Chapter 423. What drives the progress of humanity...?

"What do you mean?"

"What exactly do you mean?"

"Are you suggesting that all the tragedies in Acadia happened because of me?"

Unlike Merka, Turing is the more emotionally sensitive type. So when she hears the word 'backdrop,' she always inexplicably panics, afraid she has done something wrong again. She knows she's definitely not as strong as Merka, so she always takes the initiative to question the person asking her questions. She's actually much more fragile than she appears.

"No... Turing, you've misunderstood me."

Backdrop stood up from his seat, opened the cabin door of the fishing boat as he spoke. He waved to Turing, gesturing for her to follow him.

"I mean, you've taken on the burden of this hope on behalf of all of us."

"All the pain of the whole of Acadia is on your shoulders, you're like a mythical hero. I'm very grateful to you."

Backdrop's words were gentle, his tone submissive, his actions gentlemanly, like a herbivore male student similar to Prometheus and Merka.

But this did little to calm the growing restlessness in Turing as she followed behind him.

"Hero... You call me a hero, but why choose me?"

"I'm not at all capable, Merka would be a better choice."

Turing obediently followed behind Backdrop.

The more she talked with Backdrop, the more she realized she was like a very young child next to him. She knew so little, her knowledge was shallow, even her temperament was like that of a child, very prone to temper tantrums.

【Clearly, my wishes are very small, my desires are also very small.】

【Why me to do this thing...】

"Merka can't bear so much pain."

"Only you can. You two are two sides of the same coin, haven't you noticed?"

After hearing these words from Backdrop, Turing fell silent gradually.

She knew Backdrop was right, but she couldn't connect herself with such noble people at all.

Because of her, Theresa, Elizabeth, and many other innocent people around her had died. Now she was being told that all the pain she had endured was because she had taken on the hope of an entire nation, how could she accept that?

Backdrop walked ahead of Turing, as he gradually entered the island, filled with twisted and misencoded black curtains, his figure gradually transforming from human form into a string of shadows.

As he turned, standing on the other side of the black curtains, looking at Turing.

His body as black as the curtain, like a slight ripple rising in the center of the black curtain.

"Near the end of a story, I always think back to the beginning of the story."

"Now, the once lush resources hidden under Acadia, which Eve used to be proud of, are almost depleted."

"When you see these errors on this island, you'll understand; I have very little energy left. I can't even simulate an island properly."

"Not enough energy means I have to fall into slumber from time to time, and I often can't maintain contact with aside."

"Turing, you want me to help you defeat Beezelbub. That's simple."

"But it's up to you to finish the story."

"I'll use the prophecy window to predict some future events for you, do you want to see it?"

Backdrop finished speaking, reaching out his hands and grabbing something in the air.

Countless layers of the world materialized in front of Turing like layers of bookshelves on a bookcase, dizzying and overwhelming.

At that moment, Turing finally understood what she was anxious about.

"No... wait..."

She clutched her chest in discomfort.

She was feeling palpitations for the impending truth.

"If we are defeated by them, will Merka die?"

After a long silence, Turing asked.

"Yes, undoubtedly."

Backdrop nodded gently.

"Then I will win."

Turing looked up at the sky for a moment, then spoke.

"Hey, mister."

"You say the world is cyclical... but is it really?"

"How do you explain the underground oil? How do you explain our Acadia?"

"I think, after the tragedies, we always accumulate something."

"Even though right now all this pain seems meaningless..."

"But one day... one day we can rely on these accumulations to reach a shore without sorrow."

"Besides, measuring heroes by success or failure alone is too shallow."

"Even if the ending repeats, it doesn't mean it's meaningless."

"Just... like me and Merka. When we're together, at least we live happily, right?"

After considering for a while, Turing gave her answer to Backdrop.

"Hahaha!"

Upon hearing Turing's response, Backdrop paused for a moment, then burst into laughter.

"Why are you laughing?"

Uncertain of what to make of Turing's answer, she blushed and asked Backdrop.

"Nothing, I overthought it."

"After all these years, I still haven't figured out what humans are thinking."

"Human beings, they can survive without grand narratives."

"Turing, you're a true human."

Backdrop clapped his hands, turned around and walked toward the dark within the black curtain.

Turning away, he waved to Turing.

"Alright, let me help you then, shall we?"

"Please wait in the cabin of the fishing boat for now, I'll be back."

Watching Backdrop's silhouette fade away, Turing suddenly felt a bit anxious.

She quickly called out to Backdrop.

"Hey, mister, wait!"

"Is it embarrassing to decide the fate of a clan for a boyfriend?"

Upon hearing Turing's words, Backdrop didn't look back but continued walking into the darkness.

Although his figure had gradually disappeared from Turing's view, his voice resonated more solidly in her mind.

"No, absolutely not embarrassing, I'm serious."

"What supports the long-standing progress of humanity is not rational thinking."

"It's romantic love, child."
