After walking for about ten minutes, we arrived at a street where even the streetlights were broken. There were no lights in the houses, only candlelight. I couldn't tell if it was because they couldn't afford magical lights or for some other reason. Fran led me directly to the doorstep of a seemingly dilapidated mansion. The yard of the mansion was filled with weeds, and not a single window in the entire building was intact, despite the obvious signs of its former grandeur. It was clear that something had happened to the original owners of this house, causing their family fortune to decline or leading them to abandon the mansion.
"It seems you've figured something out," Fran said as she pushed open the door.
"Yes, what happened to this family?" I asked.
"This house... well, in simple terms, it's haunted. But even the representatives from the church couldn't solve it. Then I discovered this place and found the root of the problem, so I bought it and turned it into my personal laboratory. Well, would you believe this house only cost 10 gold coins?"
"It's strange that they still demand payment from those who want to escape nightmares," I commented.
Upon hearing this, Fran turned curiously to look at me. "You're quite different, aren't you? I mean, it seems like you're too calm."
"Well, there's nothing to be surprised about, is there?"
"Oh, interesting." With that, Fran went inside.
"I wonder what you'd think if you knew that there's a way to bring back some low-level undead spirits here," she said, revealing once again that she was practicing her old profession as a necromancer.
Well, Yabber was here after all, so was she afraid of being discovered?
Shaking my head, making sure there was no one else around, I followed her inside.
Sure enough, the living room had a haunted feeling to it, covered in cobwebs and dust. Besides the footprints on the floor, indicating someone had been here, there were no other hints.
"This way." Fran gestured towards the light behind the staircase.
Sighing, I walked over. "I have to say, is it really a good idea to bring a stranger into your lair?"
"Well... worst-case scenario, I'll turn you into my puppet. It's not a big deal," Fran replied.
"What makes you so confident that you could defeat me..."
"Is that so? Should we try first before continuing?" I interrupted.
"Where do you get the confidence to speak this way to someone you've only known for a few hours?" she retorted.
"Because if you're acquainted with Oyado and the others, it means you must be similar to them. So there's nothing to be afraid of, right?"
I had no reply to that!
With that thought, I walked towards her.
"Alright then, let me see what you want me to test," I said.
Following Fran down the stairs leading to the basement, we discovered a hidden gem. The entire basement had been renovated, with the walls even repainted white. Aside from the gruesome magical tools and the nauseating odor of the magical reagents emitting strange smoke, there didn't seem to be any other issues. However, what caught my attention was a container in the left corner of the wall. The entire container resembled one of those containers in a biohazard scenario where monsters were kept.
But now, instead of being a licker or a tyrant, it is a translucent soul.
"Hey hey hey... you wouldn't..."
I pointed to that translucent soul and asked.
"Do you mean to say that I should communicate with it?"
"Ah, well, I didn't expect you to be so smart."
Fran looked at me with an expression of great admiration.
"This soul seems to carry very important information. It escaped from the Abyss, yes, it escaped. It seems that something abnormal happened in the Abyss, causing some necromancer's summoning spells to fail, and this guy came to the human world through a crack in this house, so I let him stay as my guest."
"A crack? Is it dangerous?"
"No, it seems that only some low-level undead can pass through that crack, so there's no problem."
"That's good."
This reminds me of the Abyss entrance below the altar of the Ais Empire. That's a place that can only be sealed by ice, and opening a passage would definitely turn the Ais Empire into a dead city.
"So you intend for me to communicate with that ghost? Aren't you a necromancer? Can't you communicate with the undead?"
"Well, we know the spells to command them, but when it comes to communication, unless you're a necromancer who has already become a lich, forget about it."
Even though Fran didn't directly tell me she was a necromancer, I've seen enough to know, isn't it obvious?
"Is that so?"
I walked up to the undead.
"It seems that I have to touch it in order to communicate with it. Is there a method?"
"Or maybe I can communicate with any undead I touch?"
“I'm not sure about that, but that's how it feels to me."
I can't say that I read the skill description.
"That's easy."
Fran waved her hand, and an undead appeared right next to her.
"Go ahead."
"That's really convenient."
I walked over and placed my hand on the undead.
Learned skill: Undead Whisper
It turns out this is still a skill... come to think of it, the elven language from before also became a skill. It seems that languages learned through this method will indeed become skills.
"By the way, that undead you summoned, does it not know what happened in the Abyss?"
"It... It's an undead trapped in my Undead Domain, not directly summoned from the Abyss, since summoning from the Abyss is currently impossible."
Fran explained like this.
I gave a bitter smile and turned to the undead in the jar.
Tapping on the Undead Whisper skill, I walked up to the undead.
"Hey, undead, what happened in the Abyss that made you escape to the human world?"
"Huh?"
The undead was slightly surprised and looked at me carefully.
"Do you actually understand the language of the undead?"
"Well, you could say so."
"Let me out! Let me out and I'll tell you!"
"First tell me what happened, and then I'll let you out."
"How do I know if you'll keep your word?"
"Because if not, I can simply annihilate your soul and ask another undead. And you have no choice, do you?"
"Damn it."
The undead trembled for a moment and then looked at me.
"Well, let me tell you, in the Abyss, there is a forbidden race that has awakened. There is a descendant of an Undead Holy Angel who came from an unknown origin and found those Undead Holy Angels hidden deep in the Abyss. He freed them and formed a new organization, uniting many other races from the Abyss, challenging the authority of the Demon King, and officially declaring war on him."
"..."
I pressed my temple, taking a moment to collect myself, and continued.
"What is the name of that Undead Holy Angel?"
"Fir, he goes by the name Fir Lin."
