Chapter 42: Infiltration
update icon Updated at 2025/10/4 3:10:12

"Oyado, have you confirmed the number of people?"

Crouched on the rooftop of the hotel, my figure blended seamlessly into the darkness, wrapped in a black cloak.

It's not my habit to be out in the cool breeze of the midnight, and I'm not like A-san, who enjoys looking down from high places. But the only entrance we could break through was on the roof.

Surveying the hotel below, I could see a total of fourteen people. However, to confirm if anyone was using invisibility skills, I sent Oyado to check.

Oyado's figure wasn't near me, but after I asked, her figure slowly appeared from the air.

"Big brother~ No problem. Just as big brother said, there are only fourteen people responsible for guarding this hotel."

"The number seems a bit low... but it makes sense. If there were too many people in an almost abandoned hotel like this, wouldn't it expose the hiding place of the goods?"

That's right, the location of this hotel is completely different from the auction venue. It is a nearly bankrupt hotel deep in a residential area.

Without intelligence, it would be difficult to find such a place.

"Now that we've figured it out, let's go in quickly. If we don't make money this time, I won't let you off easily, you know. I've been secretly sharing guild information with you!"

That's right, the one talking is our source of intelligence, Yugiri Yuune.

As an exchange for intelligence, she gets to choose the spoils we snatch later.

I don't think this girl would go for something like a magic book, right?

So, our group consists of me, Aliyah, Oyado, and Yugiri, responsible for stealing. The others who don't have infiltration skills are divided into three groups. Two groups are strolling outside, while one group is on standby inside the hotel.

Of course, the standby group consists of Kuroto and Junpai... Well, they're a combination of two people who aren't good at speaking, so they can practice playing cards to pass the time.

The rest of us are responsible for shopping, eating supper, and wandering around, just in case someone is monitoring us without us noticing.

Even though all of us have amazing skills, there are always better ones out there. If the other side has better surveillance techniques than us, it could be troublesome.

So after dividing into four groups, the four of us went directly to the old hotel where the goods were hidden.

However, although this hotel is run-down, according to the information, it used to do good business three hundred years ago. There is even a basement-like place resembling a vault, so we assume the goods are there.

But...

These bastards have randomly placed various traps in every room on every floor. The risk of entering from any room is higher than entering from the rooftop. There's no choice, we have to enter from here.

The design of this route is giving me the feeling that I'm in a stealth game.

And in order to ensure that tomorrow's auction will not be stopped, all we have to do is quietly sneak in, steal a portion, and then escape.

The required items for the mission are not many, and I only want various skill books, so it's a simple task.

As for what the others want to steal, that's not something I have to worry about.

Plus, the worst-case scenario is that we are discovered, and we have to make these fourteen people meet our standards of death or unconsciousness. After that, we won't care about what happens next.

That's why we are all wearing completely different clothes from before, and with the addition of disguises, unless their discernment ability is maxed out, ordinary people will not be able to recognize us.

If there were save and load options, I wouldn't have to worry about being discovered, but unfortunately...

Pop.

The door to the rooftop was finally opened by Aliyah. She took a deep breath and slowly removed the lock.

"No traps here, let's go," she said.

Aliyah pointed to her glasses that she wore and then walked in first.

The glasses she wore were similar to my Reality Goggles, but they were specifically designed to detect trap devices and amplify observation.

You might say that I could also enter through the window next to it with my Reality Goggles, but with my 【Famous Detective】 skill combined with the Reality Goggles,

the alarm would sound incessantly as soon as I got close to that window. How can I focus on infiltrating then?

Aliyah slowly climbed into the attic and looked down through the cracks in the floor.

"There are several traps placed in the passage below, no wonder there is only one guard at the entrance on this floor. It's impossible to pass through with this density..."

"There will be a way," I said.

I also walked over quietly and looked around. Then I looked back at the entrance where we came in.

"We'll confirm the path first. Once it's okay, we'll notify you, and you guys can stay here and watch if anyone comes to check."

"Okay."

Shen Luo and Oyado nodded.

Originally, this kind of mission would have been more convenient for Oyado, who only had the killing skill. However, because she couldn't inform us quickly, we had to let Shen Luo stay with her.

"Anyway, let's create a narrow passage for the time being."

I said, then a thread of blue cold air slowly penetrated the floor, bypassing those magic traps, and entwining around those purely physical traps.

Slowly, a layer of faint frost appeared on the surface of those traps. Not only on the outside, but even all the mechanisms inside those traps were frozen solid.

"This way, we have a small passage for now."

Because the traps below were too dense, we could only use this method to disarm some of them first.

"Hold on tight."

I held onto Aliya's waist and activated Shadow Stealth, passing through the floor and entering the shadow on the left aisle where the person responsible for monitoring was stationed.

That was a blind spot, and the person would not be able to see us from their line of sight.

And in the moment we landed, Aliyah threw a small object that turned into a pale white mist above the head of the person responsible for monitoring, falling onto them.

The person immediately reclined and fell asleep.

"Done, next are the magic traps."

Aliyah took out the absorption device from before and aimed it at the traps above the aisle, pressing the button.

The magical energy on the traps was slowly absorbed into the magical crystal of the device, turning into a pile of waste.

"Fourth floor is done, onto the next level."
