At sunset, a girl in a cotton-white strapless uniform sat on the edge of the dorm rooftop, staring blankly at the sun.
Her legs dangled, swinging back and forth in the air.
A small bag sat beside her, stuffed with a heap of neatly wrapped love letters.
Luo Yu tore a letter out of its envelope, folded it into a paper crane, and tossed it toward the sun.
It traced a shallow arc.
“In this whole massive Demon Realm, not one of them can beat that f-ing Champion.”
“A bunch of losers.”
“And those so-called noble Highborn Demons, all they do is goof off all day. Totally useless.” Luo Yu ripped open another fancy wrapper, pulled out a letter, and began reading the Demon Kind script on it.
“Dear cute and beautiful Witch, I’m the ** of the Melan family. I’ve admired your name for a long time… This weekend, would you meet me at…”
“Idiot.” Luo Yu crumpled that love letter into a ball and tossed it straight off the roof.
“Ow—!” An old professor drifting past below got beaned. “Which little brat is throwing things from up there?”
“Old geezer, seriously.” Luo Yu ignored him and kept tearing open the nobles’ love letters and invitations to Qiu Xiaoshuang.
“Hello, I’m ** of the * family…”
“Dear lady, hello. It’s long been known the Witch bloodline matches splendidly with our Dolan line…”
“How come I go out of town once and Xiaoshuang gets flooded with love letters.” Luo Yu propped her chin, looking annoyed. “I’ve gotta hustle, or those rich-born jerks will ‘capture’ her route.”
After she’d sat there a long while, Qiu Xiaoshuang finally found her. She dashed up the stairs to the roof, grabbed Luo Yu by the ear right off the ledge, and hauled her back.
“Eh?”
Luo Yu swayed, then snapped her head around. “Xiaoshuang, you came looking for me? Missed me already?”
“Luo Yu, you just got back and you pried open my mailbox again?” Qiu Xiaoshuang planted her hands on her hips, out of patience.
“I was just afraid you’d get tangled up by those birthright types, Xiaoshuang.”
“That’s none of your business, Luo Yu.” Qiu Xiaoshuang pinched her cheek in warning. “I’m the eldest of the Central Witch line. Of course I deal with outside nobles a lot. You ripped up my mail—how am I supposed to reply?”
“They’re just love letters. If you can’t reply, don’t. Besides, I told you, those guys are scumbags—the type who changes three girlfriends a day. With me, the unbeatable Luo Yu, by your side, you’re set.”
“What use are you? Can you give my family an heir?” Qiu Xiaoshuang deadpanned, then tugged her ear again. “This is between Highborn Demons. You butt in again, and you’ll be the one in trouble.”
“Ah, worldly woman.” Luo Yu let out a deep sigh. “Once I save the Demon Realm, you’ll understand where my heart’s been all along… Ow, don’t hit my face…”
Back in their dorm, Luo Yu crawled onto her bed and changed into a penguin onesie with a cut-out neckline, a little revealing.
She didn’t do much. She just stared blankly at Qiu Xiaoshuang, who sat on a cushion in the room, calmly gathering mana with a crystal ball. Luo Yu pointed and muttered, “Xiaoshuang, if you collect like that, it’ll take you forever. Do it my way…”
“Luo Yu,” Qiu Xiaoshuang snapped after being stared at too long, “are you that idle?”
“Tonight’s wellness mode.”
Luo Yu explained that she’d been ‘rewarding’ herself all day, almost to the point of collapse, and had nearly reached a saintly, desireless state.
“Good.” Qiu Xiaoshuang let out a breath. “Don’t come back and go into heat half the night. It wrecks my sleep.”
“Say, Xiaoshuang, why won’t you play with me? We could grind toge—”
“I’m a Witch, not some seduction-type monster who’ll die if she doesn’t do it.” Qiu Xiaoshuang’s eyes warned her again. “Not everyone’s as pervy as you.”
“Oh.”
Deep into the night, Luo Yu’s eyes opened in bed. She slipped out of the dorm again.
“One more thing.”
Wrapped in a gray robe, she ran downstairs, found a big iron rod, then jogged to the student mailboxes.
She pried open Qiu Xiaoshuang’s box again. After confirming there were no letters from men, Luo Yu finally opened her own.
Only a few envelopes lay inside. Most were from men she’d serviced back when she lived in a brothel as a courtesan.
They didn’t say much—just called her a dumbass and a stuck-up bitch. She ignored them.
At the very bottom was a letter from Miss Mei. She was an old prostitute who’d raised Luo Yu for many years.
“Almost forgot.” Luo Yu hurried to open it.
Miss Mei’s letter was simple: how many men she’d been with lately, how much money she’d made, and telling Luo Yu to hurry out of school and come find her.
She wrote: Luo Yu, once you graduate, hurry your ass back to the brothel. What’s a Lower Demon doing messing around outside every day? With your looks, you’ll blow up at the brothel. Plenty of nobles have wanted to buy your first time these years.
As Luo Yu squinted at the letter under the moonlight, the soft creak of a wheelchair sounded behind her.
She stuffed the letter down her pants and turned. It was the familiar Headmistress.
He rolled up beside her and showed a smile that looked awkward—and was, in fact, very awkward.
“Old geezer?” Luo Yu jumped. “Up at this hour? Not afraid of dropping dead on the spot?”
“Now now, Little Yu,” the Headmistress said kindly. “Seeing you back safe puts me at ease. By the way, did you manage to kill that Champion?”
Luo Yu shook her head and sighed. “No. I was too slow on the road. When I found the Champion, I accidentally blacked out. Next time, I’ll kill him.”
“Living to tell the tale is already good.” The Headmistress kept smiling. “Since you’re back safe, lie low at the academy. It’s better that way.”
“Why are you old geezers always grinning like that?” Luo Yu frowned, stepped up, grabbed the wheelchair handles, and pushed him for a stroll under the moon.
The air grew a little warm.
She didn’t see the curb. One careless push sent the old man with one foot in the grave flying out of the chair. “Crap—old geezer, you okay?”
“Not a fatal wound. I’m fine.”
Holding his lower back, the Headmistress stood up shakily and reached for a new topic. “I heard from Qiu Xiaoshuang you met a kind old man on the road. He took good care of you.”
“Just a self-important old geezer like you.”
Luo Yu puffed her cheeks and turned her head away, showing she was mad.
“Don’t be so tsundere,” the Headmistress chuckled.
“In short, I, Luo Yu, lost all face on this trip.” She didn’t want to revisit her shame. She lowered her head, twirled a lock of hair with her finger, her eyes shining. “The first battle—fine, call it his win. But after this…”
“You’re really going to go after that Champion again?” The Headmistress froze.
“Yeah.” Luo Yu nodded hard. “I have to kill that Champion, make my name, save countless girls, become the new Demon King, and turn this dumb Demon Realm upside down.”
