You in My Eyes

People may rejoice when they are confessed to, but not necessarily feel genuinely happy for falling in love with someone.

Almost everyone desires to be loved, to enjoy the nurturing feeling of being cherished by others; however, liking someone is different. It is not about being loved, but about loving someone from one's own perspective.

Receiving a gift from someone else is easier than giving something to others with your own hands. People may be stingy in giving, whether it is tangible or intangible.

"Like" and "love," these two emotions are intangible. No one has ever seen anyone walk on the street selling these two things by weight. It is because these emotions are not like coins that can be easily thrown to any beggar on the street.

Thus, there are people who find it especially difficult to pour their own feelings onto others, let alone giving them away. In this aspect, those naturally affectionate individuals have it slightly easier.

For instance, in the Inran Empire, most men and women express their love like forests. Each time they confess, they speak cheesy words to their "true love." They can have many targets for their confessions since they can offer and share their love with many. But has anyone seen a forest without tall trees?

Ye Chuxue, however, is a different case. She has only one "tree" to offer, and the rarity of the "love" she gives is incomparable even to an oasis in the desert.

After being "confessed" to, she once believed she could give her feelings to Wang Xiaole for a brief moment. This thought originated from a momentary impulse. Shortly after the temperature in her mind dropped for a few seconds, this impulse was rationalized.

That is why she asked Flora to convey the message of "give me some time to reply." During that period, she was sure she had a certain fondness for Wang Xiaole. However, from the start of their dates until now, Ye Chuxue has never had a single moment of an accelerated heartbeat. This lack of reaction made her strongly question the initial thought she had and wonder about the nature of her fondness. Could it be that the fondness was merely a form of gratitude?

Ye Chuxue couldn't help but think so. The first confession by the opposite sex, acknowledging her charm as a girl for the first time, made her uncontrollably excited due to lacking similar experiences in the past. This excitement generated an illusion of liking someone based on the impulse.

Its essence might not be a significant emotion worth concerning about, just a silent gratitude towards the confessor.

The longer the dating period, the more Ye Chuxue's assumption seemed to be true. As she felt she was getting closer to the truth, a game named after a traditional activity officially began!

Men were arranged in ten rows in the center of the square, with taller ones in the front and shorter ones at the back, standing on stools like students taking graduation photos to compensate for the height difference. The numerous staff, already prepared, formed four lines, surrounding the men.

The staff members were unmasked; from an onlooker's view, due to their intentional blockage, everything below their heads was covered. In the eyes of the women at a distance, everyone had the same height due to the human obstacles, making it impossible for them to see who was standing on a stool.

Without being able to come closer, the women couldn't know who utilized props and who was naturally tall.

The distinguishing feature of "height" was deliberately concealed by the organizers.

Relying on clothing to differentiate was even more impossible. Besides the masks, the organizers provided identical clothing, hats, and instructed all participants to wear clothes over, and wear dark hats.

With the skin's color appearing less obvious under the influence of clothing colors and surrounding light, lovers would find it hard to identify each other unless they came closer. The hats further covered various hair colors and styles, making it impossible for women to recognize their partners based on the most apparent features.

This was how couples could enjoy the game.

People in love, more or less, care about their mutual understanding. What is mutual understanding? To put it in a mystical way, it's a kind of psychic connection between you and the other, sounding more incredible than magic.

Many couples participating in the game hoped to prove their love to each other by recognizing their partners.

But in reality, unless one was completely sure, it was not advisable to attempt this game lightly.

When the sound of "start" spread through magic, the women entered the phase of "finding people."

Afterward, they would become the ones to be found. For now, finding their lovers among the crowd was the top priority.

One confident girl in the "mutual understanding" held after circling the center once, raised her fingers and pointed at a figure in the crowd. As a response, the pointed person tilted his head. In a situation where making noise was not allowed, this reaction was the only way to convey a message: "Girl, you've got the wrong person!"

The girl's attitude was praiseworthy. Despite the first failed recognition, she didn't feel discouraged and promptly pointed to another figure shortly after.

There was no limit to the number of guesses, but there was practically no couple who could find each other through sheer determination.

For example, after repeatedly mistaking several times, a man in the lineup finally couldn't bear it and immediately raised his hand to forfeit. Then, he walked out of the lineup. After returning the mask to the staff, he left the scene without looking back while holding his girlfriend's hand.

"Why give up? Give me a few more chances, and I promise I'll find you."

"Alright, let's forget about this, and head home now."

His feelings were understandable to many male compatriots. After all, being mistaken several times by someone you like was undoubtedly a difficult experience.

The psychological resilience or "anger value" of the couples made the "determination recognition method" theoretically feasible. However, practically speaking, there were hardly any men (or women) who could tolerate their partners making mistakes more than seven times.

Of course, some managed to succeed by sheer luck on the first try.

But, generally, most people made mistakes once or several times.

Unlike the girls around who could make identifications from the beginning, Ye Chuxue's actions seemed much slower. While walking around the square, she saw a few silhouettes that looked like him. She narrowed down her search range immensely, yet couldn't eliminate the "counterfeits" further and link the only possibility to the "real him."

The reason was simple: without hearing his voice or seeing his appearance, she couldn't identify him among the tall men. From her perspective, without showing the internal or external traits, all men looked the same to her.

She still didn't know Wang Xiaole enough. Perhaps if it weren't her there, the situation might have been different. If it were Bai Meow, she would borrow clothes previously worn by "big brother" from a certain big sister. After sniffing the clothes and relying on her sense of smell, Bai Meow would find "big brother." If it were Lucia, she would identify each person's "element of love" purely through her eyes (how?). The one with the highest concentration was undoubtedly the "dear"!

If it were Isabella, she would observe at first sight, memorize each man's standing posture, and then through this screening method, find the one who matched the master's stance and consider him as the true one.

If it were Cai, she would simply rely on intuition to distinguish. This Holy Maiden could even instantly tell whose scalp a fallen hair on the ground belonged to; after the correct identification, Cai would somewhat feel regretful, unable to resist thinking: "If only I had purposely made a mistake, I could have faced blame and ridicule when I got home, which feels comfortable..."

For Wang Yafu, he would strike a handsome pose, recall the experiences of living together with his big brother, and as a younger sibling, Wang Yafu possessed many overwhelming advantages. He could easily discover who his brother was from the longest period of mutual company.

Among these five individuals, whether in the recognition or identification position, no one would likely make a mistake.

But it was uncertain with Ye Chuxue; at her current stage with Wang Xiaole, she still had a certain gap from those experts.

She was very aware of her own situation, knowing she was likely to make a mistake. Therefore, she felt a strong aversion to the act of recognition.

She contemplated: If she were the counterpart, how would she feel if her date mistakenly identified her? No need to think too much—it would undoubtedly be quite unpleasant, right?

Unlike the appearance of a delinquent girl, her thoughts were unusually delicate, and she could be excessively sensitive about certain matters. She genuinely believed that instead of making a mistake, even once, it was better to give up the search from the start!

She feared making errors, not the outcome itself. In fact, Ye Chuxue worried that the result would reveal certain hard-to-accept realities to her.
