Chapter 22: The Mountain Colossus
update icon Updated at 2025/12/22 12:30:02

Under the shade of a large tree lay a man. He had chestnut curls, brown eyes, a high nose, and fair skin—a classic Western face. He ignored the sharp pebbles digging into his body, utterly focused on the device in his hands. It resembled an Earth police baton, with a knob at the grip. Plain and unremarkable, it would be ignored even by a scavenger if dropped.

Yet for Sunny Corleone—and the entire Corleone Family—this baton-like object was their deepest secret. The key to overturning their fate!

Its name was "Jammer." Ordinary, but its meaning was anything but. It blocked all force fields affecting humans—especially the Sinan Family’s detection fields.

For a millennium, the Sinan Family used their signature Anomaly Power—detection—to build a vast intelligence network. Knowing their enemy and themselves, they always got intel first. They neutralized Corleone moves before conflicts erupted. Thus, the Corleones remained suppressed for centuries. What was once a rivalry had tilted entirely to the Sinans. When people spoke of Heavens Origin Kingdom’s top family, only the Sinan Family came to mind. The Corleones were mere shadows.

But now, everything could change! Blocking the Sinans’ greatest weapon—their detection—could rewrite history!

After adjusting the Jammer, Sunny let out a slight sigh.

"The family’s rise, huh…"

Many believed the Jammer would crush the Sinans. Sunny doubted it. Even if it nullified their network, it only leveled the playing field. After centuries of suppression, the Corleones still lagged in manpower and resources. Winning a real fight seemed unlikely… So why were the elders so confident?

Those old foxes wouldn’t bet everything on this tiny device. They must have another trump card—a card strong enough to overpower the Sinan Family’s strongest fighter, Sinnan Chozeng!

But with his low status, overthinking was pointless. Sunny had only two wishes now: for the Sinans to finish their business and leave; and for his companions not to do anything reckless.

Rumble—

"Huh? Thunder?" Lorraine glanced at the cloudless blue sky.

"Weird. Doesn’t look like rain—"

BOOM—!!!!!!

The deafening blast made them dizzy. Sunny and Lorraine turned toward the sound, stunned speechless. Through the billowing smoke, the distant hilltop was flattened.

—Earlier—

"Come on, Miss, don’t be upset…" Sinan Yuan comforted the gloomy Sinan Ying.

"It’s not upset. Just disappointed."

"A true强者 doesn’t dwell on setbacks. That’s real strength."

"That’s a slippery argument…"

Sinan Ying’s eyes suddenly lit up.

"I keep failing to control the power. Why not stop trying? I could work for the family—demolition, mountain blasting, bunker busting. No need to hold back then."

"It’s not that simple. Those jobs require precise calculations for directional blasting. Raw power isn’t enough."

"Then… a desk job?"

"Elder Hong complained about your written test scores last time."

"…Are you sure you’re comforting me?"

"You two at the back! Stop whispering! Hurry—we’re near the rendezvous!" Elder Hong’s voice boomed like a bell. At over seventy, he walked as fast as a young man. A fierce warrior under the previous head, he came from a minor serving family. But he braved fire and blades, his Anomaly Power—erecting protective barriers—saving countless lives. Granted the Sinan surname at thirty, his rise to elder was well-earned!

They’d reached a small hilltop. Beyond it lay the rendezvous—the main peak’s mid-slope. The path grew steep and rugged. But Anomaly Power users absorbed spiritual energy from the air, aided by Spiritual Medicine. So the group marched without collapsing. Sparse vegetation offered no cover. No monsters seemed visible—but veterans knew this was the most dangerous stretch. Local yaoshou were cunning, hiding in caves or under rocks, ready to ambush.

Sinan Ying’s squad had faced few strong monsters, thanks to Sinan Jing. Like Sinan Long, she was a detector—but far superior. A true prodigy.

"Wait. Something’s off."

Sinan Jing, silent until now, spoke. Everyone froze. If she spoke, it was life-or-death.

"What is it, Jing? Another monster?"

"Behind that cliff," she pointed to a large boulder, "there’s a huge cavity. Something’s inside. Motionless, but stay cautious."

"Can you identify it?"

Sinan Jing frowned—a rare sight. "I’m not sure. Its shape is odd. Less a whole monster, more like a giant corpse—"

Suddenly, she fell silent. She maxed out her detection field, scanning the cliff face. Her expression turned grave.

"I see… No wonder I missed it earlier. It’s not absent—it’s too big."

"Too big?"

"Behind this entire cliff, from here—" she pointed one end, "—to here." she pointed the other. "Detour now. At this size, it’s likely a—"

Thud.

A muffled thump, like a door slam, echoed from the other side.

"All units, prepare for combat!"

Everyone snapped into battle stances. No one ran—if it was what they feared, escape was futile. Better to fight!

Thud—

Another thump, followed by crackling. Cracks spiderwebbed across the cliff face.

"Ranged units, ready!" Sinan Yuan’s calm voice cut through the tension. Ranged fighters stepped forward; melee fighters flanked them.

BOOM!

The cliff exploded. Through the dust, a grotesque stone head emerged, fist raised, dull eyes scanning. It lumbered out—massive yet agile. Its entire body was stone, like a living tower radiating invincibility.

The monster’s gaze locked on Sinan Ying’s group. Hostility flared in its eyes.

"—Attack!"

Beams, gales, and grenades rained down. Explosions and shattering filled the air—no roars. The Mountain Giant—its true name—just shielded its head, retreating mechanically under the barrage.

"Elder Hong!"

"Don’t tell me what to do, kid!"

Spiritual energy surged into Elder Hong. With a roar, a massive light barrier materialized above the giant. Thick as solid matter, it descended like a crushing weight.

WHIRRR!

The barrier slammed down, halting the giant’s retreat. The ground beneath its feet cratered. Its stone legs trembled. With a crash, it dropped to one knee, arms straining upward to hold the barrier.

"Now! Melee finish it!"

Three burly warriors with heavy weapons charged. Sinan Ying blinked—and the stone head shattered.

The headless statue crashed down, shaking the earth. The Mountain Giant fell without landing a punch—not from weakness. Efficient action, perfect coordination, and timely commands sealed its fate from the start.

…Except our poor Second Miss never got to fight.

"Captain, take its core?"

"The corpse is too big. Finding the core would take hours of dissection."

"Wait!" Sinan Jing yelled.

"What?!"

"Second Miss, watch the ground!"

"Huh?"

Before Sinan Ying could react, the earth behind her split. A stone fist, wreathed in wind, slammed toward her!
