Chapter 56 Underground Passage
update icon Updated at 2026/4/29 17:00:02

The biggest difference between the underground passageways of the demon race and humans is... there are no lights in the demon passageway.

That's right, not a single light. According to Greed, demons either rely on their night vision or bring their own light, so when constructing these underground passageways, they never consider installing lights.

The passageway we are currently traversing also has its own distinctions from the previous ones. The one we are using now is an expanded sewer system built from the original underground passageways.

Of course, only the urban areas have sewers. As we walked along the passageway towards the enemy's camp, the drainage part directly flowed into a large hole after a while, and we turned to another direction.

"Greed, what kind of underground passageway was this before?"

"Well... the original purpose is unknown, but according to records, this area had many tombs, escape routes, private storages, all overlapping to form a vast underground network."

"Tombs? Isn't a part of the demon race transformed from human undead?"

"Even us native demons have physical bodies, so naturally, we need tombs too."

"Fair enough."

"It feels quite similar to the human world."

Hei Luoli remarked.

"Even in the Eastern Continent, there are escape tunnels everywhere, some spanning several kilometers."

"That does sound terrifying..."

I wiped my sweat and said.

Aren't you afraid that the ground might collapse with all this digging underground?

"In any case, let's keep moving. Just out of curiosity, will there be any monsters in this passageway?"

I quickly asked as she pushed open a door further down the passageway.

"Well... it depends."

She shrugged.

"After all, we don't use these passageways often."

"True, but you seem very familiar with this passageway."

"Well..."

Greed shrugged.

"Because occasionally, you can find valuable things down here, so when I have nothing to do, I come here to play."

"..."

We all felt a bit embarrassed. Someone actually came to this place for such a reason, and I silently glanced at Aliyah.

"Cough, well, indeed, it's quite attractive. I might come explore this place another day."

"Sure thing."

As we continued forward, the surrounding passageways deteriorated further.

If we say the city's underground passageways are relatively well-maintained, then the segment we just walked through was akin to a dilapidated building we often see.

And now...

Isn't this resembling a collapsing mine?

There are hardly any intact tiles on the floor, and some sections have already caved in. The areas without bricks on the walls are filled with black soil that has flowed out, blocking half of the passage.

At this point, I summoned the Stone Totem out of friendship to support the passage for us to cross.

None of us wanted any scenes of the passage collapsing; it would be troublesome to deal with such an event.

However, even with our precautions, things took an unexpectedly troublesome turn. Besides the parts obstructed due to collapse, when we reached the end of this passage, a bigger problem confronted us.

Yes, just like in most plots, the passageway ahead was sealed off by rocks, layered thickly as if intentionally blocked.

"Probably some demon beasts accidentally damaged the floor, causing the collapse, right? When I came last time, this place wasn't like this."

"That's really troublesome."

I looked around the entire passage and there were no other passages nearby.

"What should we do then? Is there another alternate route?"

"Well... there must be one. After all, the underground passageways are interconnected, so we should be able to find a way around." Greed looked at us and said.

"The problem is, do you have a map of the underground passageways? It would be difficult for us to find our way without a map, right?"

"Well, I usually just follow the routes I've taken before and explore onwards, so I stick to the paths I know," he replied.

"That's really..."

Before I could finish, there was a loud bang.

I turned my head and saw that Taishi Xi had already drilled a hole in the wall.

"Ah! What are you doing!"

"Hmm? I knocked on this side of the wall and it seemed hollow, so I opened it."

"This..."

I looked around, and there didn't seem to be any signs of collapse, which relieved me.

"Alright, let's consider this as exploration. Taishi Xi, where does the adjacent passage lead to?"

"Well..."

He peeked his head and looked at the adjacent passage.

"It seems to lead to another passage in the same direction, and it looks quite clean."

"Clean?"

Greed said in surprise, then ran over.

"Oh oh oh, this passage... It's so intact, I can't believe it!"

"What does that imply?"

"It suggests that we may have come across a passage in another tomb, or it could be an unused escape route. Whichever it is, it's very advantageous for us."

"Great, I smell the scent of treasure."

Aliyah nodded.

"Hey hey hey, aren't we here for a covert operation..."

I chuckled.

"Well..."

Both Greed and Aliyah said together.

"It's on the way."

The two of you have the potential to be master thieves.
