Chapter 3: Dark Area (2)
update icon Updated at 2025/10/21 16:10:12

He was like a child of man and ghost, with the appearance of a human but possessing god-like power and a terrifyingly monstrous demeanor!

Not even a final scream was able to escape; all that remained was the silver-haired man sensually sucking the remaining blood on his fingers, responding satisfactorily into the intercom.

"What a delicious taste... Greedy humans, we will be your future masters!"

The once white clouds and blue skies were now covered in dark clouds with lightning flashing, as if lamenting the injustice of this world, with the torrential rain falling incessantly for nearly a month with no sign of stopping.

Lunchtime had arrived, and the rain continued to beat against the rooftops. Fortunately, the school had skylights to shield the students from the rain, allowing them to leisurely make their way to the cafeteria and convenience store to satisfy their hunger with bread, noodles, or rice.

No one paid attention to the subtle, almost imperceptible tremors on the ground, at most grumbling about the damn persistent foul weather.

"Tell me, how did Juxi end up in the basement next to the body of the Evil Entity, or should I say, the body parts?"

Yukari leaned in close to me, making a comical gagging gesture.

"Juxi..."

"Yeah?"

Yukari seemed to have reached a conclusion after a long contemplation.

"Would you like to join the S-Class?"

"What did you say?"

I, who was about to resume sleeping, paused and scratched my ear in a puzzled manner.

"Can I also join your S-Class? Thank you very much!"

But is this kind of pre-arranged behavior really acceptable?

"Don't thank me. You must be an adapter of the Phantom God, right? Your enhanced body strength beyond that of ordinary people is proof that you are a contractor."

I gently touched my forehead, and indeed, it still hurt...

"Yes, but what does that have to do with joining the S-Class?"

Things were not getting clearer as I pretended to be confused by the questions, furrowing my brow.

Because I couldn't let others know that I had already figured out that the school harbored a big secret.

"Hehe, no matter how high you score, you can't get into the S-Class, pity it doesn't really mean much!"

With a cold and indifferent remark, Yukari continued to ignore the matter while tending to her hair. The expectations of the girl sitting across from me were dashed, and after hesitating for a while at the dining table, she finally lifted her head to face my troubled expression.

"The S-Class is essentially to cultivate adapters who synchronize with the Phantom God. The so-called high salary comes at the cost of being willing to sacrifice your life at any time."

High salary?!

After observing the two clueless young girls by my side, I made a firm decision after much consideration.

"...I agree!"

The Evil Entity, a digitalized composite body of human psychological states and personalities, capable of emotions and desires, is an extremely pathological existence in society!

"Yukari, what?"

Juxi felt a bit tired, but...

I really hated having this dream. Juxi, who had spent some time in his sleep, woke up again, receiving a gift from Yukari in his dream, a gaming console.

"I hate nightmares!"

On the edge of the table where my left hand was, there was a brand-new black gaming console, indicating that the earlier events were not a dream.

Rainwater outside was beating heavily against the window, with the sound of rain mixing with some faint explosions... Explosions?!

The lights in the living room downstairs had been turned off at an unknown time, leaving only the glow of the TV screen. Where did Yukari go?!

"The TV has no signal...?"

Boom!!

Before Juxi could finish his sentence, a deafening thunderstorm roared outside like the God of Thunder, with heavy rain escalating along with the fierce winds.

"...It feels strange to be alone in the house with Mom and Dad overseas for so long."

He grabbed a can of soda from the fridge and chugged it down as if nothing had happened, casually flipping through the channels with the remote control.

Many entertainment programs on the TV, including the skit I liked, were now just static on the screen. Feeling helpless, he thought of turning off the TV.

It was already two or three in the morning. Where could Yukari be?

Before shutting off the TV, Juxi lay on the sofa, looking out at the pouring rain through the glass door. His fingers fumbled for the power button on the remote control in the dark night.

"Hmm, not the remote control?"

Differently, Juxi found a newspaper that Yukari had just received this afternoon, and picked it up out of boredom. He held up the new newspaper emitting a scent of paper, and lazily read a few lines under the dim light of the TV.

"Today, our city has experienced multiple poisoning incidents. The virus is unusually tricky, and as of now, the military has deployed special police to execute nearly 2000 infected individuals... In addition, until the situation is resolved, the government advises all citizens to avoid going out!"

"Pfft!"

After reading this paragraph, even Juxi couldn't help but quip.

"Not go out? Does that mean no work or school, and let the government take care of us?"

Juxi had no patience for this kind of boring newspaper, considering that his sister was a super old-fashioned person.

