In the year 2052, the once-worldwide sensation of a VR game, The Extradimensional World (TEW for short), was finally on its last legs. TEW had been the first full-scale global VR game co-developed by multiple countries, and it had run brilliantly for twelve straight years since 2040. It had watched countless newbies grind their way into veterans, its playstyles branching into all kinds of wild meta.
But waves keep crashing on the shore. During the decade plus that TEW was online, a brand-new title, built on top of TEW’s foundations, had been created. The moment it launched, it stole away ninety-eight percent of TEW’s player base. The remaining two percent stayed behind with a “whatever, I’ll stick around” attitude, just seeing things through.
Because there was still a bit of time left before the servers of the new game opened, people could use that gap to wrap up whatever unfinished business they had in TEW.
“You’re really gonna abandon our faith?”
Inside a guild base in TEW’s world, Yue Wu slammed his palm on the table, glaring angrily at the few others present.
“Moonless, you saw it too. It’s not that we’re dumping TEW. TEW itself is at the end of the road. We’re just going with the times.”
A burly man with a knight class sat back in his chair, arms folded across his chest, eyes closed. He shook his head as he spoke.
“So you’re just gonna abandon me and our faith?”
Yue Wu shot back.
“We can start over together in the new game. It’s not like we’re going our separate ways.”
A summoner girl spoke up.
“That, I can accept.”
Yue Wu nodded, satisfied.
“I seriously don’t get how you managed to win Feifei over in-game.”
The summoner girl shook her head.
“Since there’s still time, how about we go—”
Before Yue Wu could finish, the knight cut him off.
“Nope. It’s already pretty late where I am. I’ve gotta go pick my daughter up from kindergarten. I’m logging off. See you all in the new game.”
With that, the knight logged off.
“Me too, I need to work on my graduation thesis.”
The male mage logged off as well.
“I’ll also—”
…
Guild members went offline one after another, until only Yue Wu and the summoner girl were left.
“Wenwen, how about we—”
“No. It’s my eleventh birthday today, I’ve got plans. I’m logging off too.”
The summoner girl shook her head.
“Then happy birthday, Wenwen.”
Yue Wu froze for a moment, then wished her a happy birthday.
“Thanks, foot-scratching uncle.”
The summoner girl teased him.
“I’m only thirty-one, I’m not an ‘uncle’ yet. And I don’t have a habit of scratching my feet.”
Yue Wu protested.
“Alright, I’m off. The guild leader role has been transferred to you. All our consumables and mats are in the guild warehouse. You can take everything. You’re gonna keep playing anyway, right?”
“Tsk, tsk. All that stuff adds up to at least several hundred million, maybe even more.”
“Yep. If you can sell everything in the warehouse, you’ll be instantly rich.”
“Worth a try.”
“Then good luck. I’m off, bye.”
“Mm, bye.”
After saying goodbye to the last member, Yue Wu sat alone in his chair. Alone in every sense. His mind drifted back over twelve years of memories in this game, scene after scene, until all of it felt like it had been washed away, leaving only him behind.
“Enough reminiscing. Waste of time. I should empty out the guild warehouse first.”
“Then head to Demon King Ruins, farm the boss a bit and level up. I only need two percent more exp to hit 500, the cap.”
Yue Wu emptied the guild warehouse, shoving every item into his own backpack. Watching his bag slots fill up with consumables and materials, every single slot stacked at 9999+, he couldn’t help feeling absurdly happy. This was the richest he’d ever been in his entire gaming career.
Most of TEW’s world map was modeled after Earth’s geography, with extra zones added later by player submissions. Demon King Ruins was a dungeon on the 100th floor of the eastern underground city on the Euro Continent. There was only a single boss there, a clone formed from the Demon King’s leftover energy, and its level wasn’t that high.
TEW had updated the max level to 500, but the devs never got around to releasing new maps. Maybe they figured there was no need; just bump the level cap and be done with it. Anyway, none of the mobs or bosses in TEW went above level 500. At most, they were level 490. Back when the cap was still 490, that was the true max. The later 500 cap was just there to make players grind exp day and night.
“Ding~! Congratulations to player ‘Moonless’ for being the first to reach the max level of 500.”
“Ding~! Congratulations to player ‘Moonless’ for being the first to reach the max level of 500.”
“Ding~! Congratulations to player ‘Moonless’ for being the first to reach the max level of 500.”
The second the Demon King’s clone vanished, Yue Wu leveled up. His heart pounded with excitement as he bent down to pick up the boss drops.

“I’m actually the first one to hit 500! I’m a freaking genius! Hahaha~”
“Rewards, rewards, rewards.”
Finding out he was the first max-level player, Yue Wu was both thrilled and eager to see what kind of prize he’d get for hitting cap.
But after waiting a few minutes, he realized the system announcements weren’t following the script in his memory. No reward notice. Just silence.
“What the hell? No reward for an achievement like this? Is this a bug?”
“Calling GM.”
“No response? GM, answer me!”
“Damn it! What is this crap? No rewards, no nothing—why am I even still playing? I’m done. Logging out. Log out!”
After several failed attempts to contact a GM, Yue Wu decided to give up and log off. But when he tried to call up his personal menu, nothing appeared. No matter how he tried, the interface refused to show.
In that instant, every nerve in his body went taut.
“No way. Don’t tell me this is just like in those web novels?”
“Did TEW turn into a death game?”
“That… shouldn’t be possible, right?”
Unwilling to accept it, Yue Wu kept trying to call out the menu. But no matter how he shouted for the interface, it never appeared.
Over an hour later, Yue Wu finally gave up. By then he’d completely calmed down. For one simple reason: in those first few minutes, two anomalies had already told him that the place and world he was in right now were real.
Guuuuurrrgle~~~
In TEW, there was no such thing as a hunger bar dropping to a point where your stomach actually growled. Bleeding also wasn’t a thing in the game. Add the very real pain on top of that, and Yue Wu had no choice but to admit this was all real.
“So I’m really screwed this time. This is the 100th floor of a dungeon. I don’t have a map. How the hell am I supposed to get out of this godforsaken hole? Even if escaping is possible, food alone is going to decide whether I survive.”
“If I can’t pull up the interface, that means the system isn’t working. If the system isn’t working, then I’m basically just an ordinary person now. All this gear on me, and I can’t even use it.”
“What good are three world-class items if I’m still gonna die in some strange world?”
“I haven’t even seen Feifei in real life. I’m still a single dog, I’ve never even been in a relationship. This sucks!”
“Why did I insist on sticking it out? I should’ve logged off with the others. Then I wouldn’t be stuck like this.”
“If someone gave me food right now, that’d be great. I’m starving…”
Sitting on the Demon King’s throne, Yue Wu stared at the staff and holy tome floating beside him. Then he looked down at his own fingers, at the ten rings, each with a different design. In the end he let out a long sigh, his whole posture collapsing, his spirit visibly deflating.
But just as he was sinking into despair, the gold ring on the index finger of his left hand flashed with a streak of golden light. A rough loaf of bread appeared out of thin air in his hand.
The miracle made Yue Wu’s eyes go wide. He never imagined something like this could trigger now.
“Thank you, heavens, for your mercy. You’re basically my second parents!”
He grabbed the bread and took a huge bite. On this earth—or whatever this was—nothing mattered more than food. Fill your stomach first. Then think about the future.
After finishing the bread, Yue Wu sat back on the throne and carefully studied the ring that had just performed the miracle.
“If I remember right, this Artifact-class piece is King’s Treasury.”
The moment Yue Wu confirmed the name of the golden ring, another miracle occurred.
