Chapter 9: Black Mist

"Reporting to headquarters, this is Special Team A. Our missile system is unable to effectively damage the enemy. Requesting immediate support from headquarters!!"

In the thundering skies, dozens of armed helicopters moved slowly in the air, but the shadows behind them were speeding forward at an astonishing pace.

"Hello, headquarters, we are in dire situation, support troops... Aahhh!!"

"Team... Team?"

Headquarters could no longer contact the frontline armed personnel. The bearded commander of the Allied forces took a sharp breath as he hung up the phone.

Sweat trickled down his forehead like a flowing stream, even dripping onto the table.

He could not believe it, just placing the radio down in dismay, he muttered to himself, "This can't be?!"

There are only two things in the world that are truly terrifying, one is us humans, and the other is a higher existence than humans - gods!

When humanity’s most powerful nuclear weapons fail, what else can we do? Just sit and wait for death?

However, humans, wiser than the gods, awaken ancient divine beasts at a great cost and bestow their divine abilities into armored robots for self-preservation.

Unlike ordinary mech robots, those with divine armor are war gods blessed with divine power!

Armor with the power of war gods is invincible and can even slay deities.

The first-generation attached exoskeletons were directly attached to the human body for control. Unfortunately, all those operators perished, some even blown into a mist of blood and ashes.

The tragic incidents occurred because early humans had a mistaken understanding of the power of deities.

After many failures, a new generation composite war god was finally created, known as the Phantom God.

"Phantom God test unit one, commence combat testing, the hunt begins!"

In a state of extreme cold, the snowy wilderness in the deep mountains suddenly emitted violent engine roars.

Mechanical-like sounds and skeletal structures entwined around my limbs and head.

"Transferring brainwaves to central hub, transfer complete, synchronizing with pilot's brain nerves, synchronization complete!"

"Prepare, now initiating countdown, ten, nine, eight... three, two, one!"

In the dark depths of the base, a blue light suddenly rose, illuminating the dark tunnel. Flocks of black wings were quickly engulfed in raging fires.

"Hiss hiss hiss!!"

Roars pierced through the overcast sky, and I tightly pushed the controls forward.

"Boom rumble!!"

Two cannons rose from behind the Phantom God, and within the head of the machine, all superweapons were activated against the dense black wings as a new wave of attacks unfolded.

The black wings were beings not belonging to this world, known as fallen angels from the surface world.

"Little princess, with your graceful dance, calm the tormented souls of these sinful beings!"

Guiding me through the battle was the technical advisor Vicorc, standing by my father’s side, teaching me how to use the Phantom God in combat.

Ugh, how loathsome this world is...

I unleashed all my resentment and fury upon these so-called "angels," turning them into ashes.

"Ah, Princess, the flames are burning so fast they're about to consume themselves. Well, let's just call it a day for today's battle against the hellish monsters!"

The man named Vicorc pressed the purification system button, and in an instant, the icy arena was completely erased by a massive shockwave.

Clap, clap, clap...!

The bald man, who is my father Edward, suddenly appeared by my side. With two officers by his side, he clapped and said, "Great progress. You've become much stronger since you first arrived here, and your control over the Phantom God has improved. But, this is far from enough... Take some time to reflect by yourself."

I needed some quiet time to wash away the noise brought by modern society. As I faced the changes in the world, memories of my past life, my mother, and stepfather flooded back... I dreamt of that day.

A girl lay on the bed, shivering, unable to remember the past but feeling something slipping away from her memory. Yet, she vaguely remembered having a younger brother, a stepbrother who held a special place in her heart.

"Yukari, be good and listen to your mom after you return to your dad. Take care of her, okay?"

Father bid farewell to me and mom with a gentle smile. I knew this might be the last time, with no chance of him returning.

"Dad..."

"Hmm?"

I asked, but neither mom nor dad had any idea. I was almost giving up hope.

Since meeting my biological father, everything... changed!

Another sleepless night. I couldn't go on like this, staying up late, sometimes not even bothering to sleep and diving into battles on my game console all night.

The next day at school, I would doze off, and eventually, the teachers recommended me to take a break. Slowly, my classmates began to isolate me... No, it was more like no one knew me from the beginning.

The first day of school...

"Miss, we have arrived."

With the help of the butler grandfather, I arrived at a school I had never seen before. It was a place where I was deeply impressed by the advanced technology, unlike the old, dilapidated school buildings back home.

As soon as I got off the car, I was surrounded by students. Both boys and girls were staring at me like a rare species, making me feel quite embarrassed.

"Butler Grandpa, who are they...?"

"They are here because of your status as a member of the Elena Empire group. Your father's reputation is illustrious..."

Before I could say anything, he started praising my father's greatness and the grandeur of our group.

"Um, how did they know we are from the Elena group?"

Finally, I voiced the question that had been weighing on my mind. Getting surrounded like a monkey without any reason was making me uncomfortable.

"Perhaps it's your behavior that made them feel strange?"

Nearly fooled by the grandfather, as you can see, this is a prestigious private school only for the children of nobles, established by Elena as a base to train armed personnel.

Indeed, it's not just a school, more like a military base disguised as an academy.

From the moment I entered the school gates, soldiers clad in black armor held a batch of cutting-edge weapons and equipment developed by Elena, instilling both a sense of security and a hint of danger among the entering students.

"It seems I have committed some grave offense after all."

"It's not your fault, Miss!"

The worried butler inspected me from head to toe, making sure my pure white school uniform and the youthfully vibrant blue skirt met the school's standards.

"In fact, it's not surprising that they will know your identity."

It was only then that the butler introduced the vehicle that had brought us here. Once I got on board, I noticed that this car's design was unlike any other, with a body composed entirely of silver and sky blue cracks. These cracks were said to exist to release EMP energy.

"Indeed, this vehicle is quite different from the usual."

"Yes, the vehicles of the Elena Empire are not comparable to those low-class luxury sports cars."

The butler handed me my backpack and instructed me, "Remember, everything you do symbolizes the glory of the Empire."

In the butler's eyes, there was only Elena's glory. I cooperated with him wholeheartedly because I, too, had become an empty shell with nothing but an outward appearance.

Thus, amidst the warm and grand welcome of everyone, I stepped into this brand-new academy.

"Yukari, I am truly sorry for you and your mother, I will make amends."

Just as I was about to remove the dark circles under my eyes at the dressing table, a stranger burst into my room.

"I know you hold resentment towards me, including taking you away from a basically perfect family was my mistake, so..."

"Hurry...!"

I grabbed the younger one's hand, ready to leave this place of turmoil.

"What's going on here?"

He exclaimed as he looked at the floor that had already been stained blood red.

"Don't worry about that, just run before that old man notices!"

Facing the blizzard head-on, I tried to shield my cheek with my hand as much as possible, so the white expanse in front of me wouldn't obstruct my view.

"Your performance truly amazed me," Edward clapped as he jumped off the returning spacecraft.

That man actually turned back!

"What do you want from us?"

Being on the side of the Alliance, I had no idea what this third party, not aligned with any force, would do to us. The lack of organization and control on their part made me feel a tinge of fear.

"It's nothing, I just found two geniuses with an extraordinary sync rate with the Phantom God, and I have the idea of making them mine. You don't think that's too much, do you?"

Edward shivered, then signaled his subordinates to drag the two of us out of the snowy wasteland.

"Join our team, humans are only creatures who would kill their own kind for immediate gain. We are facing the collapse of a world's rules, and the only outcome for humanity in this situation is destruction!"

"Hmph, I'd rather not join..."

"I suggest you keep your mouth shut before I change my mind."