Hehe, this gradually reminded Juxi of the past—when his mother left, on a night just under a month ago...

"Hoo~hoo~hoo... Ugh!"

As Juxi drifted into slumber on the sofa, he was still eagerly anticipating his father returning home from work, just like he always did, but ended up accidentally falling asleep on the sofa.

"Xi!" His father, Shinji, came to the sofa and nudged Juxi, "The day is over, go back to your room and rest."

"Not yet, Dad. It's your birthday tonight, remember?"

Saying this, Juxi excitedly picked up the gift box for his father's birthday with both hands. However, his father didn't show any sign of taking it, just smiled and shook his head.

"I'm sorry... I appreciate it, but... I'm really tired today, sweetheart."

As his father responded to Juxi, his words seemed somewhat bitter.

He felt that it was his responsibility that he hadn't taken care of Mom properly and hadn't provided a complete family for his son.

Living outside the city, Juxi's family hardly paid attention to what was happening in the city, although they had heard some discordant explosion sounds in the distance... Could something be happening in the city center?

The more Juxi thought about it, the more worried he became. So, he hurried down the hallway to Yukari's room.

...What on earth had happened here?!

Yukari's room was already in a mess, with tables and chairs seemingly smashed on purpose, as if it had been invaded by some armed group.

"What's this?"

As Juxi stepped inside, he immediately stepped on an unidentified metallic object by his feet, and bent down to pick it up.

Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a mark carved with a double-headed eagle, which seemed familiar from somewhere...

It looked like the emblem of some foreign organization. Why would they take Yukari sister?!

He, who had always considered himself a child, had long been stunned by the messy scene. It seemed they had been gone for a long time. Were the Alliance soldiers just idling around?

Juxi immediately broke out of the door and was stunned by what he saw!

The torrential rain showed no signs of stopping, but the streets were already bustling with pedestrians fleeing in all directions.

"Hey, why are you standing there?"

Among the passing pedestrians, a somewhat kind-hearted old man paused briefly at my front door and then ran for his life.

"Escape... Where to escape to?"

Feeling a bit dejected, Juxi returned to the house. The initial sense of fear was immediately replaced with desolation.

Everything became indifferent to him. For the first time, Juxi thought of death, not even caring why the people outside were fleeing!

Where does the future lie? The answer lies only in my hands!

After catching his breath...

"Fine!"

He began to busy himself inside and outside the house. He did not intend to escape with others but instead brought some spare wooden planks, a hammer from his father's basement workbench, and some push pins originally used to secure drawing boards.

"At least I hope these will give me some peace of mind... Of course, it would be best if this is just a nightmare!"

His father worked in the art industry, so in the small dark room where he often worked, there were many canned foods and a generator that could be powered at any time.

"My cell phone... Where's my cell phone?"

Juxi hastily took out his phone and called Yuanhui. By now, the TV signal began to show signs of recovery.

"... The Alliance government ordered the city to be sealed off three hours ago, and all citizens who leave the city are requested to undergo security checks unconditionally!"

Just then, a deafening blast came from outside the windows, followed by the sound of broken glass from the second floor.

Bang!

The door was suddenly kicked open, and Juxi saw Yuanhui coming directly from the entrance hall, holding a shotgun.

"Juxi, where are you?"

"Yuanhui, is that you?"

Juxi emerged from behind the sofa where he had been hiding, seeing Yuanhui waving at him, occasionally looking outside.

The screams from outside grew louder, and both Juxi and Yuanhui dared not stay here any longer, just grabbing some food and a flashlight and quickly leaving.

Honestly, Juxi had not initially intended to leave, but staying here meant uncertainty about how long it would remain safe.

Everything happening in the city would soon be in the past, and... all we could do was quietly wait for the final judgment!

(Ten minutes later)

All they could do now was wait quietly. They had just escaped from a dangerous place, or rather, the entire car had been completely totaled.

Inside the car, Juxi slowly woke up, with Yuanhui calling out, "It's okay!"

"What?"

Yuanhui rushed over and said to Juxi.

"Oh my, your prediction was spot on. By the way, are we all going to die here?"

"Who knows?"

I woke up in an area quite far from the city center.

"Things have gotten serious now," Juxi said, "these little bugs are more powerful than wild oxen."

"Yeah."

Juxi nodded in agreement.

"This is absurd! How can we possibly kill them?"

"Let's head back to the outskirts of the city and discuss there," Yuanhui grabbed Juxi's arm and was about to stop a car on the roadside, "yes, I have a feeling this place is not safe for long."
