Chapter 17: History's Uncanny Echoes

Sharon said the quest details matched the Adventurers' Guild's post but were far more thorough.

For instance, this dungeon had stood for centuries, teeming with potential monsters.

"But Lize, Dora, and I will protect you," Sharon added. "Your job is to clear any leftovers after we're done."

She pulled a parchment map from her backpack and quickly spread it on the ground.

"This shows the western forest from Village of Egramote. The 'X' marks the dungeon entrance. Beside it is a rough layout—we've explored it three times, so this run is safe. See? Three entrances must open simultaneously by attacking them fiercely. We have fifteen people. I'll split us into three groups led by me, Lize, and Dora... Thoughts?"

Sharon pointed at the entrances and looked up.

Her question was rhetorical; no one would dare object. Everything seemed perfectly reasonable.

"Then, groups. You, you, you, and Anjelit—follow me. We take this entrance."

Sharon randomly picked three unfamiliar women and Anjelit.

Next, Lize called four female adventurers. I was personally chosen by Dora.

Anjelit had suggested teaming with me, but Sharon flatly refused. She liked Anjelit; Dora liked me.

I wholeheartedly agreed. Anjelit's gaze felt destructive—I'd be torn apart and pasted on dungeon walls if paired.

When I asked to join Lize instead, both Dora and Sharon shook their heads.

I sighed in resignation.

Following Dora to the third entrance, I wondered how they'd coordinate. Suddenly, a red orb shot up from the forest.

Then a black orb rose from another direction. Dora pulled a bamboo tube from her pocket. With a *pop*, a white orb soared skyward.

When the three orbs met, they exploded with a *crack*.

This was the signal to attack.

Dora began chanting. I couldn't understand it.

Village of Egramote was a starter village for physical classes—archers, swordsmen, knights. This was my first real encounter with an external class. (The old priest didn't count; clerics existed everywhere.)

If I misheard it, it sounded like "Mama, mama, mamamia, mamamimimiya, mamia, mama, ya, mama, mimia..."

(Mishearing creates similar-sounding phrases for fun, often in lyrics.)

White light gathered before Dora. She shouted "Light Wall!" and a solid barrier appeared.

I froze.

...Weren't we attacking the entrance? Why a defensive spell?

I realized I didn't grasp this world's power system.

Then Dora lifted the light wall and hurled it at the entrance.

I was stunned.

This was a literal wall of light!

Why did it have weight?!

Was Light Wall an offensive spell?!

My suppressed urge to吐槽 burst out. I couldn't help muttering.

Dora, seeing the entrance still closed, picked up the light wall and kneaded it into a pillar...

Wait... could you reshape a light wall?!

She swung the light pillar vigorously. *Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!*

The solid light clashed with the dungeon's barrier, slowly wearing it down.

After two minutes, with a *splash*, both vanished.

The dungeon entrance was exposed.

A dark staircase descended. Visibility was only five meters; beyond that, pure darkness.

So dark.

That was my only thought.

Dora pulled out a prepared gem. Infusing mana, it glowed brightly.

After the light wall incident, this seemed normal.

We entered the desolate dungeon. The gem lit a three-meter radius. Walls flanked us; darkness loomed ahead.

Dora studied the map, then chose forward. Why check it with only one path?

We walked in pitch blackness for three minutes. No monsters.

I marveled at how clean previous adventurers had left it. Then a fork appeared.

Two paths: left and right.

"Right," I said.

Dora looked back, puzzled by my quick decision.

I pointed to a sign: "Go right! Left leads to waterfall cliff!"

"Idiot trap!" someone cursed, calling it a monster trick. I argued monsters couldn't write human text—the sign looked new. Given this world's quirks, right was definitely correct.

Still, some insisted on left.

Disagreement arose.

Dora checked the map again. "Right."

*Roar of water.* A waterfall cliff appeared.

"Hehe~" I scratched my head, playing dumb. With Dora there, they couldn't retaliate.

We backtracked to the left path.

History repeated.

*Roar of water.* Another waterfall cliff.
