Chapter 8: Ah, the Splendor of Youth! (I

Another bright and sunny morning saw students heading toward the teaching building of Donglin Third Middle School. Cold Night Feather and Bai Xin walked side by side among them.

"Hey, do I really have to sneak in as a spy this Saturday?" Bai Xin asked, her voice trembling slightly as she adjusted her backpack.

Cold Night Feather stared at her expressionlessly, then blew a bubble with her chewing gum. *Pop!* The burst bubble splattered saliva all over Bai Xin’s face.

"Have some backbone! You’re my sister, Cold Night Feather’s sister! Acting this cowardly just embarrasses me," Cold Night Feather said. She spat the gum into a tissue, wrapped it neatly, and tossed it into a trash can dozens of meters away. Nearby boys and girls gaped in shock.

"Uh! Look, I struggled just fighting one low-level vampire. That bat gathering must have stronger ones, right? Won’t I just be delivering dinner? Vampires must sense humans—especially virgins—really well!" Bai Xin pleaded desperately to skip the vampire party.

Cold Night Feather smirked. "Relax. I’ll prepare your disguise and mask your scent. Just treat it like a trip. You’ll even get to see who this Dark King really is." She strode ahead without waiting.

"Hey! Wait up!" Bai Xin sighed and hurried after her.

They entered the classroom. It was still early, so only a few students were present. Li Xiao Xiao sat on a desk, waving cheerfully as they approached.

Cold Night Feather gave a curt nod in greeting and took her seat.

Though sparse, the room buzzed with heated discussions—LOL, Overwatch, TV dramas, cosmetics. The topics were wildly varied. Cold Night Feather mused how much easier life would be as a guy, able to join these chats. Then again, a man prettier than most women would draw even more stares.

Deciding to find something to do, Cold Night Feather opened her desk—and froze.

"Hmph? A dead rat?" She lifted it by the tail. With a flick, the rat crumbled to ashes. "Ah, the classic drama of bullying a talented transfer student... Youth really is something."

Sighing like an old man, she pulled out several pink envelopes from the desk.

"Whoa! Love letters?!" Bai Xin gasped, startled by the thick stack on Cold Night Feather’s desk. Other students also turned curiously, some with nervous glances—likely the writers.

"You’re really popular, Cold Night Feather!" Li Xiao Xiao giggled, covering her mouth.

Cold Night Feather’s lips twitched. "I’d rather not be. These letters... ugh."

She knew she should act like an ice queen—tearing them up or tossing them. But she didn’t want to hurt the writers’ feelings. So, the "kind" Cold Night Feather (?) decided to read each one and politely reply to those signed with names and classes. After all, she had nothing better to do.

Students gradually filled the room, including Lin Mi and her group. Everyone eyed the love letters, but Ouyang Meng reacted most strongly to Cold Night Feather writing replies.

"Wow! Do you have a crush on someone here? Using replies as an excuse to secretly send a date location?"

Her reward was a big bump on the head from Cold Night Feather’s smiling fist.

"Come to think of it, there’s one gift left unopened," Cold Night Feather said, pulling out a palm-sized, neatly wrapped box.

"Eh? What’s inside? Open it, Ye Yu!" Bai Xin bounced eagerly—Cold Night Feather hadn’t even blinked. "Is it food?"

"Food, food, food! All you think about is eating!" Wang Lin facepalmed, stopping Bai Xin from grabbing the box. She turned to Cold Night Feather. "Want to open it?"

Cold Night Feather rubbed her chin habitually. "Should we find out who sent it first? Returning it might be better. It’s not good to accept gifts lightly."

Li Xiao Xiao shook her head. "No, returning it would be worse."

"Huh?" Cold Night Feather frowned, clueless about social norms. "Why?"

"You’d humiliate the giver!" Ouyang Meng blurted. "Accepting a gift doesn’t mean accepting them—just the present!"

"But why is returning it humiliating?" Cold Night Feather asked, her cute, confused expression making Bai Xin’s eyes sparkle. Wang Lin yanked her back just in time.

"...You really know nothing, do you? Did you rarely interact with people before, Cold Night Feather?" Li Xiao Xiao sighed, rubbing her forehead.

"Haha, true," Cold Night Feather admitted. "Honestly, besides family, I barely talked to anyone. You guys are practically the first people I’ve gotten this close to."

She thought hard. She’d only been close to Xiao Yunyao and Elder Lei. One was her mentor, whom she saw as a sister; the other was like a grandfather. But talking to elders wasn’t the same as chatting with classmates. Even if they didn’t scold you for being unfilial, it felt awkward.

Then there was Blazingglory, her rare "friend." Their first meeting? An earth-shattering fight. The second? Silent drinking, then another brawl after shouting "Satisfying!" That was their routine. Their only real chat happened as Blazingglory died.

So, Cold Night Feather truly had no concept of "friends."

"Wow! You sound like you’ve got stories! Tell me abou—" Ouyang Meng lunged forward but was pinned down by Wang Lin’s free hand—the other still held Bai Xin.

Recalling Cold Night Feather’s claim of coming from another world and her immense power, Li Xiao Xiao guessed she was a reclusive powerhouse. She sighed. "Think: when you give a gift, you pick it carefully, hoping they’ll like it, right?"

Cold Night Feather shook her head. "I’ve never given gifts. Well—on my enemy’s birthday, I sent a forbidden spell that wiped out his whole family. Does that count?"

Li Xiao Xiao’s eye twitched. "I guess... Did you spend ages choosing which spell to use?"

Cold Night Feather lit up. "That bastard almost killed me before I matured! Humiliated me publicly! Even tried to marry my sister, Xiao Yunyao! So for weeks before his birthday, I planned the perfect surprise. Heavenly Fire Meteor? Too quick a death. Absolute Zero? Too peaceful. Finally, I learned the Shadow Forbidden Spell—Reaper’s Embrace! Made his wife, kids, and every relative die painfully before his eyes. I’ll never forget his face... that despair and numbness."

Classmates dismissed it as game or anime talk—this was a peaceful era, after all. Magic was rare, just petty tricks; no real "forbidden spells."

But those who knew Cold Night Feather’s past felt a feral beast lurking beneath. A trace of killing intent radiated from her, chilling them to the bone, bodies stiffening. Her ferocious smile looked like a demon’s grin from hell.

"Sorry. I lost my composure," Cold Night Feather said calmly, relaxing her expression. "Didn’t scare you, did I?"

"N-no!" Li Xiao Xiao stammered, realizing her back was soaked with cold sweat.
