Chapter Eleven: It's All Your Fault!
update icon Updated at 2023/7/1 0:10:12

Late at night by the roadside, a group of people circled around Bai Weiran and Qing Ning, who was hiding behind him out of shame, craning their necks curiously.

"Do we have a new member today?"

"Yes, I appreciate everyone's help." Bai Weiran responded politely, lifting the brim of his safety helmet, which made the skinny and dark-skinned group of uncles and aunts in front of him burst into laughter.

"Young man, you don't seem like someone who needs to take on a cleaning job. Why do this?"

Bai Weiran laughed gently and responded calmly.

"Just because I don't look like it doesn't mean I don't need it. Actually, I'm poor, and I used to be irresponsible with my spending. Even though I didn't have the purchasing power, I tried to show off wealth and spent too much on credit card advances. Now that I've woken up to reality and realized how unreliable I was, I have to work to pay off my debts. "

An uncle sighed, patting his shoulder.

"That's how young people are nowadays. But that's okay. You've caught onto this early. Start earning money now, and you'll eventually have it. Who hasn't made mistakes in their youth?"

A curious aunt looked towards Qing Ning.

"But why are you bringing a girl..."

Before the word "girlfriend" could be said, Bai Weiran quickly cut her off.

"Sister."

He pulled the reluctant Qing Ning to his side.

"This is my sister. She's shy and doesn't like being around people, but she's very considerate. She's willing to help me pay off the debt. She insisted on coming with me to clean at night, saying my matters were her matters too, and we, as siblings, should get through this together... there's nothing I could do."

Wearing a mask, Qing Ning looks shocked at Bai Weiran.

How shameless you are.

Who wants to clean at night? She, a daughter of the wealthy Qin family, can spend millions per second -

The group of uncles and aunts were already singing their praises.

"Such a good sister. Young guy, you shouldn't make the same mistakes in the future. You should work hard for this kind of sister."

"The girl has a good heart. It's rare to see a family getting along well like this."

"It's good to accompany your brother, but in the future, you should also urge your brother not to spend money recklessly!"

The anger caused Qing Ning's hands to be ice cold.

Wearing a mask and gloves, her body covered tightly in her work suit, she couldn't see anything clearly, so she could only glare at Bai Weiran to protest. Due to her upbringing as a noble young lady, she couldn't really scold Bai Weiran on the street in front of everyone in the middle of the night.

Had they been in a room, she definitely wouldn't have held back!

Bai Weiran, like a kind older brother, gently patted the yellow safety helmet on her head.

"Everyone, don't embarrass her. She's very shy. Look at her, she doesn't know what to do. I've already learnt my lesson, and she won't live a hard life with me anymore."

Everyone was touched, and they praised the siblings for their respective qualities.

Qing Ning wanted to bite Bai Weiran.

Bai Weiran just laughed contentedly.

The leader, a bald-headed uncle, gave out simple instructions and distributed everyone's work areas. Of course, Qing Ning and Bai Weiran were assigned to the same area.

In the real world, cleaning staff are not well-respected, so all cleaning work is done at night.

Bai Weiran took on this part-time job as a subcontractor for city cleaning, mainly responsible for cleaning parks and public car parks.

Bai Weiran thought to himself, actually, his reality was the same, but everyone liked to pretend - people would rush past cleaning staff who are working hard under the blazing sun to keep the park or city clean, treating them as if they were invisible.

When did they ever get noticed?

Only when they had to thank the unsung heroes of the city, would there suddenly be an interview with a lean and dark-skinned old man or old woman in front of the camera, reading some clearly prepared lines.

The people watching the video were moved to tears and clapped their hands.

But once the video ended, everyone would act as if they couldn't see the people working under the scorching sun again.

I cannot decide whether this feigned respect or blatant disdain is more noble. Pushing a handcart filled with necessary tools and large garbage bags, Bai Weiran hummed to himself. Qing Ning was lagging behind him with four or five steps. She pretended to be downtrodden but was constantly scanning their surroundings. Trying to determine their current location from the nearby environment, she felt despondent when she realized she couldn't identify the place since she was always driven around.

Should she run?

She contemplated.

So far, this 'The mask' guy had only made her read, memorize, denied her food choices, and forced her to wear hideously ugly clothes. Despite the odd sense of security she felt with him, he was still a kidnapper. Yet, he possessed strange superpowers. He could fly, halt moving objects, manipulate matter, or appear anywhere at any time.

Could she escape from him?

Could she at least try?

She gazed at the dense grove of trees on her left, which could serve a good cover. She stealthily retreated two steps further and, ensuring that she was over ten steps away from Bai Weiran, she turned around and sprinted. Unfortunately, akin to the clichéd scenes of comedic movies, she smashed into an invisible wall, mere steps into her escape.

She let out a cry of pain, bending over with her hands clutching her nose. Yet, Bai Weiran had already materialized directly ahead of her escape path, snapping a photograph at the exact moment Qing Ning had run into the invisible wall, managing to capture her agonized expression. He examined the photo, tutted, and remarked, "Even a beautiful young Miss cannot avoid such embarrassingly mishaps." Finding it too hilarious, he decided to keep the photo.

Finally, concern washed over him as he looked at Qing Ning, who hadn't moved since the incident. "What's wrong?" he asked. The slender back of the girl twitched, hands covering her face. Realizing that she must be saddened by her futile escape attempt, Bai Weiran comforted her gently, "It's not embarrassing to fail to escape, after all, I'm not an ordinary person."

He had foreseen Qing Ning's escape attempt and set up an invisible barrier around her, leaving only the path towards him clear. Nonetheless, Qing Ning had yet to lift her head, and something began to seem wrong. He squatted down to see her tightly holding her mask, tears of frustration, shame, and downfall in her eyes. Suddenly, it dawned on him.

Suppressing his laughter, he managed to maintain a serious expression, "It’s okay, let me take a look, it won’t get better if you keep it covered this way." Under his persuasion, Qing Ning loosened her grip, revealing a patch of redness on her mask. She had banged herself so hard that her nose was bleeding. The poor, frail Miss. What has become of her, no longer commanding awe, but a figure of comedy?

Bai Weiran couldn’t help laughing. Enraged by his laughter, Qing Ning blamed him for her current state. Ignoring the fact that he was a kidnapper with super powers, she uncovered her face and hit him with all her might, "It's all your fault, you rotten kidnapper! You bully!" She hit him like rain, but it was only ticklish to Bai Weiran, who had gone through physical enhancements.

He caught her soft wrist in one hand and shook his head, “... Okay okay, indeed it's all my fault."
