Why are you still grappling with the matter of whether to care for him or not?
From Helena's stance, Landon knew there was no reasoning with her.
He sighed weakly, giving up on persuading Helena.
Helena's attitude was peculiar, leaving Landon scratching his head, attributing it to her being a workaholic.
Workaholics, are the ones who find pleasure in work, and asking them to do less feels like a threat to their lives.
He remembered in the game, Helena became depressed because of overwork. The male protagonist, by bringing Helena out for relaxation, taught her about freedom and happiness and won her over.
Presumably, Helena treated looking after her younger brother as a duty, depriving her of something to worry about made her feel ill at ease, and she seemingly needed to find something to fuss about.
Unwilling to compromise, Landon decided to let time adjust Helena's habits.
"I don't need managing, just as I've never involved myself in your affairs. I hope you can respect me a bit more."
"How can those be the same?"
Landon was puzzled. "Where's the difference?"
Helena replied matter-of-factly, "I promised Mother to look after you."
"Ah, is that so? Mother's death anniversary is around the corner. I'll let her know that I've grown up and can take care of myself. So she doesn't have to worry about troubling you anymore. Does this work for you now?"
"But..."
Helena wanted to say something more.
Rubbing his temples, Landon cuts her short: "I've got work to do, please don't disturb me anymore. I'll be going to school tomorrow."
Having said this, Landon didn't give Helena any time to react, he quickly exited and retreated to his study.
Sigh, even though the appearance of the male progonist in the game meant the beginning of the game's plot, where death threats lurk, given Helena's situation, Landon was actually hopeful for the arrival of the game's male lead.
Without the game's male lead, Landon's heart was kept hanging, which was pretty exhausting.
Hurry up! Follow Helena's route, divert her attention! Get her out to have fun!
He's fine with her going to school as well. Without Helena at school, it provides him with peace and does not interfere with his work. That's why he agreed to it so readily.
However, he seemed to have forgotten something.
What was it that he forgot?
The next day, upon reaching school and seeing Cain greeting him at the school entrance, did Landon realized what he had neglected.
—He completely forgot about Cain, his schoolmate!
He couldn't help it. He had been really busy of late. Why entertain a thought about Cain, a person who’s always making his life miserable?
Even the best of moods wouldn’t deserve to be ruined like this.
"Young Master!" Cain greeted Landon with a beaming smile, "No, I should be addressing you as Your Excellency Duke... I didn't expect you to return to school early. How is your health?"
Landon decided to take an opportunity to fire Cain later. But for now, he just nodded perfunctorily and headed straight to the classroom.
This is not an ordinary school. Even if he's a Duke, if he’s frequently late, the teachers wouldn't let him off easily, and it might affect the end of term evaluations.
The August Empire Magic School, founded a century earlier by the royal family, serves as a place for people with Wizarding abilities all over to receive systematic training.
Magic aside from Blood Inherit Magic, which relies heavily on individual comprehension, often needs instruction, otherwise it may lead to detours.
In the past, the practice and teachings of magic were mostly monopolized by the nobility. Regardless of their abilities, they cherished what little they had and were incredibly stingy, making the cultivation of wizards a very slow process. It had resulted in severe manpower shortage during the invasion by the Magic Race, exposing the drawbacks of this clan's traditional mentor-apprentice mode.
To prepare for future wars, the royal family persuaded the nobles to contribute some resources. The Emperor then himself served as a teacher at the school, which was successfully launched.
With time, the school's rules, regulations and curriculum had become more refined, nurturing batch after batch of wizards. The offerings, as well as the differences in teaching various grades, had also become more specific. For instance, the first year is mainly theoretical courses, the second year is theory intermingling with practice, with practical exams at the end of the semester. The third year begins with missions in external fields, sweeping monsters, investigating mysterious rumors in certain regions. The difficulties of missions begin to increase in the fourth year, but the tutors to choose from have become more excelling and famous...
Graduation does not require to complete a defined number of years. As talents and levels vary, students are given the option to graduate at any age-level. After all, there is no necessity for someone who can merely kindle a fire to roast meat to risk battling monsters. They can fully return home to run a restaurant and sustain themselves.
Without cease, the school has been nurturing wizards with varying levels. Were it not for the limited number of truly qualified individuals, the status of the August Empire's wizards would almost be on par with the uni students from Landon's previous nation.
For example, freshmen correspond to vocational school students, sophomores to junior college students, juniors to undergraduates, seniors to students from the 985211 program, fifth-grade students to postgraduates from key schools...
As nearly all the useful wizards for the nation are third graders or above, lower grades aren't greatly valued, with the teachers being rather ordinary, mostly adhering strictly to textbooks, and even students take turns teaching.
Landon is currently a sophomore, with the larger part still being theoretical courses, occasionally spiced with practicum-based courses. Apart from combat-oriented courses, there are those like astrology, which carry little danger.
Happily, today's first course is on Astrology. The class is held on the rooftop of Building 3, where there's a permanent enchantment, serving as a filter on the rooftop, allowing for clear sighting of the stars even during the day.
When Landon arrived, there was still some time before class. The rooftop already had a few early arrivals who upon Landon's entrance displayed no surprise, instead, many looked as if they hadn't fully woken up, entirely unaffected by gossips.
Keenly, Caine pulled out a chair for Landon, who not keen on searching for a seat further back, straightforwardly seated himself.
Soon enough, nearly all the students had arrived, and yet the teacher hadn't.
By then, Landon was already suspecting something was amiss.
The teacher of the Astrology class, an archetypal bookworm, would usually arrive in advance, sitting up front while burying his nose in a book. How come he hadn't arrived yet?
Landon’s suspicions were shortly resolved.
The rooftop door was pushed open. At this time, it could be no one but the teacher of the Astrology class.
Unexpectedly, the one at the door was someone Landon hadn't anticipated.
Standing there was a delicately pretty girl with pinkish hair, cradling a box, trying to push the door open with her frail shoulders and long legs.
She was wearing a mini skirt, revealing her elegant long legs; the coarse surface of the door was brushing against her pale, dainty knees, causing her to frown slightly, her painted lips lightly moving, mumbling something inaudible.
Almost sensing something, her eyes roved around, looking up to meet Landon, seated in the first row. That moment, their eyes met, time seemed to come to a standstill.
Landon was astounded.
Since when did Flora become the teacher of the Astrology class?!
