silence him early, don’t you think?"

Hadi: ?

Shiren: ?

Fine. Shiren admitted it.

Mei Yige was more demonic than any demon.
