Chapter 26: The Backlash

Everything has its value and reason for existence.

Wishes or desires are among the purest forms.

So, what is my own value, or desire...?

Yuri often felt lost. She was just a patchwork being, far from pure.

Even if 'she' gave her everything, she’d never become her.

But perhaps because she’d once been human, she had something called a heart—unlike that past self.

Yet having a heart only deepened her confusion.

No direction. No future in sight.

Her journey was destined to stray from the moment she first awoke.

Emptiness. Emptiness.

When the world fell silent, only emptiness remained—an emptiness that could drive one mad!

Gluttony is a sin, the primordial sin. It can be suppressed, never erased.

Devour. Fill. Craving more, craving anything to stuff that hollow void inside...

No satisfaction. No contentment. Only greed, endless greed!

This, perhaps, was her desire? The most primal and pure desire, named Original Sin.

Even with her soul fully her own, the mark of 'Gluttony' hadn’t faded a trace!

In fact, turning from a 'doll' into a true 'human' made that greed even harder to control.

But things to fill that emptiness were so scarce.

So scarce it was almost unbearable, so scarce she longed to devour herself...

"So easily bewitched by desire, huh? No wonder you’re... a half-baked one."

In the darkness, a speck of crimson suddenly glowed.

Then...

Yuri saw herself. No, not herself!

Same crimson eyes, same exquisite face—but the girl before her evoked only an endless abyss!

Just a glance felt like your soul no longer belonged to you.

"You’re the master, not a toy. If a little power leaves you lost, you don’t deserve your name."

The girl stood still, voice icy and emotionless.

"When hungry, devour. When wanting, plunder. We’re monsters who can’t even kill ourselves—just monsters. But since you inherited us, never forget who you are."

Yuri’s pupils tightened slightly. Indescribable emotions flooded her.

"Right. You’re a demon, an immortal, a king! Our continuation and fusion. Desire’s just your toy. You’ve so much left to grow."

Yuri: "..."

...

Her lightly closed eyes snapped open. Yuri realized she’d somehow fallen asleep.

Using power, craving desire, the thrill of slaughter and devouring—all had inevitably worn on her.

If not awakened just now, she might’ve lost control and rampaged.

Though honestly, that wouldn’t matter much—just messy eating.

Staring at the ceiling for a while, Yuri murmured softly, face unreadable, "I said, I’m not... a half-baked one."

She was just... a little lost.

After all, things that brought her joy were truly scarce...

"If that’s the case, then... let’s find some fun."

She pushed up from her seat, tilted her head, and whispered.

As if answering her thought, a gentle knock came at the nearby door.

"Come in. It’s unlocked."

No sooner spoken than the door slid open.

Zuo Yuan stood expressionless in the doorway. After a long pause, he stepped inside.

"I think we need to talk seriously..."

Yuri chuckled lightly. "Oh? I thought you’d camp outside forever."

Zuo Yuan: "..."

His stiff expression only deepened her smile.

"So, what’s the topic? Breaking into a lady’s room at night isn’t elegant."

Zuo Yuan’s lips twitched.

First, it wasn’t even midnight—and you told me to enter!

What nonsense was this?

He took a deep breath, forcing down his irritation.

Yuri was provoking him. Losing control meant he’d already lost.

Shoving aside emotions, he focused on the matter. His face turned serious.

Seeing that, Yuri shrugged, bored. "Fine, fine. Spit it out. Cause or result. And... what we’ll face."

...

"Ah, this place is super fun. Coming out was totally worth it."

A simple room. Simple furnishings.

A girl in a plain dress lounged half on a wide chair. Before her, a handsome young man in butler attire knelt on one knee.

His slender fingers massaged her calf resting on his lap.

Without looking up, he murmured, "But this might anger the master."

"Pfft, my sister’s too rigid."

She blinked her azure eyes, utterly nonchalant.

"She treats me like a kid, like the whole world’s evil! Hmph, I’m an adult—and strong!"

As she spoke, she shook her jade-white wrist. A faint silvery glow flickered there.

"The master only worries for your safety..." The black-clad butler smiled faintly, trying to explain.

"Yeah, yeah, that’s why I brought you, Useless!"

She cut him off before he finished.

The butler named Useless could only shake his head helplessly.

"But real villains make things fun! Useless, you wouldn’t know—I’m bored stiff daily. Sister’s picks are all dull. Oh! Is that idiot still spying?"

She looked up at him, recalling something.

Useless kept massaging, eyes closing briefly then opening. "He’s gone."

"Ran fast. That fool made me yield. Just Anas’s second son—even his dad..."

Useless sighed inwardly. As expected... grown-up looks, childish heart.

But with a sister who sheltered her so fiercely, it made sense.

"...Hey! Are you listening?!"

No reply after her rant. She puffed her cheeks.

Useless touched his nose, smiling perfectly. "As your butler, I never miss a word. Repeat it?"

"Hmph. You know your place."
