Chapter 8: An Unforeseen Companion

Cold Night Feather's thought was simple: sit beside Bai Xin. After all, she wasn't familiar with anyone else in this classroom and had no desire to interact with them. Only those few near Bai Xin—though she didn't want deep entanglements—they were people Bai Xin knew well. Getting slightly acquainted wouldn't hurt.

Without a word, she walked straight to the empty seat. Amid countless disappointed gazes, she said, "Teacher, I'll sit here."

Wang Chun naturally wouldn't object. He'd been instructed from above to fulfill every request of this young lady. He didn't want to offend someone who clearly had significant backing. Nodding, he said, "Alright, you can sit there."

Cold Night Feather sat down immediately.

Wang Chun noticed her desk was completely empty. "Your textbooks will be given tonight," he told her. "Until then... Wang Lin! Lend your book to Cold Night Feather during class."

"Oh!" The reply came from the chubby girl seated in front of Cold Night Feather. She was the deskmate of the bespectacled girl who'd spoken with Li Xiao Xiao earlier. She handed a red book from her desk to Cold Night Feather behind her, curiously observing if this girl had any superhuman traits.

Cold Night Feather glanced at the book. Its cover bore the large characters "Mathematics."

She flipped through it entirely. With her powerful comprehension and memory, she grasped all the knowledge after a quick skim. After all, it was high school, and Donglin Third Middle School, being combat-oriented, wouldn't teach literature too deeply. Moreover, Cold Night Feather had studied profound cultivation methods before; this was nothing worth mentioning.

While listening to Wang Chun's lecture, her mind wasn't on it. She was more concerned about a certain presence she'd sensed lurking in the school—a presence that even made her feel danger.

*(This guy seems sealed... Huh, better not meddle. Such ancient forbidden existences always have troublesome abilities. Even if his seal is loosening, it's not my concern now. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.)*

While sensing that presence, Cold Night Feather's eyes were closed, her body motionless, looking asleep. Wang Chun, who'd been watching her while lecturing, felt his face flush. He said, "Hmm, student Cold Night Feather, come up and solve this problem I just taught. Let me see if you truly have the right to daydream."

After he spoke, the students below wore dismissive expressions. The reason was simple: Wang Chun discussed content these combat-oriented students would never use. The problem involved complex calculations, combining basic knowledge intricately. Wang Chun lectured without expecting understanding. Such deliberate difficulty for the new beautiful girl enraged the young men, but they dared not voice it.

Cold Night Feather squinted at the blackboard problem—a mix of Chinese characters, Arabic numerals, and English symbols that looked like hieroglyphics to ordinary students. She nodded. "I understand." Then she stood and walked to the podium.

Cold Night Feather wasn't angry at Wang Chun's provocation. Anyone would think she'd been daydreaming from her posture. It was only human nature for him to test her.

This was unexpected for Wang Chun. He thought she'd back down after seeing the problem—it far exceeded current lessons. Then he could lecture her when humiliated and teach others a lesson. But he didn't expect her to walk straight to the podium.

Wang Chun reasoned she was just putting on a brave face. Soon, she'd likely stare blankly and write nothing.

Unfortunately, Cold Night Feather shattered his expectations. She extended her slender hand, picked up chalk, and wrote fluently on the blackboard. Wang Chun initially thought she scribbled randomly, but every step was orderly. When she finished smoothly and said in a crisp, cold voice, "Teacher, I'm done," he hadn't snapped out of his daze.

Staring at her solution—standard like a model answer, even optimized in places, surpassing references—Wang Chun felt he'd have struggled without seeing the answer. Her elegant handwriting made him feel thoroughly mocked.

But with such a big-shot young lady, he couldn't lose his temper. Swallowing his pride, he coughed. "Ahem, student Cold Night Feather's solution is very standard and effortless. Let's applaud her!"

Thunderous applause erupted. Students finally admired this new girl. They knew firsthand how difficult these subjects were. They'd heard she was incredibly powerful, able to fly at high speeds, and now excelled in literature too. How could they, failures at both, not admire her? This also marked their first victory against Wang Chun in their long-standing clashes.

