Chapter 2 Centipede in the Snow
update icon Updated at 2025/7/4 19:10:12

As they continued their journey, the temperature continued to drop. Fortunately, Sofia had prepared thermal control clothing, which was essential for the group to combat the extreme cold. Sofia held a small device in her hand, which had a modern technological feel. The device was circular in shape, with a plastic backplate and a display panel on the front.

Sofia used this device to determine the location of the Largrange Stone. After accidentally discovering the Largrange Stone, she realized its power and created this instrument using the stone as a material. However, even with the best technology, it was still not possible to precisely detect the location of the Largrange Stone. At most, they could only get a rough idea of its whereabouts, which was already sufficient.

The group continued to travel on the icy surface, which consumed their energy much faster than before. Although the energy consumption was not significant, it would be disadvantageous in case of any unexpected situations. Therefore, they remained alert to their surroundings, fearing sudden attacks from monsters.

Fortunately, their worries were unfounded. After walking for half a day, they stepped onto the snowy continent without any issues. The surrounding temperature had dropped to a level that would instantly freeze an ordinary person to death. Even with the thermal equipment prepared by Sofia, they had to use a little magic to keep warm. This made their progress more challenging.

"We can take a break here. We haven't detected any suspicious signs in the area, so it should be safe."

The group set up camp and began eating their prepared food. Once they set foot on the continent, the frigid wind blew across their faces constantly. Ordinary people would never survive in such a harsh environment, even for just ten minutes. Only mages who were skilled in fire and ice magic could withstand these conditions. Fire mages could maintain a suitable body temperature, even in high heat, while ice mages inherently had a high tolerance for low temperatures.

For Green, however, temperature posed no constraint. He could even strip off his clothes and sleep here for a day and night without any issues, although he had no intention of doing so. During the rest, Green found a spot and sat down, dozing off.

Throughout their break, the intense cold wind continued to blow, accompanied by swirling snow. It wasn't until the group finished their rest inside the camp that Green woke up from his nap and discovered that his body was partially covered in snow. While he wasn't completely buried, snow covered about half of his body. Of course, this was because he was sitting cross-legged.

The team resumed their journey. Due to the heavy snowfall and dropping temperatures, the fire mages in the group released several heat-filled fireballs that floated around the team, providing much-needed warmth.

"It's unexpectedly cold here. No wonder there's so little information about this continent."

"Who would bother collecting information in such a desolate place? If it weren't for Sofia's invitation, I would have never set foot here."

"You're right."

The group complained for a while before continuing their journey. They left footprints in the snow, which were quickly covered by fresh snowfall. They lost track of time as they trudged through the ice and snow. Gradually, the heavy snow lessened, revealing a vast white world to the group.

Looking around, it was impossible to distinguish between sky and ground, creating a surreal atmosphere.

"Hey, the scenery here isn't too bad!"

"You won't feel the same when the sun comes out."

"Why is that?"

Sofia didn't appreciate the unique landscape but instead adjusted her device. The display showed a simple crosshair with a small dot representing the device's location at its center. Nearby, there was a slightly larger dot representing the Largrange Stone. While the precision wasn't high, it was sufficient.

Sophia observed the surrounding routes and just finished giving instructions to the team on the next route to take when she suddenly felt something behind her. She turned around and discovered a giant centipede, its body half exposed, had emerged from the ground.

"Hiss--"

The giant centipede emitted a chilling sound from its mouth, causing people to shudder inexplicably.

This giant centipede was about five to six meters long, silver-gray in color, with some faint white patterns on its body.

To be honest, if its body was just lying in the snow, it would be difficult to spot it at first glance. But now, it stood upright, making everyone immediately notice its presence.

"This guy...is a frozen centipede! I've seen it in related books. It's said that this kind of monster only lives in extremely cold areas. There is very little information about it. Everyone must be careful!"

"Understood!"

The group quickly stepped back and instinctively formed a formation. Several strong warriors stood in the front, while the fire mages in the back started drawing magic circles, preparing to launch a deadly attack on the frozen centipede.

