Chapter 5: There's Joy in Being a Bird
update icon Updated at 2025/12/10 17:30:51

Zhou Ruiyang left school, wandering aimlessly down the street, a trace of conflict in his eyes.

Truth be told, he knew a little. Though he didn’t know where Mujin had gone, he had witnessed something unbelievable.

Back then, Mujin had suddenly hugged him and confessed her feelings, startling him completely.

But before he could react, a flash of white light enveloped Mujin right before his eyes—and she vanished instantly.

It was just like Kakarot’s Instant Transmission.

Zhou Ruiyang thought he was dreaming. He rubbed his eyes several times before confirming Mujin had truly disappeared.

He could say he’d witnessed her disappearance, but he couldn’t bring himself to speak of it.

After all, things like Instant Transmission sounded like pure fiction. If he explained it that way, the school would only suspect him of making Mujin disappear.

So he had no choice but to pretend ignorance and clear his name.

But lying left a bitter taste. Zhou Ruiyang was in a foul mood now, just wanting to walk around and clear his head.

Just as he was lost in thought, the chatter of a few middle schoolers nearby caught his attention.

"Hey, have you heard? The sparrows in our little park can dance!"

"Dance? No way. How can sparrows dance?"

"Really! They say if you give it some food, it’ll dance."

"Really? I don’t believe it."

"Then let’s go see for ourselves!"

Sparrows that can dance?

Zhou Ruiyang suddenly grew curious. He followed the middle schoolers to the park they mentioned.

At the park entrance, a few small vendors were selling packs of birdseed.

Inside, many people scattered birdseed on the ground, attracting flocks of little sparrows to feed.

However, these sparrows were highly alert. Before Zhou Ruiyang could even get close—just stepping within two or three meters—they’d abandon the food and fly away instantly.

Where were the dancing sparrows?

Zhou Ruiyang was puzzled when he heard a commotion nearby.

"That’s the one!"

"It’s so cute~"

Glancing sideways, he saw a crowd gathered around a park bench not far away.

Zhou Ruiyang squeezed through the crowd. When he saw what was inside, he was stunned.

There, a little sparrow with brown feathers, a round head, and a plump body stood boldly on a girl’s palm, rhythmically hopping back and forth like it was dancing in a disco.

It swayed its body while frantically pecking at the birdseed in her hand.

After finishing, it looked up around. Immediately, several hands reached out to it. Its round eyes scanned them, then it flew to a pretty girl’s hand, starting a new round of feeding.

"Darn it, why does this little guy only pick girls!" one middle schooler said jealously.

His classmate replied, "Think about it—if you were a sparrow, you’d probably go for girls too, right?"

"That’s true, but that’s human thinking! Sparrows wouldn’t think that way!"

The little sparrow chuckled inwardly as it ate.

Who said sparrows don’t think that way?

Mujin thought these kids were just too young.

It had been over three days since she turned into a sparrow. These three days, she had suffered greatly just to survive.

Driven by hunger, she had been forced to peck at dirty soil, scavenge unappetizing grain seeds, and even eat insects.

At night, to avoid attacks from other animals, she had to hide in tree holes and even learn to sleep standing up.

But Mujin was human at heart, possessing wisdom animals lacked.

On the first night, while sleeping in a tree hole, she felt her bird life shouldn’t be like other sparrows’. She needed to do something.

After deep thought, she finally recalled a park near her school where people often fed birds. So early the next morning, she set off for her university area.

Though her flying skills weren’t fully developed, she was a savvy sparrow.

First, she flew down the mountain on her own, reaching the highway. Then, spotting passing buses, she flew straight to the roof of one, hitching a ride.

After switching buses a few times, she arrived at this park smoothly, starting her "begging" career.

However, there were many sparrows here, not just her. Plus, her mobility was far inferior to these born sparrows, so she always failed to grab food.

But don’t forget, she was a clever sparrow.

Since her body wasn’t up to par, she used her brain.

She stopped competing with other sparrows for scattered birdseed. Instead, she danced on park benches to perform. Gradually, people noticed her moves, and many would actively come to feed her.

And when someone waved to her, she’d even jump onto their hand to show friendliness.

Sparrows are naturally wary; those that allow handling are rare. So Mujin became quite popular, turning into a little star of the park.

She even thought being a bird wasn’t so bad. Every day, she could roam freely, and when hungry, humans would feed her. No worries about studies or future, and no more disgusting tasks to do.

The System’s tasks were like main quests in an online game—she had to accept them herself, but the content was completely unknown before acceptance.

Moreover, System tasks couldn’t be skipped. Once accepted, she had to complete them. But she could choose not to accept, though that would stall her progress forever, never fulfilling her wish.

These were things Mujin used to hate. She wanted to fulfill her wish but didn’t want to do those bizarre tasks.

But now, as a little bird, she no longer had to worry about such dilemmas.

After all, what use was a rich sparrow?

Besides, her current life was quite enjoyable!

For example, right now, she was held in the warm palm of a pretty young lady, snuggling up to her cheek.

Even though she was taking advantage of the girl, the girl wasn’t angry at all—in fact, she looked delighted.

"Wow, it’s so cute~"

Mujin thought: You’re cute too!

Just then, her eyes casually scanned the crowd. Then her already round pupils widened again.

In the crowd, she spotted a familiar face.

Zhou Ruiyang!!

Seeing him, Mujin quickly spread her wings, flew out of the girl’s hand, and darted straight toward Zhou Ruiyang.

Zhou Ruiyang saw the sparrow flying toward him, and his eyes lit up.

He had just seen the onlookers bringing their own birdseed, so he ran to the park entrance to buy a pack from a vendor.

Probably the vendors here saw a business opportunity—a pack of birdseed that cost one or two yuan elsewhere was sold for ten here.

Zhou Ruiyang hesitated for a while before steeling himself to buy it. But just as he sprinkled some in his hand, he didn’t expect this friendly little sparrow to be attracted.

So he was quite popular with little animals after all.

Unfortunately, before his smile could fully bloom, the sparrow pecked him right on the nose.

"Ouch!"
