46 When’s Your Wedding Anniversary?

The couple sat upright, their backs straight as arrows, with their hands resting on their knees, much like diligent students attentively listening to a lecture in class.

Although they appear to be "ready for an interview at any moment" on the surface, they are actually very nervous inside.

As Principal Wilson lowered his head to discuss something with the dean seated beside him, Leon kept his gaze fixed forward, leaning slightly toward Roswitha as he whispered,

"Should we just go ahead and kill them?"

"Good suggestion, Dragon Slayer, but let’s not bring that up again."

"Then what do we do now? We didn’t prepare anything for this interview!"

Roswitha closed her eyes, taking a slow, deep breath before exhaling just as gently. "We improvise."

"Ahem—"

Principal Wilson cleared his throat twice. "Alright, let’s officially begin the interview."

Roswitha forced a polite smile. "Sure, Principal."

"Ah, no need to be nervous. This is the first time our academy is attempting such an interview format, so we won’t be too strict. Just relax, relax."

The couple exchanged glances without speaking.

Principal Wilson picked up a stack of papers on the table before him, flipping through them at a leisurely pace.

His first question struck like a lightning bolt from a clear sky.

"Do you remember your wedding anniversary?"

The inquiry stunned the couple into silence.

Neither of them had anticipated that the first question would almost cost them the match.

But to ensure they passed the interview smoothly, Roswitha’s brain kicked into overdrive after a fleeting moment of system crash. She quickly answered,

"Ah, of course we do! How could we possibly forget such an important day?"

Leon shot her a side glance.

Seriously, lady? We weren’t even married before having kids. Where would a wedding anniversary even come from?

Roswitha glanced back at him, subtly signaling with her eyes.

Though Leon was panicking, he still managed to interpret her silent cue.

While they didn’t have an official wedding anniversary, there was a day two years ago that held even more significance for them than any wedding could.

Roswitha: "It was in the Year 1733 of the Creation Calendar—"

Both spoke in unison: "May 25th."

On the 22nd of May 1733, Leon’s squad from the Empire’s Dragon Slayer Army launched an offensive against the Silver Dragon Clan. However, during the battle, Leon was betrayed, defeated, and captured.

Three days later, on May 25th, Leon used the forbidden "Blood Enchantment" and mated with the Silver Dragon Queen, resulting in her pregnancy.

Principal Wilson raised an eyebrow in mild surprise at the couple’s seamless synchronization.

"Just two years into your marriage, and already enrolling a child—rather early, don’t you think?"

"Indeed, Principal," Roswitha replied, smoothing her hair as she subtly exhaled a sigh of relief.

"Over the past two years of marriage, has your partner developed any bad habits or behaviors that you simply cannot tolerate?"

"None at all," Roswitha replied instantly.

Principal Wilson nodded and then turned his attention to Leon.

Leon furrowed his brow, pondering briefly before replying, "There is something."

The moment the words left his mouth, Roswitha panicked.

What nonsense is this idiot trying to pull?

A simple "No" would’ve let us breeze past this question!

Principal Wilson, however, appeared intrigued. "Oh? What might that be?"

Leon’s expression grew serious. "At home, I feel like I don’t have much presence."

"No presence?"

"Mm-hmm."

Leon elaborated, "Cooking, washing dishes, doing housework, handling tribal affairs—my wife takes care of everything on her own. There’s nothing left for me to do. In this home, it feels like my only role is to watch her rush around busily while I’m unable to help with anything."

As he spoke, Leon sighed softly before turning to look at Roswitha beside him.

"If I may, I’d like to use this interview as an opportunity to let my wife know that I also want to contribute to this household—to share some of your burden, Roswitha."

High EQ: "Help my wife share the burden."

Low EQ: "Damn, when she's stressed, she just takes it out on me! Who can handle that?"

Principal Wilson, of course, remained clueless to the subtext behind Leon’s words. Instead, he nodded approvingly after listening.

"How did the two of you get married? Was it love at first sight, or were you introduced by the clan elders?" he asked.

"Ah, well, we... um... it was love at first sight. Yes, love at first sight!" Roswitha stammered before glancing at Leon for help.

Leon quickly took over, "And then we got married on the spot, yes, we had a flash marriage."