The frozen centipede sensed the danger from the group's movements and let out another hiss, then its body writhed in the snow like a snake and swiftly charged towards the group.

At the same time, the patterns on its body gradually protruded and eventually turned into spike-like shapes, which then instantly shot out like bullets.

But just as it was about to hit, a suddenly appearing ice wall blocked its attack.

Suddenly, the frozen centipede noticed that the ice wall was turning slightly red. Confused, a huge fireball broke through the ice wall and flew towards it at high speed.

Caught off guard, the frozen centipede was hit by the massive fireball, and the resulting explosion raised the temperature in the vicinity and caused the nearby accumulated snow to melt.

"Did it work?"

The view was obscured by the flames, so no one could see what was happening in front. However, when the flames disappeared, everyone was surprised to find that the frozen centipede was still standing intact in its original position.

Obviously, the attack just now was not enough to defeat the frozen centipede.

Instead, it had only angered it.

"Hiss--!"

The frozen centipede swung its body at a speed several times faster than before and charged towards the group. Its speed was so fast that it created afterimages. The defense ice wall hadn't even fully formed, and the frozen centipede made close contact with the group.

"Uh-oh!"

Just as the group was preparing to resist the frozen centipede's attack, a small beam of light suddenly shot out from behind them, directly piercing through the frozen centipede's suspended body.

In an instant, the entire frozen centipede was suspended in mid-air, showing no signs of life.

Not until someone approached to observe did they realize that the frozen centipede had already lost its life force. Its body was as cold as ice, and the wound pierced by the beam of light had already frozen.

"It seems that it was frozen to death in an instant..."

Until someone said this, the group remembered the sudden appearance of the beam of light and quickly turned their heads to look behind them, only to find that Green was standing there with an indifferent look on his face.

"What's happening?"

"Uh...did Green kill that monster?"

"Yeah, it was me. Is there a problem?"

Seeing Green's casual expression, the group subconsciously swallowed their throats. They truly realized that there was a terrifyingly powerful Green in their team.

At the same time, because of being saved by Green, they had even more admiration for him from the bottom of their hearts.

Ignoring the frozen centipede frozen from the inside out, the group bypassed it and continued forward. But with this unexpected incident, everyone became more vigilant about their surroundings.

Meanwhile, Green also noticed something unusual. This centipede monster gave Green a sense of something being off.

It suddenly appeared within Green's perception range, but it didn't just materialize out of thin air. It moved from a distance to here at an extremely fast speed, as if something was chasing it or it was avoiding some kind of presence.

It didn't attack when it first saw the group, but instead waited until they seemed about to attack it before launching its own attack, although its speed was slower than before.

It was as if someone who suddenly exploded in a crisis would immediately feel fatigued and weak afterward.

Moreover, higher-level monsters had simple consciousness, so Green was curious if this monster had encountered something terrifying before.

Without dwelling too much on it, Green remained at the back of the group as before. However, compared to before, everyone would occasionally glance at Green with a look of admiration in their eyes. This was the first time that Green had taken action in front of them on this journey.

It must be said that Green's strength far exceeded their imagination. They could only see the residual image left behind by the centipede's rapid movement, and then a beam of light flashed before their eyes, freezing the centipede in mid-air.

This also revealed that the temperature here was truly terrifyingly cold. Everyone made the smallest movements possible to maintain their speed while conserving their own energy, especially when they needed to use magic to keep warm. Saving energy was crucial.

However, Green not only declined Sophia's warm clothing but also walked naturally as if nothing was wrong, wearing his usual clothes. His posture was so natural that no one could tell he was in such an environment.

The way Green effortlessly killed the centipede monster earlier was also like he was doing something mundane, without a hint of excitement in his demeanor.

Even though Green was invited later on, everyone gradually started to believe that Green was the most important factor for the success of this mission. Perhaps the help Green could provide them would far exceed their initial expectations.