As for why combat students sat obediently learning boring things: ability certification considered academic performance and conduct alongside strength. Sufficient strength but poor grades meant no promotion. If you couldn't handle studies, how could you handle cultivation or battle? Exceptions existed for the truly combat-gifted.

Cold Night Feather walked back to her seat under admiring gazes. Her heart was unmoved; she almost laughed. Of course—after feats like soloing an elite demon legion or killing an ancient evil god, such minor admiration meant little. At most, she felt relief she could finally rest.

Just then, the classroom door was knocked on.

Wang Chun opened it to see Bai Xin, and behind her, the golden-haired Lin Mi, both smiling. Bai Xin's face beamed with joy. Seeing Wang Chun, she energetically called, "Reporting!"

Wang Chun didn't stop them or ask where they'd been. Most knew Bai Xin and Lin Mi had been called away by Li Wushuang for fighting at the gate that morning. Li Wushuang had handled it; it wasn't for a mere homeroom teacher like Wang Chun to interfere.

Seeing Cold Night Feather, Bai Xin's face lit with surprise. She skipped to her seat, then gave Cold Night Feather a big smile. Cold Night Feather didn't speak but returned a cool, faint smile.

This left secretly observing students utterly astonished. Cold Night Feather and Bai Xin seemed very close—and Cold Night Feather had smiled! She'd always worn a "keep your distance" expression before.

To Cold Night Feather's slight surprise, Lin Mi sat to her left, separated by an aisle. Lin Mi nodded; Cold Night Feather gave a slight nod back.

Seeing both seated, Wang Chun wasted no words and continued lecturing.

The 45-minute class passed quickly. The end bell rang. Since it wasn't a literature class, Wang Chun didn't drag on. His lecture stopped abruptly. "Class dismissed," he said, walking out.

After class, the quiet campus turned noisy. Cold Night Feather's class was no exception. Normally, a beautiful transfer would attract a crowd. But her cold demeanor and chilling aura kept students at a distance, huddled whispering boring gossip like whether she had a boyfriend.

Bai Xin ignored Li Xiao Xiao, Wang Lin, and the bespectacled girl. She ran to the seat beside Cold Night Feather. "Hey, Ye Yu," she said, "was the change in me your doing?"

Hearing this, the trio and Lin Mi perked up their ears. Bai Xin had transformed from a nobody to someone powerful, linked to Cold Night Feather. Naturally, they were curious.

Cold Night Feather wore a mysterious smile. "Yes and no. I only provided help. Ultimately, it was your own destiny." She smiled, glancing at the Mystic Necklace on Bai Xin's chest.

This vague statement left everyone, including Bai Xin, confused. What did "your destiny" mean?

But Bai Xin didn't mind. She felt Cold Night Feather genuinely cared and wouldn't harm her. With her nearby, she'd learn more later. Well, maybe that was just a fool's intuition.

She pulled the trio over. "Ah! Let me introduce my good friends!" Pointing at Li Xiao Xiao, she said, "This is Li Xiao Xiao! We call her Beauty Li! Isn't she pretty?"

Li Xiao Xiao gave a faint smile, nodding. "Hello, I'm Li Xiao Xiao."

Bai Xin pointed at the bespectacled girl. "This is Ouyang Meng! We call her Gossip Meng!"

Ouyang Meng smiled at Cold Night Feather, then excitedly asked, "Hey! Do you have a boyfriend? How old are you? What's your abili—" Before she finished, Li Xiao Xiao, smiling awkwardly, covered her mouth. "As you can see, she talks a lot."

Bai Xin pointed at Wang Lin. "This is Wang Lin, my good friend. We call her Sister Lin!"

Wang Lin extended her chubby hand warmly. "Hello, I'm Wang Lin." Cold Night Feather extended her slender, fair hand and shook it.

From their reactions, their personalities were clear—distinct and genuine, like kids. Cold Night Feather thought so.

Unexpectedly, Bai Xin stood with a grin, hooking her arm around Lin Mi's shoulders. "Now! Let me introduce my new friend!!"