Flash marriage?

Flash pregnancy!

She got pregnant the first time they met!

The vice principal raised a brow in mild surprise. "A flash marriage? Oh, such a swift decision must mean an extraordinary bond brought you together."

The hapless couple (with a forced smile): "Principal, your insight is unparalleled."

"And, Ms. Roswitha, what would you say is the most attractive quality about your husband?"

The most appealing thing about this guy...

Roswitha turned her head subtly, studying Leon briefly. After thinking for a moment, she began,

"His focus, his seriousness, his intelligence, his non-sleaziness, his sense of responsibility, his love for children. He rarely loses his temper with anyone."

After a pause, she added, "If I’m being more shallow, well... he’s handsome, has a great physique. Though..."

Principal: "Though?"

"Though his physical condition isn’t quite what it was before we got married, but it’s not a big problem. My husband is also skilled at alchemy, and he concocts various remedies to maintain and improve himself, don’t you, Leon?"

Leon’s mouth twitched ever so slightly.

He had thought Roswitha was finally praising him wholeheartedly for once.

But of course, in the end, she had to sneak in a jab.

"So, I’d like to take this interview as an opportunity to say something to my husband."

Roswitha extended a hand, resting it lightly on Leon’s shoulder. Then, gazing at him with affectionate eyes, she said softly, "Don’t push yourself too hard. I understand."

"You understand what?..."

Principal Wilson muffled his laugh behind his hand. This couple was certainly entertaining.

"Alright, then. It seems the two of you are quite lively in your day-to-day lives. Let’s move on to the next question: What are your plans for the future?"

The couple refocused their attention.

"Our future plans? Could you please be more specific, Principal?" Roswitha inquired.

"Ah, for example... do you have plans for a second child?"

Leon silently covered his face with one hand, waving the other at Roswitha to signal her to handle this one.

Roswitha chuckled awkwardly, "Well... we... haven’t really considered it yet. Actually, we already have two children—Noa and her twin sister. So if we’re talking about plans... well, first we’ll focus on raising these two. Then we’ll think about a second child. Right, Leon?"

As she spoke, Roswitha nudged Leon’s arm with her elbow.

"Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. What my wife said."

"So, already a family of four. That’s lovely," the principal commented.

"Thank you, Principal."

The principal proceeded to ask a series of other questions. Leon and Roswitha responded resourcefully, their answers blending lies with truths.

Toward the end of the interview, Principal Wilson proposed, "For the final segment of the interview, let’s play a ‘Truth or Truth’ game. You each get to ask the other one question you’ve always wanted to know the answer to. If the other person chooses to answer, they should give an honest response. If not, that’s perfectly fine as well."

The couple exchanged glances.

Roswitha, wishing to avoid any missteps, quickly replied, "I don’t have any questions for my husband. I know everything about him."

"Alright, then, Mr. Leon, do you have any questions for your wife?"

Leon leaned back against his chair, one hand rubbing his chin while his brow furrowed in thought.

Roswitha looked at him, wondering what he would ask.

Would he imply he wanted her to ease up on him in the future?

Or perhaps convey, directly or indirectly, his desire to revisit the Empire?

It was likely something along those lines. After all, this interview was a rare opportunity for Leon to air his grievances.

After a brief pause, Leon locked eyes with Roswitha, staring into her silver irises as he solemnly asked,

"You secretly liked that teddy bear I gave you, didn’t you?"

Roswitha froze in place.

She hadn’t anticipated Leon’s question to be anything remotely like this.

A question that had absolutely no relevance to their roles, allegiances, or past enmities.

Her pupils quivered slightly. She pressed her lips together before raising a hand to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, lowering her gaze and softly nodding.

"Yes, I liked the teddy bear you gave me very much."

Perhaps not even Roswitha herself had realized—Leon had merely asked, "Did you like it?"

But her answer was not a simple "I did."

Instead, it was—"I liked it very much."

Clap—

Leon gave a crisp clap of his hands. "Alright, I’m done asking questions."

Principal Wilson rose from his seat.

"With that, the interview concludes. I wish you a lifetime of happiness together. We’ll send the assessment results via messenger dragon to the Silver Dragon Castle tomorrow. Thank you both once again for your cooperation."
